Co-op with friends through password matching
To arrange a session with a friend, use the game’s Network settings to choose the same password, then place or look for a summon sign in the world. Password matching is specifically intended to make connecting with friends easier than relying only on open matchmaking. The password does not make every other matchmaking rule disappear: the session still uses the game’s online and area requirements, and the host controls the world in which progress is recorded.

What counts as online play
- Co-op: summon other players to help defeat enemies and bosses in the host’s world.
- PvP: fight other players through the game’s competitive summon and invasion interactions.
- Ghosts: brief recordings that show another player’s recent movement and can reveal routes or hazards.
- Messages: player-written hints, warnings and jokes placed in the environment.
- Bloodstains: replays that show how another character died, useful for spotting ambushes or lethal drops.
Because ghosts, messages and bloodstains are also online interactions, a player can benefit from the network layer without joining a live co-op or PvP session.

Step-by-step: setting up a co-op session
- Use the same platform family. The official material identifies separate PlayStation, Xbox and Windows releases, but does not document cross-platform multiplayer. Plan the session on the same network ecosystem.
- Confirm online access. On PS4, verify PlayStation Plus; on Xbox One, verify Xbox LIVE Gold Membership; on Steam, sign in to the PC service.
- Choose a matching password. Open the in-game Network settings and have every participant enter exactly the same password, including capitalization if the game distinguishes it.

- Expect level scaling. A much higher-level helper is scaled down toward the lower-level player. The adjustment supports cooperation but does not remove the game’s stamina, timing and positioning demands.

How hard is Soul of Cinder?
Bandai Namco markets Dark Souls III as offering an “unrelenting challenge” alongside rewarding action-RPG gameplay. That is a qualitative description, not a score. The official pages reviewed do not publish a numerical difficulty rating, a completion percentage or an official recommended level for Soul of Cinder.
Why the fight feels demanding
Soul of Cinder asks you to read attack timing, manage stamina and adapt as the battle changes. A strategy that works against one phase can become unsafe when the boss changes weapon behavior or range. The challenge therefore comes less from a single published statistic and more from learning patterns, controlling distance and choosing when to heal or attack.
Build flexibility helps, but does not remove the learning curve
Dark Souls III supports many combinations of weapons, armor, magic and crafting choices. That flexibility lets you adjust damage type, reach, defenses and resource use to suit your play style. A practical preparation checklist
- Enter with a weapon and stats you already understand rather than changing several systems at once.
- Spend a few attempts observing attack cues and recovery windows instead of measuring success only by damage dealt.
- Keep enough stamina to evade after an attack; exhausting the bar can turn a safe opening into a hit.
- Use the game’s online options if you want help, remembering that co-op changes enemy behavior and encounter pacing.
- Treat a defeat as information about timing, range or positioning. The “unrelenting” label describes the learning demand, not an official numeric tier.

Using a base-game save with The Fire Fades Edition
FromSoftware gives a clear same-platform edition-upgrade answer: “You can use the same save data.” A character created in the base game can therefore continue when you install or switch to The Fire Fades Edition on that platform.
What happens to DLC progress
The qualification is important: “the data saved after DLC will not be found in the save data created without DLC.” In practical terms, the base save remains usable with the complete edition, but a copy that lacks the DLC cannot expose progress made in Ashes of Ariandel or The Ringed City. Do not treat a no-DLC installation as a reversible way to browse DLC progress.

What is not officially documented
The reviewed Dark Souls III FAQ does not document a guaranteed transfer path for PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to a newer Xbox generation, console to PC, or PC to console. Safer upgrade procedure
- Finish any backup or cloud-upload process offered by your platform before uninstalling the original edition.
- Install the complete edition on the same platform family and sign in to the same platform account.
- Launch the game and check that the existing character appears before deleting the old installation or local save.
- Enter DLC areas only after confirming that the installed edition includes them.
- Keep the original save backup until you have verified both the character and inventory in the new installation.
This protects against ordinary storage or account mistakes; it does not create a cross-platform transfer method that the official material does not promise.
Common multiplayer and save problems
A friend’s summon sign is missing
- Check that both players are on the same platform ecosystem and online.
- Re-enter the exact same password and confirm that one player is placing the sign while the other is searching.
- Verify the host still has an eligible encounter in the area.
- On PS4 or Xbox One, confirm the required online membership is active.
- Restart the online session if the network state has changed since the game was launched.
The higher-level helper feels weaker than expected

Messages, ghosts and bloodstains are online features. Check the platform connection and membership requirement rather than treating their absence as a missing edition feature.
DLC progress is missing after returning to the base edition
This is the documented save limitation. DLC data saved after entering DLC content will not appear in a save created without that DLC. Reinstall or launch the edition that contains the relevant chapters and use the same-platform save.
