A data-centre UPS and a standby generator solve different parts of the same power problem. The UPS delivers instantaneous, conditioned power from batteries when utility power fails or sags. A generator supplies energy for the longer outage, but needs time to start and transfer equipment to connect it. The UPS bridges that interval and protects the load from unstable utility or generator output.
Reliable facilities therefore use a chain rather than a single device: utility service, an online UPS, batteries, automatic transfer equipment and a generator (or another long-duration source). The right arrangement depends on the load’s watts and volt-amperes, required ride-through time, maintenance strategy, fault domains, fuel logistics and applicable electrical codes.

How the three-layer backup chain works
1. The UPS handles the interruption immediately
An online double-conversion UPS rectifies incoming AC to DC and then continuously feeds the load through an inverter. Because the inverter is always supplying the equipment, the load does not wait for a relay to react when utility power disappears. The design also regulates voltage and frequency and isolates sensitive equipment from many grid disturbances. Schneider Electric calls this arrangement “the gold standard for servers, medical equipment, and any load where even a millisecond of instability is unacceptable.”
The UPS also provides surge protection, alarms, bypass paths and monitoring. In a data centre, the bypass is important for maintenance and for certain fault conditions, but it must be engineered so that transferring to bypass does not defeat the intended protection.

2. Batteries store the UPS energy
Batteries are the UPS’s energy reservoir. Smaller systems may place batteries inside the UPS frame; higher-power installations commonly use separate battery cabinets. Runtime is determined by usable battery capacity and the connected load, not by the UPS kVA label alone. As load rises, available minutes fall.
External battery modules can extend runtime only when they are compatible with the specific UPS model, charging system and control software. Mixing cabinets or cartridges that the UPS does not support can create charging, monitoring and safety problems. Battery chemistry, operating temperature, age, ventilation, monitoring and safe access all affect the usable reserve.
3. The generator sustains the facility
A generator is the long-duration source after an outage. Depending on the site, that source may be a diesel or natural-gas generator, a fuel cell or another permitted technology. Starting the machine, stabilising its output and changing the automatic transfer equipment from utility to generator all take time. The UPS carries the critical load during that sequence.

Endurance is a systems question rather than a nameplate claim. Fuel tank size, fuel quality, emissions permits, cooling, acoustic controls, maintenance condition and the ability to replenish fuel determine how long the generator can operate. A site with a large tank but no replenishment contract may have less practical endurance than a smaller installation with dependable deliveries.
UPS versus generator: what each one does
| Capability | UPS | Generator |
|---|---|---|
| Response to utility failure | Instantly supplies the load from the inverter and batteries. | Must start, reach stable output and connect through transfer equipment. |
| Typical duration | Short ride-through measured in minutes; runtime depends on battery capacity and load. | Hours or longer, limited by fuel, cooling, maintenance and replenishment. |
| Power quality | Online double-conversion units regulate and isolate the load from many utility disturbances. | Provides sustained energy, but output still has to be compatible with the UPS and facility distribution. |
| Maintenance focus | Battery health, inverter and rectifier condition, alarms, bypass and monitoring. | Engine, alternator, fuel, cooling, exhaust, controls and transfer switch. |
| Can it replace the other? | No. It cannot normally provide economical long-duration energy. | No. It cannot cover the interruption and stabilisation interval by itself. |
The practical design is coordinated operation: the UPS rides through the event, the generator becomes the sustained source, and the UPS returns to battery only if the generator or transfer path fails.
How long will a data-centre UPS last?
There is no universal runtime. Two identical UPS models can provide different minutes because their battery strings, temperature and loads differ. The manufacturer’s runtime curve or sizing software should be checked for the actual battery configuration and power factor.

