1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShort answer: Cyrus’s Classic STREAM and Stream-XR are BluOS network streamers. Cyrus lists Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer, Spotify, Roon and AirPlay 2 support, while the Classic STREAM specification covers common lossless and compressed formats up to 192 kHz/24-bit. AirPlay 2 can synchronize Cyrus players or send different music to separate rooms, and BluOS can share network, cloud and internet-radio sources with other BluOS devices.
Long-term ownership has two separate parts. BluOS software is maintained and developed by a third party, but Cyrus does not promise a fixed number of update years. Cyrus publishes firmware packages and says it can service many products more than 40 years old, subject to parts and market availability. A July 2025 supported-models document listed Classic STREAM as fully supported and Stream-XR as a model where repair may be possible in some markets.

What the Cyrus Classic STREAM and Stream-XR are
The Classic STREAM and Stream-XR are network music players rather than standalone “internet radios.” They connect to a home network over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, obtain music from streaming services or local sources, and feed an amplifier, powered speakers or another digital component through their outputs.

Both models sit in Cyrus’s BluOS family. The Classic STREAM product information identifies BluOS as the operating platform and lists major subscription services, Roon and AirPlay 2. The Stream-XR page repeats that service support and adds two front-panel presets. Because service catalogs and firmware change, those lists describe what Cyrus listed on the checked product pages; they should not be read as a permanent promise that every service will remain available indefinitely.

Which streaming services are supported?
Services listed by Cyrus
Cyrus lists the following services for the Classic STREAM and Stream-XR:
| Service or platform | How Cyrus describes it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Tidal | Available through the streamer’s app and BluOS environment | Catalog and account requirements are controlled by Tidal and can change. |
| Qobuz | Available through the app; also identified as a source that Roon can bring together | Catalog, subscription tier and regional availability are controlled by Qobuz. |
| Deezer | Listed as a supported service | Availability depends on Deezer’s current service and region. |
| Spotify | Listed as a supported service | Spotify account features and connection methods can change. |
| Roon | Supported as a library and service layer | Roon is a separate platform with its own account and software requirements. |
| AirPlay 2 | Supported for sending audio from compatible Apple devices and for multiroom playback | AirPlay control depends on the Apple device, network and current Apple software. |
Cyrus also refers to “many other services” in its product information. That wording is deliberately broader than a fixed catalog. If one particular service is essential to your purchase, check its current listing in the Cyrus/BluOS app and confirm regional availability before buying.
Which devices can control the streamer?
Cyrus says its app is available for iOS, Android, Kindle, Mac and PC. That gives you a choice of phone, tablet or computer control rather than requiring a dedicated Cyrus remote. The app is the practical place to browse supported services, select rooms and manage network playback. Exact screens and menu names can change with BluOS app releases.

What Roon adds
Roon is presented as a way to combine sources instead of merely another single-service shortcut. Cyrus says Roon can bring together music from internal or external drives, a NAS, iTunes libraries, internet radio, Tidal and Qobuz. That is useful when your collection spans local files and subscriptions: the Roon interface can present them in one library, while the Cyrus streamer acts as a playback endpoint.

Can Cyrus streamers play FLAC and high-resolution files?
Classic STREAM format support
The Classic STREAM specification lists these formats:
| Format | Listed by Cyrus? |
|---|---|
| MP3 | Yes |
| AAC | Yes |
| WMA | Yes |
| WMA-L | Yes |
| OGG | Yes |
| ALAC | Yes |
| OPUS | Yes |
| FLAC | Yes |
| MQA | Yes |
| WAV | Yes |
| AIFF | Yes |
| MPEG-4 SLS | Yes |
Cyrus rates the Classic STREAM for files up to 192 kHz/24-bit. That directly answers the common FLAC question: FLAC is listed, and the published ceiling reaches high-resolution PCM files at 192 kHz and 24-bit. The specification does not establish that every service, input or file container will deliver that maximum; actual playback also depends on the source, account tier, network and the file itself.
MQA appears in the format list, but a format listing alone does not describe every decoding or rendering behavior in a particular software version. Treat it as documented compatibility rather than as a promise about a specific streaming catalog or future service policy.
What is stated for Stream-XR?
The Stream-XR information summarized by Cyrus repeats the major service list, but the material does not provide a separate Stream-XR format-and-resolution table. Do not assume that every Classic STREAM format limit automatically applies to Stream-XR without checking the current Stream-XR specification.

