A dark-matter halo is the enormous, invisible mass distribution that surrounds a galaxy and is detected through its gravity. A dark galaxy is the galaxy-scale system itself: an exceptionally faint or diffuse collection of stars, gas or globular clusters whose visible light can be overwhelmed by dark matter—or, in some cases, whose measured mass contains very little dark matter. A halo is the surrounding structure; a dark galaxy is the faint galactic object.
The distinction in one table
| Question | Dark-matter halo | Dark galaxy |
|---|---|---|
| What the term names | An extended, invisible mass distribution around a galaxy | An unusually faint, diffuse galaxy-scale system |
| How astronomers find it | By measuring gravity through rotation curves, stellar or gas motions, and gravitational lensing | By detecting very low-surface-brightness light, sparse stars or globular clusters, then measuring dynamics or lensing |
| What is visible | Usually little or none of the halo itself; the luminous galaxy sits inside it | Some stars, gas, clusters or diffuse light, but far less light than an ordinary galaxy of comparable extent |
| How dark matter relates to it | Dark matter is the defining mass component | The dark-matter fraction differs from object to object; the label describes faintness, not a fixed composition |
| Typical relationship | Hosts and helps shape the visible galaxy | Usually treated as a galaxy embedded in, or strongly affected by, a halo |
The words therefore refer to different levels of description. “Halo” identifies a mass structure surrounding a luminous galaxy. “Dark galaxy” identifies a faint galaxy that must be studied as a system in its own right.

What is a dark-matter halo?
An invisible mass envelope around a galaxy
In the standard picture, the bright part of a galaxy—its stars, glowing gas and dust—is only the central luminous region. A much larger dark-matter halo surrounds it. The halo is not a second, hidden disk of stars. It is an inferred distribution of matter that does not emit, absorb or reflect detectable light.
NASA describes a galaxy’s halo as extending far beyond its familiar luminous region. Depending on how the boundary is defined, the halo can be up to 10 times larger in size and occupy up to 1,000 times the volume of the visible galaxy. Those figures describe the contrast between the broad gravitational structure and the compact region that telescopes see directly; they are not a universal measured radius for every galaxy.

Why astronomers believe halos exist
Although dark matter cannot be photographed in visible light, it contributes gravity. That gravity changes how stars and gas move, how galaxies orbit within groups and clusters, and how light from more distant galaxies is bent. Astronomers compare those motions or distortions with the amount of mass supplied by visible stars and gas. When the visible material cannot account for the observed gravitational effect, an extended dark component is inferred.
For an individual galaxy, a rotation curve is one familiar test. If orbital speeds remain high well outside the brightest part of the disk, the unseen mass must continue beyond the visible stars. Stellar and gas motions provide related evidence, while gravitational lensing measures how the total mass along a line of sight deflects background light.
Halos are mapped statistically as well as individually
Weak gravitational lensing is especially useful when an individual halo is too faint or too irregular to weigh directly. The halo’s gravity produces tiny, coherent changes in the apparent shapes of many background galaxies. NASA’s COSMOS-Webb explanation describes how those shape distortions can be combined to estimate the mass distribution associated with foreground galaxies and their halos. The method does not require the halo to shine; it uses the geometry of bent light.

Different techniques probe different parts of the system and carry different uncertainties. A statement that a galaxy “has a halo” means its gravitational influence is consistent with an extended dark component, not that an instrument has seen a dark outline around the galaxy.
What is a dark galaxy?
An observational description, not one fixed species
“Dark galaxy” is used for an exceptionally faint, diffuse galaxy or galaxy-like system. Its surface brightness can be so low that ordinary surveys miss it, even when the object spans a substantial physical area. Astronomers may first notice a handful of globular clusters, a barely visible diffuse glow, or unusual motions that reveal a system before its stars are clearly resolved.

The term does not require a particular dark-matter percentage. Some dark galaxies may be strongly dominated by dark matter, while other ultra-diffuse galaxies can contain little or no dark matter according to their measured dynamics. “Dark” refers primarily to how little light reaches the observer, not to a guaranteed chemical or mass composition.
How faintness is measured
Brightness is not only a question of total light. A compact object can be easy to see because its light is concentrated, while a much larger object with the same total light spread over a wide area can disappear into the background sky. Astronomers therefore pay attention to surface brightness, angular size, the number and distribution of resolved stars, and the presence of star clusters.
Once a candidate is identified, researchers need an independent mass estimate. They can measure the velocities of globular clusters or stars, track gas motions when gas is present, or use gravitational lensing. Comparing that dynamical mass with the light determines whether the object is dark-matter dominated, ordinary in its mass-to-light ratio, or unusually deficient in dark matter.
Why the two terms are often confused
Both terms contain the word “dark,” and both are discovered indirectly, but they describe different things. A halo is the large-scale gravitational container surrounding a galaxy. A dark galaxy is a low-light galaxy-scale system located within the broader population of galaxies. The faint galaxy can have its own halo, and that halo can be much more massive than the visible material associated with the galaxy.
Calling a faint object a dark galaxy does not mean the entire object is invisible. It may contain millions of stars, a small amount of diffuse light, or a conspicuous population of globular clusters. Conversely, calling a halo dark does not mean it is a dark galaxy: the halo surrounds many normal bright galaxies and is not itself classified by surface brightness.

