Data centers consumed an estimated 485 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity worldwide in 2025, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), which projects about 950 TWh in 2030. That near-doubling is a forecast, not a measured outcome. The practical issue is local as much as global: data centers cluster in a few regions, request very large power connections, and need electricity that remains stable during rapid changes in computing load.

How much electricity do data centers use?

The IEA’s 2026 update estimates that data centers used 485 TWh in 2025 and projects approximately 950 TWh in 2030. The 2030 figure is the IEA’s updated central projection and would be about 3% of global electricity demand. It is not an observation of facilities already operating, and it does not mean every planned data center will be built.

For comparison, the IEA’s 2025 analysis estimated 415 TWh in 2024, about 1.5% of world electricity consumption. The difference between 415 TWh and 485 TWh reflects different years and report updates; the figures should not be treated as two measurements of the same year.

The IEA’s 2026 update also projects that electricity use by AI-focused data centers will triple between 2025 and 2030. Accelerated servers, driven largely by AI adoption, account for almost half of the net increase in global data-center electricity consumption through 2030 in the IEA’s 2025 Base Case. Cooling and other facility infrastructure account for about one-fifth of that increase.

What TWh means

A terawatt-hour is an amount of energy consumed over a period. It combines power and time: a facility drawing 1 gigawatt continuously for one hour uses 1 gigawatt-hour, or 0.001 TWh. Annual data-center estimates therefore depend on how much equipment is installed, how heavily it is used, its efficiency, cooling demand, and other infrastructure loads.

How much power does an AI data center need?

There is no single number that applies to every AI data center. A site’s power capacity is its maximum or contracted rate of draw, normally stated in watts, megawatts (MW), or gigawatts (GW). Its electricity consumption is the energy it actually uses over time, stated in watt-hours such as MWh or TWh.

Measure What it describes Typical question it answers
Power capacity A rate or upper operating level, in W, MW or GW How much instantaneous supply and grid connection must be available?
Electricity consumption Energy accumulated over a period, in Wh, MWh or TWh How much electricity did the site use during a month or year?
Utilization How often equipment operates near its available capacity How does a stated capacity translate into annual use?

Comparing a facility’s MW capacity directly with an annual TWh total is therefore invalid unless the time period and utilization assumption are supplied. Two sites with the same connection capacity can consume very different amounts if one has fewer servers, lower utilization, more efficient hardware, or a different cooling design.

AI workloads add a reliability challenge beyond their total energy. The IEA’s 2026 update says AI training and model use can produce large, rapid power swings. A site must be designed for those changes as well as for its average load, because abrupt ramps can stress electrical equipment and the surrounding network.

Why is the global percentage misleading for local grids?

A few percent of world electricity demand can still be a major local load. In the IEA’s 2025 analysis of 2024 consumption, the United States accounted for 45% of global data-center electricity use, China 25%, and Europe 15%. Nearly half of US data-center capacity was concentrated in five regional clusters.

Concentration means a utility may need to serve several large facilities in the same transmission area at once. The resulting requirements can include substations, high-voltage lines, transformers, generation and reserves. Local timing matters too: a data center can be ready to operate in three to six years while some US grid infrastructure takes five to 15 years from planning to completion, according to the IEA’s 2025 US investment analysis.

Data centers are not the sole source of rising electricity demand. The IEA’s 2025 analysis estimates they account for around one-tenth of global demand growth to 2030. Their share is larger in some advanced economies, and their geographic concentration makes integration harder than the global percentage suggests.

Why are data centers a problem for the power grid?

Large, concentrated connections

A data center campus can request a connection measured in hundreds of megawatts or more, while nearby distribution and transmission equipment may have been planned for a much smaller, more gradual load. The engineering question is not only whether enough generation exists nationally; it is whether the local network can deliver the requested power at the required voltage and reliability.

Long equipment and interconnection lead times

The IEA reported that US grid-connection waits in 2024 were commonly one to three years and reached up to seven years in data-center hotspots. It also described transformer supply constraints. These are reported US conditions for that period, not a universal waiting time for every utility or project.

Uncertain project schedules

The IEA’s 2025 executive summary estimates that around 20% of planned data-center projects could be delayed if grid risks are not addressed. A planned project is not an operating facility: permitting, financing, equipment availability, customer demand and interconnection approval can all change its schedule or whether it proceeds.

Fast-changing AI loads

Traditional server workloads can be comparatively steady, but AI training and model serving can change demand quickly. The IEA describes these swings as a reason energy storage is becoming important for reliable supply. Rapid changes can require additional controls, reserves and power-quality equipment even when the annual energy total is unchanged.

Can the grid supply new data centers?

Often it can, but the answer is location- and schedule-specific. Utilities and regulators must assess available generation, transmission capacity, substation equipment, transformer supply, interconnection studies, permitting and the order in which projects are queued. A national electricity surplus does not guarantee that a particular site can receive a new connection when its building is complete.

The IEA’s US figures illustrate the timing mismatch: data centers were reported as taking three to six years to develop, compared with five to 15 years for much grid infrastructure. A connection wait of one to three years in 2024, or as long as seven years in hotspots, can therefore become the critical path.

  • Connection studies: determine whether local lines, substations and protection systems can serve the requested load.
  • Transmission and generation: may need expansion if existing supply cannot meet the facility’s peak and reserve requirements.
  • Equipment procurement: transformers and other high-voltage components can have long lead times.
  • Load certainty: utilities must distinguish a firm near-term requirement from a speculative campus or a staged build-out.

