The gathering also highlighted the developing partnership between Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) and Crestlink, whose proposed logistics hub remains a future infrastructure project—not an operating facility.
Why families returned to Umbagaramba / Balanyoo
DAC reported that the gathering took place on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. It was a cultural and family event centred on Country, connection and the opportunity for younger generations to know the islands. The National Indigenous Times reported on the gathering the following day. DAC’s account and the National Indigenous Times report describe the event; it was not a resettlement.

DAC Chair Gary Umbagai described the importance of returning as a matter of intergenerational connection: “For us, getting back on Country is what is important. Our old people were connected to these islands and looked after Country, and we want our younger ones and our families to have that same connection.” DAC’s account

How DAC describes the islands’ cultural connection
DAC identifies Cockatoo Island as part of Oomeday country. In its account, Umbagaramba / Balanyoo is culturally connected with Godanoo (Koolan), Wanganiyn (Irvine) and Garaan-ngaddim (Horizontal Falls) through the Woongudd story. These names and relationships are presented here as DAC describes them. DAC’s account of Country
What the 2024 agreement establishes
DAC says it and Crestlink executed an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) in 2024, establishing a framework for working together. DAC also says Crestlink’s 2026 involvement in the future of Koolan Island broadened opportunities for DAC to participate in decisions and opportunities across both islands. The agreement is the formal basis for the partnership; it does not, by itself, establish that the proposed Cockatoo Island hub has been built or is operating. Doolin also said Crestlink’s commitment is to work cooperatively with Traditional Owners and give Dambeemangaddee people a meaningful role in the island’s future. These are Crestlink’s stated commitments; the agreement’s practical outcomes will depend on how the relationship and decisions develop. DAC’s account

What Crestlink reports about the proposed logistics hub
Crestlink describes an intended integrated aviation and marine logistics capability for offshore energy, government and defence-related operations. That is the company’s plan, not evidence of services already being delivered. Its project page says Cockatoo Island has an existing 1,060-metre CASA-compliant aerodrome and is held under Crown Lease tenure. The length and compliance description are Crestlink’s statements, not an independently verified measurement in the available material. - Wholesome, Clean Feeding: Made without artificial or chemical additives; simply serve the desired amount daily and provide fresh, clean water to keep your bird nourished and thriving
Crestlink’s milestone list reports final environmental approval in December 2025 and Crown Lease execution in January 2026. The company describes these as part of a pathway for future aerodrome, port and supporting infrastructure development. The reported approvals and lease progress indicate a route toward possible development; they do not show that construction is complete or identify when a hub would begin operating. How Traditional Owner priorities frame the proposal
DAC’s Healthy Country Plan 2023–2032 sets priorities for DAC and Dambimangari Rangers. DAC asks its partners to recognise and support the plan, making it a relevant Traditional Owner-led frame for considering how any future project works on Country. Project claims about participation or benefits should be assessed against what happens in practice, including how DAC’s priorities inform decisions. DAC’s Healthy Country Plan

What remains unclear about the hub
The available project information does not provide a detailed construction schedule, a complete project scope or a specific next milestone. It establishes Crestlink’s reported approvals, tenure and development pathway, alongside a proposed logistics capability. The family gathering and the infrastructure proposal are related through the developing DAC–Crestlink partnership, but they are distinct: one has taken place as a cultural event, while the other remains planned.