Variables that change runtime
- Connected watts: More active servers, storage, cooling controls or network equipment consume the stored energy faster.
- Apparent power and power factor: The UPS must support both the real watt demand and the VA demand. A low or changing power factor can limit usable capacity even when watts appear acceptable.
- Battery condition: Age, temperature and a weak cell reduce the reserve compared with a new, properly conditioned string.
- Discharge and recharge limits: The UPS controls charging current and low-voltage cut-off; those settings affect how much of the nominal battery capacity is usable.
- Expansion cabinets: Additional cabinets can increase runtime only when the UPS is designed to detect, charge and protect them.
Most data-centre UPS deployments are intended to bridge generator transfer or to permit an orderly shutdown, not to keep a full facility running for an entire day. A longer ride-through objective requires a battery system sized for that purpose, with suitable floor loading, ventilation, protection and monitoring.
Define the ride-through objective first
Before selecting batteries, state which of these outcomes is required: remain online until a generator transfers; ride through short disturbances without starting a generator; or shut down equipment cleanly if no alternate source is available. The objective determines battery capacity, generator start assumptions, shutdown automation and the acceptable bypass arrangement.
Redundancy: N, N+1 and 2N
Schneider Electric identifies five principal UPS system design configurations for distributing utility power to critical loads. The configuration should be evaluated with the site’s distribution topology, not selected from a UPS catalogue in isolation. Vertiv’s commonly used capacity notation explains the basic redundancy choices:

| Pattern | Meaning | What it helps with | Trade-offs to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| N | Exactly the number of modules needed to carry the critical load; no spare module is available. | Lowest module count and usually the smallest capital footprint for the required capacity. | A module failure or maintenance event can reduce available capacity or require load shedding. |
| N+1 | One additional module beyond the capacity required by the critical load. | One module can fail or be serviced while the remaining modules carry the design load, subject to the distribution design. | It adds cost, space and losses, and it is not the same as having two independent power paths. |
| 2N | Two independent systems, each capable of carrying the full critical load. | Separates major fault domains and can permit maintenance on one complete path while the other remains in service. | Highest capital, floor-space and distribution complexity; both paths must be correctly operated and tested. |
Compare architectures against the availability target, maintainability during service, fault domains, footprint, capital cost, efficiency at expected load and compatibility with the generator and transfer scheme. Uptime Institute says its Tier Standard draws on more than 20 years of incident data across more than 1,000 data centres and treats onsite power generation as the only reliable power source in its Tier requirements. That is the institute’s standard position, not a guarantee: resilience still depends on design execution, operating discipline, testing, local utility conditions and fuel logistics.
How to size a UPS for a data centre
Final sizing and protection coordination require a qualified electrical engineer. A consumer UPS specification cannot be copied into a facility design. Use this sequence to define the engineering brief:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Measure the real load. Record watts and VA at the equipment input, including normal peaks, power-factor behaviour and inrush from supplies, motors or other non-linear loads.
- Add growth headroom. Allow for planned expansion and avoid operating at the edge of the UPS rating. Headroom must be stated as an engineering assumption rather than an arbitrary percentage.
- Set the ride-through target. Decide whether the UPS must bridge generator transfer, cover short disturbances or provide enough time for an orderly shutdown.
- Specify the battery system. Select chemistry, temperature range, replacement interval, monitoring method, fire and ventilation provisions, cabinet location and safe service access.
- Check electrical compatibility. Confirm three-phase voltage and frequency, bypass arrangements, short-circuit ratings, grounding and neutral requirements, and interaction between the UPS rectifier and generator.
- Map failures to the availability goal. Choose N, N+1 or 2N only after reviewing maintenance, module, battery, bypass, transfer-switch, generator and distribution failure scenarios.
Watts, VA and power factor
The UPS watt capacity must exceed the connected watt load, while the kVA rating must accommodate apparent power. A load with changing or poor power factor can consume more VA than its watt figure suggests. Ask the equipment manufacturer or measure the actual load rather than relying on a nominal nameplate.

Generator interaction
Large UPS rectifiers can present a changing input demand to a generator. The engineer should verify generator sizing, frequency and voltage stability, harmonic performance, ramping and any required input-current controls. Bypass capacity and short-circuit ratings must also match the upstream protective devices and the intended operating modes.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Facilities Manual, revised 15 December 2023, says backup-power systems should comply with NFPA 37, NFPA 70, NFPA 101, NFPA 110, NFPA 111 and IEEE 446. It also says generator acceptance testing for Level 1 systems should follow NFPA 110. These are U.S. federal-facility guidelines; the adopted local code, authority having jurisdiction and the system’s formal classification control an actual project.
| Figure | Qualification | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 72 hours | Minimum operating time at rated load without refuelling for the cited EPA backup-power design class. | Use only when that class and the applicable U.S. federal guidance govern the facility; it is not a universal generator requirement. |
| 60 seconds | Type 60 transfer time described for legally required standby systems in the cited EPA guidance. | It describes the transfer category, not a promise that every site or load will transfer in exactly that time. |
| 5 minutes | Minimum UPS protection specified in the cited EPA guidance for guaranteed-continuous loads. | It is a guidance value for the stated classification, not a substitute for a load-specific ride-through calculation. |
Commissioning should prove the complete path, not merely start the engine. Document normal and alternate source voltages, UPS load and bypass operation, battery alarms, transfer-switch sequences, generator loading, protection trips, monitoring points and recovery after a simulated failure.

