Newcastle Knights centre Dane Gagai has been cleared to change his international eligibility from Australia to New Zealand, making him available for Kiwis selection. The ruling does not mean he has been selected. The International Rugby League (IRL) Appeals Committee approved his appeal on special-circumstances grounds, according to NRL.com and AAP.
What changed in Gagai’s eligibility?
The IRL Appeals Committee approved Gagai’s switch of Tier 1 eligibility from Australia to New Zealand. That clears him to represent the Kiwis if selected; the selection decision belongs to New Zealand. The ruling is specific to his appeal and does not establish a general change to Tier 1 eligibility rules.

Why was he allowed to change teams?
Gagai qualifies for New Zealand through his mother, Tania, and has represented his Ngāti Pikiāo heritage with the Māori All Stars since 2019. He also has a substantial history with Australia: he played seven Tests for the Kangaroos, was part of their 2017 Rugby League World Cup-winning side, and last represented Australia in 2018. NRL.com reported in 2026 that he was 35 and had made 23 State of Origin appearances for Queensland.

Gagai’s first application was rejected under that restriction. The appeals committee then considered that rule changes had created opportunities for some other players to play State of Origin while representing their heritage internationally, an opportunity Gagai had not had in the same way. IRL chair Troy Grant said the committee did not want Gagai disadvantaged by the changes, given that he had not played for Australia for eight years. The IRL described his case as involving “special circumstances.”

Has New Zealand selected Gagai?
No selection is confirmed by the eligibility ruling. Grant said Gagai was now available for New Zealand selection and that it was up to the Kiwis whether to pick him. His potential inclusion in a squad should therefore be treated as undecided unless New Zealand announces it.

NRL.com reported that Gagai’s first possible assignment could be the Australia–New Zealand opener at the Rugby League World Cup on 15 October 2026 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. That possibility depends on his selection and should not be read as confirmation that he will play, or that he will personally face any particular opponent.
