The connected Defenders-era series fit between Seasons 2 and 3. They are not all required for Matt Murdock’s plot, but The Defenders explains the bridge between his second and third seasons and gives important context for several returning characters.
Born Again is best understood as a continuation integrated into the current MCU timeline, not a clean reboot. The original Matt Murdock–Wilson Fisk conflict remains the foundation, while later appearances move both characters into a new phase of New York’s story.

The short version of Daredevil’s MCU timeline
Marvel’s street-level timeline has two useful ways to understand it: the chronological order of events and the practical order in which a viewer should watch the shows and films. For Daredevil, those orders are almost the same, with the Defenders crossover acting as the major dividing line.

- Daredevil Season 1
- Daredevil Season 2
- The Defenders
- Daredevil Season 3
- Spider-Man: No Way Home
- She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
- Echo
- Daredevil: Born Again
That is the minimum coherent route. A fuller route adds the other Defenders-era series around The Defenders, preserving the ensemble story and the personal histories of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Danny Rand and Frank Castle.

Where each Daredevil chapter sits in the MCU
Hulu’s chronological guide places the earliest Netflix-era stories in the period after I Am Groot Season 2 and before Avengers: Age of Ultron. The exact placement matters less than the order: Matt’s first season establishes Hell’s Kitchen before the street-level heroes become a team.
| Story | Position in the timeline | Why it matters for Daredevil |
|---|---|---|
| Daredevil Season 1 | After I Am Groot Season 2 and before Avengers: Age of Ultron, according to Hulu’s guide | Introduces Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk, Karen Page, Foggy Nelson and the Hell’s Kitchen conflict. |
| Daredevil Season 2 | After Ant-Man in Hulu’s sequence | Expands Matt’s conflict through Frank Castle and Elektra, setting up the crossover. |
| Luke Cage Season 1 and Iron Fist Season 1 | After Daredevil Season 2 and before The Defenders | Introduces the other heroes who join Matt in New York’s crossover team. |
| The Defenders | Between Daredevil Seasons 2 and 3 | Directly bridges Matt’s second and third solo seasons. |
| Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2 and Iron Fist Season 2 | Before Daredevil Season 3 in Hulu’s chronology | Continue the wider Defenders-era stories while Matt’s next chapter remains pending. |
| Daredevil Season 3 | After those Defenders-era seasons and before Thor: Ragnarok and The Punisher Season 2 in Hulu’s list | Completes the original solo-series arc before Matt’s later MCU appearances. |
| Spider-Man: No Way Home | Matt’s first major MCU re-entry after the original series | Reintroduces Matt Murdock in a film-level MCU setting. |
| She-Hulk: Attorney at Law | After No Way Home | Shows Matt functioning as both lawyer and masked hero in the wider MCU. |
| Echo | After She-Hulk | Continues the Kingpin side of the street-level story and leads toward Born Again. |
| Daredevil: Born Again | After those appearances; the main story is approximately 2026–2027 | Continues Matt and Fisk in a new political and legal conflict. |
The dates in the final row are approximate rather than an officially fixed year-by-year placement. GamesRadar’s chronology describes a 2025 prologue followed by the principal Born Again story around 2026–2027.
Why The Defenders belongs between Seasons 2 and 3
Daredevil Season 2 ends with Matt’s life and identity under extraordinary pressure. The Defenders is the crossover that follows those events and puts him alongside Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand. It is therefore the practical bridge between his second and third solo seasons, not an optional story that can be placed after Season 3 without disrupting continuity.

What the crossover adds
- Matt’s status: The crossover changes where Matt stands physically, emotionally and professionally before Season 3.
- Character relationships: It gives context to Matt’s interactions with the other Defenders and explains why their shared history matters later.
- New York’s street-level network: The series shows that Hell’s Kitchen is part of a larger set of neighborhood conflicts rather than an isolated corner of the MCU.
- Returning supporting characters: Several people connected to the Defenders-era shows carry histories that are easier to follow if the crossover is watched in place.
You can skip most of the surrounding series and still follow Matt’s central arc, but skipping The Defenders removes the connective tissue that Season 3 assumes the viewer understands.
What to watch before Daredevil: Born Again
There are two sensible choices. The minimum route follows Matt and Fisk as directly as possible. The complete route preserves the surrounding Defenders continuity.
| Watch-order option | Titles | Best for | What you give up or gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum coherent route | Daredevil Seasons 1–3; Spider-Man: No Way Home; She-Hulk: Attorney at Law; Echo; Daredevil: Born Again | Viewers who mainly want Matt Murdock’s story | Fastest path and clearest focus, but less background on the wider Defenders ensemble. |
| Complete Defenders route | Daredevil Season 1; Jessica Jones Season 1; Daredevil Season 2; Luke Cage Season 1; Iron Fist Season 1; The Defenders; The Punisher Season 1; Jessica Jones Season 2; Luke Cage Season 2; Iron Fist Season 2; Daredevil Season 3; then the later MCU appearances and Born Again | Viewers who want the ensemble’s full continuity | More character context and a stronger sense of the shared New York world, but substantially more viewing time. |
The complete sequence above follows the broad chronology supplied by Hulu’s guide and the recommended Defenders-era order. The Punisher is not required to understand Matt’s plot, but Frank Castle’s relationship with Matt is easier to appreciate when his own first season is included.

