For random matchmaking, start at the Brotherhood of Blood arena in Undead Purgatory. Its duel queue ignores Soul Memory, and established PvP references identify it as the most reliable place to encounter randomly selected opponents. The Blue Sentinels arena in the Cathedral of Blue is the better fit for arranged practice or a group that has agreed to meet, because each duel consumes a Token of Fidelity and spontaneous activity is usually lower.
Both covenants use the same three official layouts: Bridge, Maze and Tower. The game presents them as three statues rather than a normal map-selection screen. Bridge is narrow and makes ring-outs a constant danger; Maze adds two levels and broken sightlines; Tower is the broadest, most predictable stage for spacing. The higher-ranked player controls the chosen layout when two players match, while equal ranks produce a random choice.

At a glance: which arena should you use?
| Question | Best answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Where should I look for an unplanned duel? | Brotherhood of Blood, Undead Purgatory | Its arena is described as the strongest option for random matchmaking and does not use normal Soul Memory matching. |
| Where should I meet a specific opponent? | Blue Sentinels, Cathedral of Blue | The same three-layout system is available, but the entry item requirement tends to discourage casual queue traffic. |
| Which map is safest for consistent spacing? | Tower | The circular floor is the most open and has fewer forced route changes than Bridge or Maze. |
| Which map punishes a missed roll near an edge? | Bridge | The long, narrow platform leaves little room to recover from a bad angle or a deliberate push toward the boundary. |
| Which map changes the fight vertically? | Maze | It has two levels, corners and sightline breaks that reward repositioning. |
No reliable, dated population count or average queue time is established for either arena. Activity varies with platform, region, time of day, community conventions and the number of players still using the covenant queues. Treat the recommendations above as practical community guidance, not a 2026 population measurement.
What the official Dark Souls II arenas are
Dark Souls II has two covenant-run duel arenas in the comparison here. The Brotherhood of Blood uses red phantoms and operates beside the Undead Purgatory bonfire. The Blue Sentinels use blue phantoms and operate beside the Cathedral of Blue bonfire. Each location has three statues. Selecting a statue is effectively voting for one of the three arena layouts.

These are consensual duels: the participating players enter an arena queue or accept the covenant challenge. That is different from an invasion, where one player initiates hostility and a phantom is sent into another player’s world. The covenants also provide invasion-related activities, but those should not be confused with the three-map duel selection at the statues.
An official 2014 PlayStation Blog announcement described the Blue Sentinels feature this way: “Once a member of the Blue Sentinels, PvP arenas will be opened up that allow you to duel fellow members.” The wording captures the intended function: a dedicated meeting place for covenant-versus-covenant combat rather than an ordinary world encounter.
Brotherhood of Blood: the practical default for random duels
Location and phantom identity
Travel to the Undead Purgatory bonfire and use the statues beside it. Both participants enter as red phantoms, making the covenant’s identity immediately visible during the match. The area is the Brotherhood of Blood’s dedicated arena access point.
Entry requirement and matchmaking
You need a Token of Spite to enter a Brotherhood of Blood duel. The token is an eligibility item rather than a per-match charge in the cited covenant rules. The arena is described as ignoring Soul Memory, so the normal Soul Memory range that governs many Dark Souls II connections is not the deciding filter here.
Ignoring Soul Memory does not guarantee an opponent. A queue still needs another player using the same service, and activity can be uneven across regions, platforms and hours. Character level conventions, connection quality and the surviving player base still affect whom you can meet.
Ranking effect
A Brotherhood of Blood victory adds one covenant point. A defeat removes one point, but the total cannot fall below zero. This makes repeated losses visible in progression without creating a negative score. If you are testing a new weapon or unfamiliar layout, understand that experimentation can affect your covenant standing.
When to choose it
- Choose it first when you want an opponent selected from whoever is currently queuing.
- Use it when Soul Memory differences would otherwise make ordinary matching inconvenient.
- Expect the most spontaneous activity of the two official covenant arenas, while remembering that no current queue-time statistic is established.
- Use the red-phantom invasion tools separately when you want to attack a host world instead of entering a consensual duel.
Blue Sentinels: a better fit for arranged or deliberate practice
Location and phantom identity
The Blue Sentinels statues stand beside the Cathedral of Blue bonfire. Players who enter the duel appear as blue phantoms. The visual distinction matters when you are coordinating a practice session or identifying the covenant context of a match.
Rank #2
Token of Fidelity cost
Each Blue Sentinels duel consumes one Token of Fidelity. Because the item is spent on every match, players are less likely to leave the queue running casually. That cost is the main practical reason references describe the arena as quieter for spontaneous matchmaking.
Matchmaking and ranking
The Blue Sentinels arena is a separate covenant duel queue; the cited descriptions do not report an ordinary Soul Memory restriction for it. A win awards a covenant point. Unlike Brotherhood of Blood, the reference does not report an equivalent point loss for a defeat, so the two ranking systems should not be treated as mirror images.
When to choose it
- Use it when both players have agreed on a meeting point, time and covenant.
- Choose it for focused practice when preserving a controlled environment matters more than finding the largest possible random pool.
- Budget a Token of Fidelity for every duel you plan to run.
- Use its blue-phantom defense and sin-targeting invasion functions when you want a hostile encounter outside the consensual arena queue.
The three official layouts
The game does not label these choices with a conventional map-select interface. The community names them from the physical shape represented by each statue. You can therefore recognize the same three options at either covenant location.
Bridge
Bridge is a relatively long bridge connecting two sides. Its narrow footprint compresses every decision: the distance between weapons, the timing of a roll and the angle of a retreat all happen close to an edge. A missed approach can become a ring-out rather than ordinary damage.

