Dark Link is the Water Temple’s mini-boss in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time—an evil reflection of Link that rises from Link’s reflection in the arena water. The fight is deliberately a confrontation with Link’s own movements: Dark Link copies his actions, blocks many ordinary attacks, and becomes more aggressive as his body changes from translucent to opaque.
Defeat him to open the room containing the Longshot. The most dependable counters documented for the encounter are the Megaton Hammer, Din’s Fire, Deku Nuts, Biggoron’s Sword, and carefully timed sword attacks. Navi’s instruction captures the encounter’s framing: “Conquer yourself!”

What Dark Link is in Ocarina of Time
Dark Link is an evil doppelgänger of Link and the Water Temple’s mini-boss. He is not introduced through a long conversation or a conventional villain monologue. Instead, he materializes from Link’s reflection in the water, turning the room itself into the entrance point for the battle.

Zelda Wiki describes him as enigmatic and generally without backstory or dialogue in this game. That distinction matters: the game clearly shows an evil reflection and a self-confrontation, but it does not provide a substantial spoken origin explaining exactly what Dark Link is made of or who created him.

Claims that he is literally composed of shadow magic, or that the room is formally a psychological test, are interpretations rather than confirmed Ocarina of Time exposition. The observable facts are his reflection-based arrival, his imitation of Link, and the way the encounter is presented as Link fighting a hostile version of himself.
Why Dark Link appears in the Water Temple
The Water Temple is the sixth dungeon in Ocarina of Time, and Dark Link is its mini-boss. The room’s water provides a visual and mechanical setup for the encounter: Link’s reflection becomes an opponent, and the fight turns familiar player inputs into something to defend against.
Navi’s “Conquer yourself!” message makes the intended framing unusually explicit. It does not establish a detailed biography for Dark Link; it tells you how to understand the challenge. Progress requires overcoming an opponent that resembles Link rather than simply exploiting a conventional monster’s elemental weakness.

How the Dark Link encounter behaves
He mirrors Link’s movement
Dark Link reacts to most of Link’s attacks and movements. This is why repeatedly swinging the sword without a plan can feel ineffective: the mini-boss often raises his guard or positions himself to avoid the same action Link just used.
He defends frequently
Normal sword play becomes a timing exercise. Dark Link can defend against attacks that would connect with a less reactive enemy, so the useful question is not “How fast can I swing?” but “Which attack can reach him before he answers it?”
He changes during the fight
At the beginning, Dark Link is nearly transparent. He becomes increasingly opaque as the encounter proceeds, and he attacks more actively once fully opaque. Treat that visual change as a warning to tighten your timing and stop assuming that the early rhythm will remain safe.

When struck, Dark Link can fall through the floor and reappear behind Link. Keep the camera and Link’s facing under control after every successful hit; a hit is not automatically a safe pause. The relocation is part of the fight’s pressure and can turn an unplanned follow-up into a back attack.

He can punish a sword thrust
A forward sword thrust is not universally safe. The documented behavior is that Dark Link can hop onto the blade, countering the thrust instead of taking a normal hit. Use thrusts only when you have deliberately created an opening and can recover from his response.

These figures describe published reference values, not a claim that every release, control scheme, or challenge setup behaves identically in every detail. No independent laboratory test or separate official Nintendo damage table for this encounter is identified.
What Dark Link is weak to
The clearest named counters are the Megaton Hammer and Din’s Fire. Both avoid some of the normal sword-duel behavior that makes the mini-boss difficult. The same reference also documents Deku Nuts, Biggoron’s Sword, shield-aware horizontal sword slashes, and carefully timed ordinary sword attacks as practical options.

The Megaton Hammer is useful because it does not ask you to win every exchange with a standard sword slash. Bring it out when Dark Link is defending or when you need an attack that changes the rhythm of the duel. You still have to account for his repositioning after a hit.

