A complete data-center power-distribution chain runs from the utility or generator connection to the receptacles on each server rack. Medium-voltage switchgear and transformers handle the service entrance; low-voltage switchboards, transfer equipment and UPS systems provide protection and continuity; floor PDUs, remote power panels, busway and rack PDUs deliver usable circuits to rows and cabinets. Buying the layers as a coordinated system—rather than selecting isolated boxes—is the key to capacity, selectivity, maintainability and safe expansion.

What belongs in a complete data-center distribution chain?

Use the following sequence as the backbone of the one-line diagram. Actual arrangements vary by utility service, generator topology, voltage, redundancy objective and local code, but every layer has a distinct job.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Layer Primary job Decisions that drive the purchase
Medium-voltage switchgear and MV/LV transformers Receive utility or generator power, isolate equipment and protect the campus service Service voltage, short-circuit current, grounding, arc-flash inputs, selective coordination and maintainable isolation
Low-voltage switchboards and breakers Distribute power to major mechanical and IT branches and clear faults Interrupting and withstand ratings, breaker frame and trip settings, bus rating, neutral arrangement and maintenance access
Automatic or static transfer equipment Move loads between normal and alternate sources Transfer time, source synchronization, bypass, neutral switching, controls and behavior during faults or maintenance
UPS and energy storage Provide ride-through and power conditioning for critical IT loads Usable kW/kVA, efficiency at expected loading, autonomy, battery technology, bypass, fault clearing and serviceability
Floor PDU, remote power panel and panelboard Transform (where required), provide branch breakers and feed rows Raised-floor or overhead routing, transformer impedance and K-factor, breaker ways, monitoring and spare capacity
Busway Provide a modular feeder with plug-in connection points along a row Amperage, conductor configuration, tap density, short-circuit withstand, temperature rise, ingress protection and future taps
Rack PDU Deliver the final multi-outlet connection to servers and network equipment Input plug and phase, voltage, branch and total current, outlet mix, metering, switching, network security and form factor

Incoming medium-voltage equipment

Medium-voltage switchgear and MV/LV transformers sit at the utility or generator interface. A Schneider Electric technical paper describes MV switchgear as generally being in the electrical space of large-capacity data centers, typically those with more than 1 MW of IT load. That threshold is a planning reference, not a universal rule: utility voltage, campus size and the serving utility’s requirements can place MV equipment in smaller or larger projects.

Before requesting quotes, obtain the utility service voltage, available fault current, grounding method and generator contribution. Give the electrical engineer the arc-flash study inputs and require selective-coordination analysis. Specify compartments, shutters, interlocks, withdrawable or fixed construction, arc-resistant requirements where applicable, and a means of isolating equipment for maintenance without defeating the intended redundant path.

Low-voltage switchboards, ATS and STS

Low-voltage switchboards and circuit breakers distribute power after transformation. Automatic transfer switches (ATS) transfer a load between normal and alternate sources; static transfer switches (STS) use solid-state switching for very fast transfers between already-available sources. They are not interchangeable: an ATS may be appropriate for a generator-backed branch, while an STS can protect a sensitive dual-cord load when both sources are continuously conditioned.

Specify the continuous bus and feeder ratings, interrupting rating, short-time withstand, breaker trip units, maintenance bypass and control power. For transfer equipment, define source synchronization, acceptable transfer time, open- or closed-transition behavior, neutral switching, retransfer logic, in-phase monitoring and what happens when one source is outside limits. A redundant topology only works if protection settings, bypasses and maintenance procedures preserve both paths.

UPS and conditioned power

UPS systems bridge interruptions and condition power for critical IT loads. Size by usable kW and kVA, not by nameplate alone, and evaluate efficiency across the load range you will actually operate. Document battery or other energy-storage technology, required autonomy, recharge time, bypass capacity, overload behavior, fault-clearing coordination and replacement access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the UPS input and output switchboards, bypass path and downstream distribution in one protection study. A UPS that cannot pass enough fault current to clear a downstream breaker, or whose bypass has different protection settings, can turn a small branch fault into a larger outage. Require operating modes and transfer sequences in the commissioning procedure rather than relying on a generic factory default.

How floor PDUs, RPPs and panelboards feed rows

A floor PDU can transform voltage and distribute multiple branch circuits. A remote power panel (RPP) places branch breakers and monitoring closer to the rows, reducing long branch runs. Panelboards provide a simpler branch-circuit layer where transformation and extensive monitoring are not needed. The choice depends on voltage strategy, floor layout, maintenance access and whether the design uses raised-floor or overhead pathways.

Specify transformer impedance and K-factor when nonlinear loads and harmonic heating make them relevant. List the number and type of breaker ways, main-device rating, metering points, spare positions, enclosure dimensions, working clearances and arc-flash labeling. Reserve physical and electrical capacity for the five-year load plan; an apparently inexpensive panel with no spare ways can force an expensive shutdown later.