- Key awareness: keep track of your heels and your opponent’s escape route.
- Best for: players who enjoy deliberate spacing, roll timing and boundary pressure.
- Risk: an accidental or intentional edge loss can decide the round before damage totals matter.
Maze
Maze is labyrinthine and has two levels. Walls and corners break long sightlines, while the vertical change lets a player reposition rather than continue a straight exchange. The result is less predictable than Bridge or Tower: finding the opponent, choosing a route and avoiding a corner trap are part of the duel.
- Main pressure: navigation through a two-level space.
- Key awareness: watch for sightline breaks and do not assume an opponent remains on the level where you last saw them.
- Best for: players who like repositioning, ambush angles and corner pressure.
- Risk: chasing through a poor route can give up initiative or leave you trapped against a wall.
Tower
Tower is a large circular stage with wooden scaffolding in the center. The broad outer floor gives melee builds room to maneuver and makes distance easier to read. Central scaffolding creates an obstacle without turning the whole arena into a corridor.
- Main pressure: managing open space around a central obstruction.
- Key awareness: preserve a retreat lane instead of backing blindly into the scaffolding.
- Best for: neutral footsies, repeatable spacing and learning an opponent’s attack range.
- Risk: the open floor offers fewer environmental excuses; poor timing and overextension remain exposed.
How statue selection is decided
Both players choose through the statues, but the result is not a guaranteed personal pick. When two players match, the higher covenant rank determines which map is used. If their ranks are equal, the game resolves the choice randomly.
- At the covenant arena bonfire, approach the three statues.
- Use the statue corresponding to Bridge, Maze or Tower according to the community’s left-to-right naming convention.
- Enter the covenant duel queue after confirming the required entry item.
- When a partner is found, allow for the rank rule: the higher-ranked player’s vote controls; equal ranks are random.
Because the rank rule is evaluated between both participants, repeatedly selecting one statue does not guarantee that layout in matchmaking. An arranged group can agree on a preference, but the game’s priority rule still governs the resulting arena.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDuels and invasions are different activities
Consensual arena duels
A duel starts because both sides enter the covenant arena process or accept its challenge. The match takes place on Bridge, Maze or Tower, and the covenant point outcome follows that covenant’s rules. This is the activity compared in the arena tables.
Hostile invasions
An invasion is initiated by the invader and places a hostile phantom in another player’s world. Brotherhood of Blood pairs its arena with red-phantom invasion tools. Blue Sentinels pairs its arena with blue-phantom defense and sin-targeting invasions. An invasion has a host-world objective and does not provide the controlled three-layout duel experience.
Other area-specific formats
Bell Keepers and Rat King offer area-specific invasion formats. They are legitimate PvP activities, but they are not additional versions of the official three-map covenant duel arenas discussed here. Choose them when the area rule itself is the attraction, not when you are trying to select Bridge, Maze or Tower.
Comparison by the decisions that matter
| Criterion | Brotherhood of Blood | Blue Sentinels |
|---|---|---|
| Queue availability | Generally regarded as the stronger random-duel option; no dated population or queue-time measurement is established. | Usually quieter for spontaneous activity because a Token of Fidelity is spent per duel; no dated population or queue-time measurement is established. |
| Map openness | Uses Bridge, Maze and Tower; openness depends on the statue outcome, not the covenant. | Uses the same three layouts; openness depends on the statue outcome, not the covenant. |
| Fall or ring-out risk | Highest on Bridge, moderate and route-dependent on Maze, lowest as a direct concern on Tower. | Identical layout-based risk: the covenant does not alter the physical maps. |
| Vertical complexity | Concentrated in Maze’s two-level design. | Concentrated in Maze’s two-level design. |
| Entry-item cost | Token of Spite required; the cited rules do not describe it as consumed for each duel. | One Token of Fidelity consumed for each duel. |
| Ranking penalty | Loss removes one point, but the total cannot go below zero. | A win awards a point; no equivalent loss penalty is reported in the cited reference. |
| Random versus organized fights | Best first stop for random opponents; also usable for arranged matches. | More suitable for arranged or low-traffic practice; still usable for random matches when another player is present. |
Finding active PvP when the queue is quiet
There is no dependable public figure that tells you how many people are currently waiting in either arena. Instead, use a repeatable process that separates a matchmaking problem from an access problem.