Din’s Fire
Din’s Fire is described as reliable when Dark Link is within range. Use it with enough space to avoid standing directly in the mini-boss’s immediate attack path, and do not assume that a cast removes the need to watch his position afterward.
Deku Nuts
Deku Nuts are another documented option. Their usefulness depends on timing and distance, so treat them as a deliberate opening tool rather than something to throw continuously. If a throw does not create a clear opportunity, return to positioning instead of wasting the next action.
Biggoron’s Sword
Biggoron’s Sword is listed among the practical counters. Its reach and damage profile can make the exchange feel different from the default blade, but the core rule remains: attack on an opening and be ready for Dark Link to move behind you.
Timed sword attacks
You can win with the ordinary sword by choosing attacks carefully. Horizontal slashes that account for your shield and deliberate timing are safer concepts than repeatedly using a thrust. No single universal best sword sequence is established for every release or challenge run.

A step-by-step strategy for beating Dark Link
- Enter without committing to an attack. Let the reflection sequence finish and watch where Dark Link appears. The opening seconds are for learning his distance, not emptying your inventory.
- Keep Link moving and facing the opponent. Because Dark Link can reappear behind you after a hit, avoid turning away immediately after connecting. Re-center before selecting your next action.
- Choose one counter and use it intentionally. The Megaton Hammer and Din’s Fire are the clearest alternatives to a standard sword duel. Deku Nuts and Biggoron’s Sword are additional documented choices.
- Do not rely on repeated thrusts. Dark Link can hop onto a thrusting blade. If you use the sword, favor a carefully timed slash or another attack that gives you room to react.
- Adjust when he becomes opaque. His increased opacity accompanies more active attacks. Slow down your inputs, preserve a defensive position, and stop treating an early opening as a permanent pattern.
- Recover after every exchange. His listed sword slash deals half a heart, and trading damage is especially costly when his health is tied to Link’s Heart Containers. Heal or reposition when your equipment and inventory allow it rather than forcing a risky extra swing.
- Confirm the progression change. Once Dark Link is defeated, leave the arena through the newly available route and enter the room containing the Longshot.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Spamming the sword: Dark Link reacts to most attacks and often blocks. Replace repeated swings with one attack followed by a positioning check.
- Using a thrust as a default opener: He can hop onto the blade. Reserve thrusts for a controlled opening, if you use them at all.
- Standing still after a hit: His fall-through-the-floor movement can put him behind Link. Turn, face him, and re-establish spacing.
- Ignoring the opacity change: A more opaque Dark Link is also more active. Increase caution as the visual transition progresses.
- Assuming the lore is fully explained: Ocarina of Time does not supply a substantial origin story. Separate what the battle shows from theories about shadow magic or symbolism.
- Expecting one tactic to fit every version: The documented counters are useful guidance, not a universal ranking for every release, controller layout, or challenge rule set.
Dark Link’s place in the story
In Ocarina of Time, Dark Link functions primarily as an encounter construct rather than a developed story character. He has no substantial dialogue or independently established history in the dungeon. His importance comes from what the room makes the player do: confront an enemy that mirrors Link’s own movement and attack vocabulary.
When comparing Dark Link with other Zelda doppelgängers, keep four questions separate:
- Where does the counterpart appear? Dark Link’s Ocarina of Time appearance is tied to the Water Temple.
- Is it a story character or an encounter construct? This version is presented mainly as a mini-boss encounter.
- How closely does it mirror Link? Dark Link reacts to Link’s movements, defends frequently, and imitates the duel at the input level.
- What origin does the game confirm? The game confirms the reflection-based materialization, but not a detailed literal explanation of his substance or creator.
This approach keeps observed mechanics separate from fan symbolism. The self-confrontation reading is strongly supported by Navi’s line, while more specific claims about psychology or shadow composition remain interpretation.
What happens after the fight
Defeating Dark Link is not the end of the Water Temple. It is the gate to the Longshot room, an important dungeon progression item. Continue through the temple toward Morpha, then finish the dungeon for the Heart Container and Water Medallion listed by Zelda Dungeon.

His reflection origin and Navi’s “Conquer yourself!” line give the battle its theme, while the Longshot room gives it a concrete dungeon reward.