Schneider Electric’s ASCO bulletin dated 13 September 2024 states that “Ensuring readiness for outages requires regular testing to verify backup power availability and performance.” No single interval applies to every jurisdiction, equipment class or operating risk, so the written maintenance plan should follow the adopted code, manufacturer instructions and the owner’s availability target.
Generator and transfer equipment
- Exercise the generator under the loading conditions required by the applicable code and maintenance program.
- Perform documented load testing rather than relying only on an unloaded start.
- Inspect engine fluids, coolant, batteries, belts, exhaust and ventilation.
- Sample and manage fuel for contamination, degradation and replenishment readiness.
- Operate the automatic transfer switch through its source-change and retransfer sequences.
- Record alarms, failed starts, abnormal voltage or frequency and corrective actions.
UPS and batteries
- Review UPS event logs, alarms, bypass status, inverter health and cooling.
- Measure battery impedance or conductance with equipment appropriate to the battery technology.
- Use thermal inspection to find loose connections, overloaded conductors or abnormal cells.
- Verify monitoring communications, alarm delivery, firmware status and time synchronisation.
- Inspect cabinets, clearances, ventilation, labels and safe access before service.
- Replace failed or aged strings using the UPS manufacturer’s compatible parts and control procedures.
Close the loop after a failure
A test that discovers a weak battery, failed transfer or fuel problem is only useful if the issue is tracked to resolution. Keep the test result, affected equipment, temporary risk, owner, corrective action and retest evidence in the maintenance record. This history helps distinguish a one-off alarm from a recurring design or operating fault.
Common failure modes and practical responses
| Observed condition | Likely area to investigate | Immediate engineering question |
|---|---|---|
| UPS transfers to battery during minor utility disturbances | Utility quality, input protection, rectifier settings or upstream switching. | Is the UPS correctly regulating the incoming source, and are repeated events consuming battery life? |
| Generator starts but the critical load remains on battery | Generator voltage or frequency stability, transfer-switch controls, interlocks or bypass logic. | Did the source become acceptable within the configured transfer criteria? |
| Runtime is shorter than the design curve | Higher actual watts, aged or hot batteries, a failed cell or incompatible expansion cabinet. | What do load measurements and impedance or conductance results show under the present conditions? |
| Maintenance requires taking the protected load offline | Insufficient bypass planning or a topology without a maintainable redundant path. | Can the load be transferred safely, or does the availability target require N+1 or 2N? |
| Generator endurance is less than expected | Fuel quality, tank volume, consumption at the actual load, cooling limits or replenishment arrangements. | What is the documented operating duration at rated and site-specific loads? |
A decision framework for a resilient design
- Classify the load. Separate guaranteed-continuous equipment from systems that can restart or shut down cleanly.
- Measure rather than estimate. Capture watts, VA, power factor, inrush and growth assumptions at the distribution level that the UPS will actually serve.
- Choose the ride-through event. Define the maximum utility-to-generator transfer and the response if the generator fails to start.
- Build the power path. Coordinate UPS, batteries, bypass, transfer equipment, generator, protection and monitoring as one system.
- Select redundancy from failure scenarios. N may meet a small or tolerant load; N+1 adds module-level maintainability; 2N separates complete paths when the business case justifies the cost and complexity.
- Commission and rehearse. Test source changes, battery operation, alarms, loading, fuel readiness and recovery, then retain evidence for every corrective action.
Putting it together
The essential distinction is simple: batteries and the UPS buy time; the generator buys duration. An online double-conversion UPS protects the load through the first instant and conditions power continuously, while a properly engineered generator and transfer system carry the facility through a prolonged outage. Capacity, redundancy and runtime are only credible when measured against the real load, compatible batteries, tested transfer paths, applicable standards and a maintenance program that proves the system will work when utility power does not.