When busway is better than cable-and-panel distribution

Busway is a modular feeder installed along a row or zone, with tap boxes or plug-in units that can be added as cabinets arrive. Fixed cable-and-panel distribution uses dedicated feeders and branch circuits from panels to each destination. Neither is automatically superior; compare the complete installed and operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor Busway Fixed cable and panels
Expansion method Add compatible tap boxes or plug-in units at planned locations Install new feeders, breakers and cable runs from available panel capacity
Installation disruption More front-loaded engineering and support installation; later cabinet changes can be faster Often straightforward for a fixed layout, but new circuits may require ceiling, floor or aisle work
Fault isolation Depends on tap-unit protection and busway segmentation; verify selectivity Individual branch circuits are familiar and readily isolated when panel capacity is available
Space and routing Uses a defined overhead or underfloor route and needs tap access and clearances Needs cable tray, conduit or raised-floor pathways sized for the branch count
Best fit High-density rows with frequent moves, adds or changing rack power Stable layouts, smaller expansions or projects where conventional panels are preferred
Lifecycle cost Can reduce later labor and outage risk, but has higher system-specific component costs May cost less initially for a simple layout; expansion labor and disruption can dominate later

ABB documents Busway LC AC solutions from 225 to 6,000 A and states compliance with IEC 61439. Those published ratings describe a product family, not a blanket approval for every installation. Require the selected assembly’s verified short-circuit withstand, conductor arrangement, neutral and protective-earth configuration, temperature-rise data, ingress protection, fire stopping and installation clearances.

Build a one-line and load-growth schedule before choosing the bus rating. Include present and projected phase currents, diversity assumptions, harmonic content and future tap locations. Check that each tap’s protective device coordinates with upstream breakers and that a fault at one cabinet will not remove an entire row.

How to choose a rack PDU

The rack PDU is the final connection to servers, storage and network equipment. Eaton describes rack-mount PDUs as devices that distribute power to racks where multiple outlets are needed. Products generally fall into basic, metered, switched, automatic-transfer (ATS) and hot-swap categories, with 0U vertical and 1U or 2U horizontal form factors.

1. Match the electrical input

  • Record voltage, frequency, phase and the upstream receptacle or plug type.
  • Set continuous current and kVA limits from the branch breaker and conductor rating, applying the code-required continuous-load rules and the manufacturer’s derating.
  • Confirm the PDU’s short-circuit rating, breaker rating and cord temperature rating are compatible with the branch circuit.
  • For three-phase models, decide whether loads will be balanced across phases and whether the outlet configuration supports that plan.

2. Select outlet mix and form factor

  • Count present and five-year projected devices, then add physically usable spare outlets rather than only spare amperage.
  • Choose the required C13, C19 or other connector mix from the actual server and power-supply plugs; do not assume an adapter is acceptable in a high-density cabinet.
  • Use 0U vertical units to preserve rack units when the cabinet’s side channels and rear clearance permit them. Use 1U or 2U horizontal units when vertical mounting is unavailable or when a smaller outlet count is sufficient.
  • Verify cord exit direction, retaining features, locking outlets, cable bend radius and access to the PDU display or reset controls.

3. Decide how much monitoring and control you need

Type Useful when Questions to ask the vendor
Basic Loads are stable and branch measurements are available upstream Are total and branch protections visible locally? What alarms are available?
Metered You need current, voltage, power and energy data without remote outlet switching Where is metering measured, what is the stated accuracy, and how are readings exported?
Switched Remote sequencing, outlet control or selective reboot is required Can switching be limited by outlet, bank or user role? What prevents accidental shutdown?
ATS A single-cord device needs two independent sources What are source qualification limits, transfer time, bypass behavior and neutral arrangement?
Hot-swap or modular Control components must be replaceable with minimal interruption Which parts are replaceable live, and what operating restrictions apply during replacement?

Require network protocol support, authentication, role-based permissions, encryption, certificate handling, event logs, time synchronization, firmware support life and a documented process for security updates. Remote switching is an operational capability, not a substitute for branch isolation or lockout/tagout. Place management interfaces on the appropriate management network and disable unused services.

Environmental and thermal ratings that cannot be optional

Rack corridors can run hotter than the electrical room, especially around high-density accelerators. ASHRAE TC9.9 lists a typical 0–40 °C operating range at maximum rated power for floor-mounted PDUs and RPPs. Its typical busway guidance is 40 °C ambient with no more than a 55 °C hot-spot rise. For rack PDUs, TC9.9 recommends a maximum ambient rating of at least 60 °C where possible.

Put those limits in the equipment schedule and verify how the manufacturer defines ambient temperature, hot spot, altitude derating, humidity and condensation. Also specify dust exposure, ingress protection, seismic requirements where applicable, and whether the enclosure sits in a supply-air, return-air or contained aisle. A rack PDU rated only for a cool electrical room is not suitable merely because its current rating looks adequate.

Standards, listing and authority requirements

NFPA lists the 2026 edition of NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, as the current edition. The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), however, determines which edition and amendments govern a project. Confirm adoption dates, local amendments, utility rules and inspection requirements before procurement.

IEC 61439-5:2023 covers public-network distribution assemblies up to 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC. For busway and other assemblies, require the applicable assembly verification, temperature-rise evidence, short-circuit test or calculation, dielectric tests, marking and installation instructions. ASHRAE TC9.9 recommends designing to IEC 61439 at a minimum; its AI framework also states that it does not create mandatory requirements or supersede applicable codes and standards.