Inputs, outputs and network connections
The Classic STREAM specification lists the following physical connections and network interfaces:
- Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet
- Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands
- Optical digital output
- Coaxial digital output
- Analogue line output
- USB
- Cyrus MC-BUS
Ethernet is the most predictable choice for a fixed system or a room with difficult wireless coverage. Wi-Fi 5 allows wireless installation on either listed band, but the quality of playback still depends on signal strength, interference and the capacity of the home network. Optical and coaxial outputs let you use an external digital-to-analogue converter or a digital input on an amplifier; the analogue line output allows a direct connection to an analogue amplifier or powered speaker system. The specification lists USB, but the supplied information does not define every supported USB device, file-system behavior or input mode, so check the current manual for a specific drive or accessory.
How multiroom works
AirPlay 2 rooms
Cyrus describes AirPlay 2 as allowing multiple players to communicate, play in perfect sync from room to room, or play different songs in different rooms under iOS control. In practice, this is the Apple-controlled path: compatible iPhone, iPad or other Apple source selects one or more AirPlay 2 targets, and the operating system manages grouping.
- Use AirPlay 2 when your household already controls music from Apple devices.
- Choose several Cyrus players for synchronized playback across rooms.
- Select individual players when each room should play a different song.
- Keep the players and the controlling Apple device on the same reachable home network.
BluOS rooms
The Stream-XR specification describes BluOS as multiroom software that can stream lossless music to every room, find music on a home network, cloud service or internet radio, and share those sources with BluOS-enabled devices. This is a broader system-level arrangement than simply sending audio from one phone: the BluOS players discover one another and expose compatible sources across the BluOS network.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a multiroom installation, decide which ecosystem you intend to use. AirPlay 2 is convenient when iOS is the main controller and you want Apple-wide grouping. BluOS is the relevant path when you want Cyrus players to share network libraries, cloud services and internet radio with other BluOS-enabled equipment. The two approaches can coexist, but they are separate control layers; a room group created in one is not automatically the same group created in the other.
Setting up a Cyrus streamer
- Plan the network connection. Place the player within reach of a wired Ethernet run or a stable 2.4 GHz/5 GHz Wi-Fi signal. Use Ethernet where you want the least wireless variability.
- Connect the audio path. Use the optical or coaxial digital output for an external DAC or digital amplifier, or use the analogue line output for an analogue system. Power the player and connected equipment before starting playback.
- Install the control app. Cyrus lists versions for iOS, Android, Kindle, Mac and PC. Install the current version appropriate to your device.
- Join the player to the network. Follow the app’s current setup prompts to select the home network and complete discovery. If the player is not found, confirm that the phone or computer and streamer are on the same local network rather than a guest network that blocks device discovery.
- Sign in to services. Add the services you use, such as Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer or Spotify, and authenticate with each provider. Service sign-in is separate from the Cyrus hardware account, if one is requested by the current app.
- Add local sources when needed. For a NAS, computer library or external drive, use the BluOS or Roon workflow appropriate to that source. Roon can combine internal or external drives, NAS, iTunes libraries, internet radio, Tidal and Qobuz in one library view.
- Configure rooms. Use AirPlay 2 from an iOS device for Apple-managed groups, or use BluOS grouping for BluOS sources and players. Test one room first, then add rooms so a network problem is easier to isolate.
Long-term BluOS software support
What Cyrus actually promises
Cyrus states: “The ongoing development and support for BluOS is secured by a third party, providing a guarantee that the BluOS software will be maintained and developed well into the future, should new streaming options become available.” This is a commitment to continuing third-party maintenance and development, not a published number of guaranteed update years. Cyrus does not state a fixed end date or minimum support period for every streamer.
That distinction matters because streaming services, authentication systems and mobile operating systems evolve independently. A player can remain physically functional while a service changes its requirements. BluOS’s third-party maintenance improves the prospect of compatibility, but it cannot guarantee that every future service, codec or operating-system feature will be supported on every older model.

Cyrus’s XR support page publishes firmware packages and change logs. The page lists firmware version 2.5 for i7, i9 and Pre-XR products and provides update instructions plus a support email. Firmware numbers are time-sensitive: version 2.5 is a snapshot of that support page, not a claim that it remains the newest release. Before updating, read the current change log, use the package for the exact model and follow Cyrus’s instructions without interrupting power or network connectivity.