How do data centers keep the power on?

Continuous operation requires both facility equipment and a dependable external supply. A data center normally combines several layers rather than relying on one technology.

Grid connection

The local grid is usually the primary source. Multiple feeders, substations and protective systems can reduce the chance that a single failure disconnects the site, but redundancy does not make the facility independent of the grid.

Uninterruptible power supplies

UPS systems bridge the short interval between a grid disturbance and the arrival of backup generation. They also condition power and protect sensitive computing equipment from voltage and frequency events.

Backup generators

Generators can operate during outages or testing. Fuel storage, emissions permits, maintenance, staffing and refueling logistics determine how long they can support the load. Their presence does not eliminate the need for transmission and distribution capacity during normal operation.

Battery storage

The IEA’s 2026 update projects that 20–25 GW of battery storage could be installed in data centers globally by 2030. This is a projection, not an observed installed total. Batteries can provide fast response, ride-through and limited peak support; their value depends on duration, controls, charging arrangements and compensation for grid services.

Onsite generation

The IEA’s 2026 outlook identifies natural gas generation as a possible response to slow US grid connections and projects about 15–27 GW of onsite natural-gas capacity by 2030, mostly in the United States. It also estimates that reliable onsite electricity for critical and variable loads may require 30%–70% more gas-fired generation infrastructure than the demand itself, reflecting redundancy and operating requirements. These are projections, and the IEA notes design, supply-chain, regulatory and financial questions; onsite gas does not remove the need to address grid bottlenecks.

What supplies the electricity?

The IEA’s 2025 supply analysis expects renewables and natural gas to lead near-term additions, with nuclear playing a growing role. Wind and solar generation depend on the wider grid, transmission and, in many situations, storage or other dispatchable resources. Gas can provide dispatchable output, while nuclear and geothermal are longer-term or emerging options in the IEA outlook.

Do not confuse a procurement contract with the physical electricity serving a site. A power-purchase agreement or renewable-energy certificate can support a company’s contracting strategy, but electrons consumed at a particular moment come through the local grid and any onsite generation. The IEA’s accounting of physical electricity consumed uses onsite generation and the local grid mix rather than simply an operator’s contractual mix.

Comparison axis Why it matters
Physical supply versus contract Shows what generation and grid infrastructure actually serve the load at a given time.
Availability and dispatchability Shows whether output can follow demand or needs storage, reserves or grid balancing.
Time to connect versus time to build Determines whether the network can be ready when the facility is scheduled to open.
Global versus local scale Separates a modest worldwide share from a potentially dominant regional load.

Will data centers make electricity more expensive?

Global IEA estimates cannot determine whether bills will rise for a particular household or business. The result depends on local utility rates, regulatory decisions, who pays for new transmission and generation, how costs are allocated among customers, market conditions, and whether a project adds supply or competes for constrained capacity.

A large new customer can improve utilization of existing infrastructure in one location, while a cluster that requires new substations, lines or generation can create costs that regulators must assign. Those effects are decided in local planning and rate cases, not by the global 485 TWh or 950 TWh figures alone. Consumers should examine their utility’s filings, tariff changes and regulator decisions for a local answer.

Why are forecasts so uncertain?

Data-center electricity use depends on uncertain technology and infrastructure choices: how quickly AI is adopted, how efficient hardware and software become, how much computing is performed, whether projects receive grid connections, and whether bottlenecks delay construction.

The IEA’s 2025 demand analysis illustrates the range. Its Base Case reached about 945 TWh in 2030, while sensitivity cases for 2035 ranged from around 700 TWh in the Headwinds case to more than 1,700 TWh in the Lift-Off case. The IEA’s 2026 update replaces the earlier central 2030 figure with about 950 TWh. These scenario values are not interchangeable measurements: they come from different report vintages, years and assumptions.

The 2026 update says near-term value-chain bottlenecks limit some upside, while longer-term growth could still exceed the central outlook. That is why a forecast should be read as a conditional estimate rather than a promise that every announced campus will operate at full capacity.

How to interpret a data-center power claim

  1. Identify the measure. Check whether the number is MW or GW of capacity, or MWh/TWh of energy.
  2. Check the date and geography. A 2024 global estimate cannot be substituted for a 2025 estimate or a US-specific figure.
  3. Separate observed values from projections. Labels such as “planned,” “could,” “projected” and “Base Case” indicate scenarios, not operating results.
  4. Ask what is included. Determine whether the figure covers servers only or also cooling, networking, UPS losses, generators and other facility loads.
  5. Test the local implication. Compare the requested connection with regional transmission, substation, transformer and generation plans.
  6. Check the supply claim. Distinguish physical electricity delivered through the grid from contracts such as PPAs.

Bottom line

Data centers are a rapidly growing electricity load, with the IEA estimating 485 TWh of global use in 2025 and projecting about 950 TWh in 2030. The headline global share understates local effects because capacity is concentrated in regional clusters. Power capacity is an instantaneous rate, while consumption is energy over time; reliable operation requires grid connections plus UPS systems, generators, storage and careful load management. Whether new facilities cause delays, higher bills or reliability problems depends on local infrastructure, regulation and project timing, so global forecasts cannot answer a community-specific question by themselves.