How Matt Murdock returns to the wider MCU
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the first major stop after the original solo run. Matt appears in his civilian professional role, making the re-entry significant even though the film is primarily a Spider-Man story. It confirms that the character can exist in the larger Marvel Studios continuity without discarding the legal and neighborhood scale that defined his series.

She-Hulk expands that idea by showing Matt in both halves of his life: attorney and vigilante. The appearance is lighter in tone than the original series, but it preserves the essential dual identity and demonstrates how a street-level hero can interact with a different corner of the MCU.
Echo
Echo is especially important for the Kingpin connection. Its story continues Wilson Fisk’s post-crime-boss trajectory and places him closer to the political power he holds in Born Again. GamesRadar identifies the order as No Way Home, then She-Hulk, then Echo, followed by Born Again.

Is Born Again Season 4?
Officially, Daredevil: Born Again is a new series title rather than a show marketed simply as Daredevil Season 4. Creatively, however, it continues the earlier story. Disney describes it as a continuation of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s story, with Karen Page, Foggy Nelson and Frank Castle returning.
That makes “season 4 in all but name” a useful shorthand, but not a formal numbering decision. GamesRadar reported Vincent D’Onofrio describing it in essentially those terms and noted Charlie Cox’s estimate that the story begins roughly six years after Season 3. The safest description is therefore: a continuation with a new title, integrated into the current MCU calendar.

- Matt and Fisk’s rivalry: Their relationship remains the dramatic foundation rather than being reset for a new origin story.
- The supporting cast: Karen, Foggy and Frank’s returns connect the new series to the earlier run.
- The time jump: Cox’s estimate points to a substantial gap after Season 3, so the characters are not simply resuming the next day.
- The MCU setting: Matt’s film and television appearances between the old series and Born Again are part of the path into the new show.
Kingpin’s move from crime boss to mayor
Wilson Fisk is the connective thread across Daredevil’s eras. In the original series he is a criminal power broker whose conflict with Matt is personal, ideological and rooted in control of New York neighborhoods. In Born Again Season 2, Disney’s March 23, 2026 feature describes Fisk as the newly elected mayor of New York City who has outlawed vigilantism.

That policy changes the stakes. Matt is no longer simply fighting a criminal organization outside the law; he is operating against an official anti-vigilante campaign backed by the city’s political authority. The conflict now combines courtroom strategy, public legitimacy and direct action in the streets.
Executive producer Sana Amanat summarized the creative logic by saying, “Every great Daredevil story is ultimately a great Kingpin story.” The political escalation follows that principle: Fisk’s power grows from private influence to public office, while Matt must decide how to defend people when the government itself treats masked heroes as criminals.
What Born Again’s creative team says about the continuation
Marvel Studios television executive Brad Winderbaum said he approached the project “as a fan” and as something he would want to see. That perspective helps explain why the series retains recognizable characters and relationships instead of treating the earlier run as disposable background.
Showrunner Dario Scardapane described the central dramatic pressure this way: “Each character comes to a point where they have to make a decision and they have to choose a side — and each one of them, in making that decision, has to pay a price.” In practical terms, that points to a story about competing loyalties rather than a simple hero-versus-villain rematch.
A practical viewing plan
If you have never watched any Defenders-era series
- Start with Daredevil Season 1 to learn Matt, Fisk, Karen and Foggy.
- Watch Daredevil Season 2 for Frank Castle, Elektra and the immediate setup for the crossover.
- Watch The Defenders before moving to Season 3.
- Finish Daredevil Season 3, which closes the original solo arc.
- Watch Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Echo in that order.
- Begin Daredevil: Born Again.
If you want every major connection
Use the complete Defenders route in the table, adding Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher around the crossover. This is worthwhile when the appeal is the shared street-level universe itself, not only Matt’s personal story. The extra shows explain how the other heroes’ histories intersect and why The Defenders feels like a culmination rather than an isolated team-up.
Common timeline pitfalls
- Putting The Defenders after Season 3: This reverses the bridge between Matt’s second and third seasons.
- Calling Born Again a total reboot: The official description and returning cast point to continuation, even though the title and production structure are new.
- Assuming a precise year for every event: The approximate 2026–2027 placement for Born Again is useful, but it is not a complete official date map.
- Believing every crossover show is mandatory: The minimum route is enough for Matt’s central narrative; the complete route is for viewers who want the ensemble context.
- Skipping the MCU re-entry appearances: No Way Home, She-Hulk and Echo explain how Matt and Fisk move from the earlier series into the current MCU phase.
The timeline in one sentence
Matt Murdock’s story begins in the original Daredevil run, passes through The Defenders between Seasons 2 and 3, returns through No Way Home, She-Hulk and Echo, and continues in Born Again as Wilson Fisk transforms from an underworld kingpin into New York’s mayor.