For Brotherhood of Blood, check the statues beside the Undead Purgatory bonfire. For Blue Sentinels, check the statues beside the Cathedral of Blue bonfire. The covenant and bonfire pairing matters; an area-specific invasion altar is not a substitute for the duel statues.
Check the required item
A missing Token of Spite prevents Brotherhood of Blood entry. A Blue Sentinels duel consumes a Token of Fidelity, so an empty inventory can explain why a planned session stops after one match.

Allow for activity variation
Try at different times rather than treating one empty queue as proof that the arena is permanently inactive. Region, platform and the conventions used by the remaining community can change the available pool.
Coordinate when random matching fails
For a specific opponent, arrange the covenant, location and session time in advance. Blue Sentinels is particularly suited to this approach because both players can account for the per-duel Token of Fidelity cost. Remember that a higher covenant rank can still decide the map.
Do not infer a Soul Memory error too quickly
Both covenant arena descriptions separate their queues from ordinary Soul Memory matching. A failed connection can therefore reflect activity, version or network conditions rather than a normal Soul Memory range. Soul Memory independence expands eligibility; it does not create an opponent where none is waiting.

Learning neutral spacing
Start with Tower if the choice is available. Its large circular floor and central scaffolding make distance easier to observe than in a corridor or multi-level labyrinth. Use the room to identify how far attacks reach, where a retreat ends and when an approach becomes an overextension.
Practicing edge control
Choose Bridge when you specifically want to train boundary awareness. Keep the center behind you, force the opponent to make the dangerous retreat and avoid rolling without checking your remaining platform.
Practicing repositioning
Choose Maze to work on sightline management and vertical movement. Treat the two levels as separate tactical spaces: break contact intentionally, then re-enter from a position that does not expose you to corner pressure.

Running a controlled set
Arrange a Blue Sentinels meeting if both players want repeatable practice and can supply a Token of Fidelity for every duel. Agree beforehand whether the goal is a particular layout, a weapon matchup or simply a number of rounds; the rank rule means the map still may not follow the lower-ranked player’s vote.

Looking for variety
Use Brotherhood of Blood and accept the statue result. Random map outcomes expose you to all three official layouts and avoid turning every session into a single-stage exercise.
Common mistakes and fixes
Expecting a normal world invasion
If you want to fight inside an arena, queue at the covenant statues. If you want to attack or defend a host world, use the covenant’s invasion function instead. The two activities have different entry conditions and objectives.
Assuming a preferred statue guarantees the map
The statue is a vote, not an unconditional selection. Check covenant ranks: the higher-ranked participant controls the result, and equal ranks are random.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Confusing low activity with a level mismatch
The arena queues are described as separate from ordinary Soul Memory restrictions. Try another time, verify the entry item and coordinate with another player before concluding that character progression is the cause.
Ignoring the ranking consequences
Brotherhood of Blood losses reduce covenant points to a floor of zero. Blue Sentinels does not have a corresponding loss penalty in the cited rules. Choose a practice environment with that difference in mind.
Spending the wrong resource
Brotherhood of Blood uses a Token of Spite for access. Blue Sentinels consumes a Token of Fidelity per duel. Confirm the covenant before using an item or planning a long session.
Decision guide
- Want the highest chance of a random duel? Go to Brotherhood of Blood at Undead Purgatory.
- Have a named opponent and a scheduled session? Use the covenant arena that both players can access; Blue Sentinels is practical when each player has enough Tokens of Fidelity.
- Need a spacious stage? Prefer Tower.
- Want edge-pressure practice? Prefer Bridge.
- Want vertical routes and broken sightlines? Prefer Maze.
- Did your statue choice lose? Check covenant ranks; a higher-ranked opponent controls the layout, while equal ranks are resolved randomly.
- Is no one appearing? Verify the bonfire location and entry item, then try another activity window or arrange a session. No reliable current population count can establish a guaranteed queue time.
What to remember
Dark Souls II’s official covenant duel system is compact: two covenant arenas, three shared layouts and a statue-based vote controlled by covenant rank. Brotherhood of Blood at Undead Purgatory is the sensible first stop for random matchmaking. Blue Sentinels at the Cathedral of Blue is better approached as an organized or deliberate practice arena because every duel spends a Token of Fidelity. Bridge tests edge awareness, Maze tests navigation across two levels and Tower provides the clearest open space for stable footsies. Arena queues are independent of ordinary Soul Memory rules, but real-world activity remains variable and no dated population report supplies a guaranteed answer for when an opponent will appear.
