The partners established the Quantum Supply Chain Initiative Support Fund for proposed research and education; the announcement reports no completed projects or measured results.
What the D-Wave–University of Arkansas partnership is
The collaboration brings D-Wave together with SCMRC, which is part of the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas. D-Wave also joined SCMRC’s partnership program. The university said the program had more than 25 industry partners when the collaboration was announced.

The new support fund is intended to advance thought leadership, education, and independent research into quantum-computing applications for supply chains in retail, transportation, and national defense. The partners announced the initiative during CSCMP EDGE 2026, a conference hosted by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
D-Wave’s announcement and the University of Arkansas announcement describe the collaboration’s goals, not a finished technology or operational deployment.

Which supply-chain problems the initiative may study
The announcement identifies five areas for potential quantum-optimization research:
- Transportation routing: choosing routes across a network while balancing cost, speed, and service needs.
- Logistics network design: considering how facilities and connections should be organized to move goods.
- Inventory and resource allocation: deciding where inventory and other limited resources should go.
- Scheduling: coordinating activities, timing, and resources.
- Decision-making under disruption: exploring how plans might account for changing conditions and interruptions.
These are proposed research topics, not applications the partners say are already in production. Supply-chain decisions can involve many interacting constraints, such as cost, delivery speed, service, and resilience. The announcement frames those trade-offs as areas to investigate; it does not show that quantum methods have outperformed classical approaches on them.

Education and industry engagement are also part of the plan
The collaboration may include curriculum and case development, student learning opportunities, and engagement with industry, government, and academic stakeholders. The partners also say they intend to share practical frameworks and insights. The announcement does not name specific courses, faculty or student participants, research projects, milestones, or delivery dates.
Has the partnership produced results?
Not in the results reported in the October 5, 2026 announcements. They establish a collaboration and support fund and outline areas for future work, but do not report a completed application, benchmark against classical solvers, quantified savings, service-level gains, or production deployment. They also do not state the fund’s amount.
D-Wave describes itself in its release as a dual-platform quantum-computing company offering annealing and gate-model systems, software, and services. That is the company’s description, not an independent evaluation of its technology or evidence of performance in the proposed supply-chain use cases.

A useful evaluation would compare a quantum or hybrid method with an appropriate classical baseline on the same problem instance. Relevant measures could include solution quality, runtime, total operating cost, how well each method handles constraints, resilience under disruption, and deployment requirements. These are evaluation criteria for future results, not findings reported by this initiative.