Hardware repairs and service life
More than 40 years is a capability, not a guarantee
Cyrus says it can service most products it has manufactured, “some of which may have left the factory more than 40 years ago.” The important qualification is parts availability. A long-lived service history does not mean every component, display, board or transport remains obtainable, and service options can differ by model and market.
Published UK service information
Cyrus lists fixed-fee UK servicing of £330 for supported XR, Classic and ONE models. The amount is tied to that published UK service offering and should not be treated as a worldwide price or a permanent tariff. International customers are directed to local retailers or distributors, where labor, shipping, taxes and parts handling can differ.
Model status in the July 2025 support document
| Model | Status shown in July 2025 document | Meaning of the status key |
|---|---|---|
| Classic STREAM | Green | Fully supported. |
| Stream-XR | Yellow | Repair may be possible in some markets; parts status is less certain. |
The color coding is a point-in-time status report. Confirm the current model status, parts situation and regional service route before committing to a used unit or planning a repair.
Classic STREAM versus Stream-XR
The following comparison stays within what Cyrus has published in the supplied product and support information. “Not stated” means the cited material does not establish a comparable specification.
| Decision point | Classic STREAM | Stream-XR |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming services | Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer, Spotify, Roon, AirPlay 2 and other services listed by Cyrus | Same major service list repeated by Cyrus; catalog availability can change |
| Front-panel controls | Not stated in the cited material | Two front-panel presets are listed |
| File formats and maximum resolution | MP3, AAC, WMA, WMA-L, OGG, ALAC, OPUS, FLAC, MQA, WAV, AIFF and MPEG-4 SLS; up to 192 kHz/24-bit | Not stated in the cited Stream-XR material |
| Multiroom | AirPlay 2 and BluOS behavior described by Cyrus | BluOS multiroom description and AirPlay 2 support listed by Cyrus |
| DAC and digital-input provision | Not stated in the cited material; outputs include optical, coaxial and analogue line | Not stated in the cited material |
| PSU-XR upgrade compatibility | Not stated | Not stated; verify compatibility for the exact model and revision |
| Firmware and service status | Green, fully supported, in the July 2025 document | Yellow; repair may be possible in some markets and parts are less certain |
| Current US price and availability | Not stated | Not stated |
The practical choice is therefore straightforward: choose the Classic STREAM when its documented format list and fully supported July 2025 status matter most; investigate the Stream-XR when its front-panel presets or XR ecosystem are important, but confirm current regional repair and parts support first.
Troubleshooting the common ownership problems
The player is not discovered
- Check that the streamer has power and that the Ethernet cable is seated, or that Wi-Fi setup completed on the intended 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network.
- Move the controlling phone or computer off a guest network if that network isolates devices.
- Temporarily test Ethernet if Wi-Fi discovery remains unreliable. A successful wired test separates a network-coverage problem from an account or app problem.
A service is missing
- Confirm that you are using the current Cyrus/BluOS app and that the service is available in your country.
- Sign out and back in to the service account if authentication has expired.
- Remember that Cyrus’s list reflects the services identified on its product pages; providers can change catalogs, plans or integration requirements.
Multiroom playback is out of sync
- Check whether the group was created with AirPlay 2 or BluOS and control it from that same ecosystem.
- Improve weak Wi-Fi links or connect fixed players by Ethernet.
- Remove one room at a time to identify a player or network segment causing the problem.
An update fails
- Verify the firmware package matches the exact model.
- Use Cyrus’s current instructions and change log rather than an old downloaded package.
- Do not interrupt power during the update. If the player does not recover, use the support route supplied on Cyrus’s current XR support page.
Bottom line
Cyrus streamers cover the main services and file types most buyers expect, with the Classic STREAM’s published ceiling of 192 kHz/24-bit and clear AirPlay 2/BluOS multiroom options. The strongest long-term evidence is Cyrus’s continuing firmware publication, third-party BluOS maintenance and willingness to service many older products. The limits are equally clear: no fixed software-support term, changing service catalogs, parts-dependent repairs and less-certain Stream-XR status in some markets. Check the current app, firmware page and regional service listing for the exact model before purchase.