A practical procurement process

  1. Draw the one-line. Trace utility and generator sources through MV/LV gear, transformers, UPS, ATS or STS, floor distribution, busway and each rack. Mark normal, alternate and maintenance paths.
  2. Build the load schedule. Record present and five-year projected IT load by row, rack and phase. Include startup current, harmonic-producing equipment and cooling loads where they affect feeders or generators.
  3. Define electrical inputs. State voltage, phase, frequency, grounding, available short-circuit current, continuous current, protection coordination and arc-flash-study requirements.
  4. Select the layers. Decide which functions belong in MV/LV switchgear, transformers, UPS, ATS/STS, floor PDU, RPP, panelboard, busway and rack PDU. Do not let a rack-PDU quote hide missing upstream capacity.
  5. Write a compliance schedule. Require certified ratings, assembly verification, listing, environmental limits, derating curves, dimensions, clearances and installation restrictions in every bid.
  6. Define operations and cybersecurity. Specify metering points, alarm thresholds, protocols, authentication, logging, firmware support, remote-control permissions and integration ownership.
  7. Test resilience. Compare A/B feeds, UPS topology, bypass, maintainable isolation, spare capacity and expansion method against the target availability objective. Include single-failure and maintenance scenarios.
  8. Contract commissioning. Obtain factory- and site-acceptance-test procedures, commissioning scripts, protection settings, thermal checks, transfer tests, alarm tests and as-built documentation.
  9. Plan maintenance. Request maintenance intervals, spare-parts lists, safe access requirements, battery replacement method, service coverage and response-time commitments.
  10. Revalidate at order time. Recheck the exact model, lead time, certification, firmware support and price because catalogs and code editions change.

Common buying mistakes and their fixes

Buying by amperage alone

A 60-A label does not prove that a PDU fits the plug, phase balance, breaker, temperature or fault-duty requirements. Tie every current figure to voltage, phase, continuous-load assumptions, ambient rating and upstream protection.

Counting outlets but not connectors

An outlet count can look generous while the wrong C13/C19 mix forces adapters or power strips. Inventory the actual equipment plugs and reserve outlets by cabinet before selecting the model.

Ignoring bypass and maintenance paths

UPS, ATS, STS and switchboard bypasses must be shown on the one-line and tested. A bypass that cannot be isolated safely, or that is not coordinated with downstream protection, can undermine an otherwise redundant design.

Leaving no room for growth

Reserve breaker ways, transformer capacity, busway tap positions, rack-PDU outlets and phase headroom. State the growth horizon explicitly; “future-ready” is not a measurable specification.

Putting management interfaces on an unprotected network

Remote metering and switching add attack surface. Require authentication, encrypted management, least-privilege roles, logging, secure firmware processes and a documented recovery method before enabling network control.

Assuming the newest code automatically applies

The 2026 NEC is the current NFPA edition, but the locally adopted edition and amendments control the inspection. Have the AHJ and design professional confirm the governing rules before equipment is released.

Decision framework: which distribution approach fits?

  • Choose fixed cable and panels when the layout is stable, branch circuits are few, conventional installation is preferred and expansion can be scheduled without frequent row changes.
  • Choose busway when rows are high-density, cabinets will be added or moved regularly, and the team can enforce tap-unit compatibility, access and selective coordination.
  • Choose metered rack PDUs when capacity planning and alarm visibility matter but remote outlet control is not required.
  • Choose switched rack PDUs when controlled sequencing or remote reboot is a documented operational need and cybersecurity controls are mature.
  • Choose rack ATS PDUs only for equipment that genuinely needs two independent sources at the cabinet and cannot use dual-cord power supplies.

Bottom line

Buy data-center power distribution as one coordinated electrical system. Start with the one-line and projected load, then specify protection, transfer behavior, bypasses, environmental limits, verified assembly ratings, monitoring and maintenance access at every layer. Busway earns its premium when rows change often; fixed panels remain effective for stable layouts. At the rack, select the PDU by input and outlet compatibility first, then add metering, switching or transfer functions only when the operating model justifies their cost and security burden.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important specification for a rack PDU?

Start with electrical compatibility: input voltage and phase, plug, branch-breaker and cord ratings, continuous current, outlet connectors and environmental rating. Then specify metering or switching features.

How much spare capacity should a data center buy?

Set a documented present and five-year load plan by row, rack and phase. Reserve spare breaker ways, busway tap positions, outlets and electrical headroom according to that plan rather than using an arbitrary percentage.

Is busway safer than cable-and-panel distribution?

Neither is inherently safer. Safety depends on verified ratings, short-circuit coordination, installation, access control, fire stopping, labeling and commissioning. Busway adds modular taps; cable-and-panel systems provide conventional individually protected circuits.

Does the 2026 NEC apply to every data-center project?

NFPA identifies the 2026 edition as current, but the AHJ’s adopted edition, amendments and utility requirements govern the project. Confirm those rules before ordering equipment.