How each one is detected
Methods used to infer a dark-matter halo
- Galaxy rotation: Speeds of stars or gas at different distances from the center reveal whether mass continues beyond the luminous disk.
- Stellar motions: The velocities and orbits of stars provide a dynamical estimate of the mass enclosed by a galaxy.
- Satellite and cluster motions: The movement of neighboring galaxies or globular clusters responds to the larger gravitational field.
- Strong lensing: In favorable alignments, a massive foreground system creates multiple images, arcs or rings whose geometry constrains the mass.
- Weak lensing: Small shape distortions in many background galaxies are combined to map an average or statistical halo signal.
All of these methods measure gravity. None detects dark matter through emitted or reflected light, because dark matter has not been observed to interact with detectable light in those ways.
Methods used to identify a dark galaxy
- Deep, wide-field imaging: Long exposures and careful background subtraction reveal diffuse light that ordinary images can hide.
- Globular-cluster searches: A sparse galaxy may be easier to identify through compact clusters than through its low-surface-brightness stellar body.
- Follow-up spectroscopy: Cluster or stellar velocities indicate how much mass is required to keep the system bound.
- Distance measurements: Knowing the distance is essential for converting apparent size and brightness into physical size and luminosity.
- Lensing checks: If the object is sufficiently massive or lies in a useful alignment, lensing supplies an independent mass constraint.
A detection is strongest when faint light, a coherent cluster population and a consistent dynamical mass all point to the same object. A smudge in one image alone is not enough to establish a dark galaxy.
Case study: CDG-2, a candidate dominated by dark matter
What was observed
In a NASA release dated February 18, 2026, observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Euclid mission and the Subaru Telescope revealed faint diffuse light around four globular clusters in the Perseus cluster. The object, designated CDG-2, was identified through that globular-cluster population rather than through a prominent conventional stellar disk.
NASA’s preliminary analysis gives CDG-2 a luminosity roughly equivalent to 6 million Sun-like stars. The same analysis indicates that approximately 99% of its mass appears to be dark matter. “Preliminary” matters here: the percentage is an estimate based on the available observations and modeling, not a directly counted inventory of invisible particles.
Why CDG-2 fits the dark-galaxy description
CDG-2 is discussed as a dark galaxy because the visible system is exceptionally faint and diffuse, while its inferred total mass is much larger than the light alone would suggest. The object is still a galaxy-scale system with observable globular clusters and diffuse emission. Its surrounding dark matter is part of the explanation for the measured gravity; it is not the definition of the word “galaxy.”

NASA quoted astronomer Dayi Li describing the discovery this way: “This is the first galaxy detected solely through its globular cluster population.” That statement highlights the unusual discovery route. The clusters acted as tracers of a system whose diffuse stellar light would otherwise be extremely difficult to recognize.

A very faint galaxy with little room for dark matter
NGC 1052-DF2 is an ultra-diffuse galaxy that demonstrates why “dark galaxy” is not a precise synonym for “dark-matter-rich galaxy.” NASA describes DF2 as nearly as wide as the Milky Way while containing only about one two-hundredth as many stars. A Hubble distance estimate placed it approximately 72 million light-years away.
Researchers measured the motions of DF2’s globular clusters and concluded that the stars could account for nearly all of the galaxy’s mass. That result leaves little room for an additional dark-matter component, in contrast with the preliminary dark-matter-dominated estimate for CDG-2.
What DF2 changes about the terminology
DF2 is extremely diffuse and faint, so it belongs in discussions of ultra-diffuse or dark galaxies based on its appearance. Yet its inferred dark-matter content is low. The example separates two questions that headlines often merge:
- How much light does the galaxy produce per unit area?
- How much total mass is required to explain the motions of its stars or clusters?
The first question determines whether an object is observationally faint. The second tests whether its mass is dominated by dark matter. A galaxy can be faint for reasons that do not imply a huge dark-matter fraction.
Best Value
Are dark galaxies made of dark matter?
Some appear to be, but the category is not defined that way. CDG-2 is a striking example: NASA’s preliminary estimate assigns about 99% of its mass to dark matter. DF2 is the cautionary counterexample: its measured globular-cluster motions allow the stars to account for nearly all of its mass, leaving little room for dark matter.
The correct answer depends on the individual object and on the quality of its mass measurement. A responsible description should say whether the dark-matter fraction is measured, modeled, preliminary or not yet established. “Dark galaxy” alone tells you that the visible system is unusually faint or diffuse; it does not supply a universal mass ratio.
Where a dark galaxy sits inside the halo picture
Think of the relationship as nested levels. The galaxy is the faint, galaxy-scale system that contains whatever stars, gas and clusters are observed. Around it is a gravitational halo inferred from motions or lensing. In a dark-matter-dominated case, most of the total mass belongs to that halo even though the galaxy’s visible component is tiny. In a dark-matter-deficient case such as DF2, the galaxy can still be diffuse while its measured mass is largely explained by visible stars.

How to read a headline about a “dark galaxy”
- Check what “dark” modifies. If the report discusses low surface brightness or diffuse light, it is describing visibility. If it discusses mass, it is making a separate dynamical claim.
- Look for the tracer. The evidence may come from stars, gas, globular clusters or lensing. A cluster-based detection, such as CDG-2, is not the same as a direct image of a stellar disk.
- Separate luminosity from mass. A low-light object can have a high dark-matter fraction, a low one, or an uncertain one.
- Find the date and instruments. Estimates can change as distances, velocities and models improve. CDG-2’s 99% figure is explicitly preliminary.
- Ask whether the statement concerns a halo or a galaxy. A halo is an extended surrounding mass distribution; a galaxy is the faint system being classified.
Bottom line
A dark-matter halo is the large, unseen gravitational structure around a galaxy, often extending many times farther than the luminous disk. A dark galaxy is an unusually faint or diffuse galaxy-scale system. The two can occur together, but they are not synonyms. CDG-2 illustrates a faint system with a preliminary estimate of roughly 99% dark matter, while NGC 1052-DF2 shows that an ultra-diffuse galaxy can contain little or no dark matter according to its measured motions. Always treat “dark galaxy” as an observational description and look to the dynamics or lensing for the object’s actual mass balance.
