Cyrus 40 ST vs Naim, Cambridge Audio and Bluesound: Which Music Streamer Sounds Best?

Short answer: If sound quality is your primary criterion, the Cyrus 40 ST is the strongest choice in the current independent evidence. What Hi-Fi’s 2026 roundup describes it as expressive and punchy with excellent rhythmic drive, and gives it a third consecutive award. That is a reviewer judgment, not a laboratory ranking: your DAC, amplifier, speakers, room, source quality and system matching can change the result.

The alternatives have clearer specialisms. Naim’s ND555 is the premium reference route for buyers already invested in a high-end Naim system. Cambridge Audio’s EXN100 combines balanced, spacious sound with unusually broad digital-format support, HDMI eARC, Bluetooth and balanced XLR outputs. Bluesound’s NODE is the convenience leader when BluOS multi-room, TV integration, AirPlay 2 and headphone listening matter as much as ultimate refinement.

What the current evidence actually establishes

There is no controlled listening statistic that ranks Cyrus, Naim, Cambridge Audio and Bluesound under identical conditions. The available evidence consists of independent listening reviews plus manufacturer specifications. That makes the answer useful but conditional: Cyrus currently has the strongest published sound-quality verdict, while the other three may be better fits for particular systems or priorities.

The Cyrus 40 ST’s award is significant because it has retained What Hi-Fi’s top streamer recognition for three years. The review language is specific: “expressive, punchy sound with excellent rhythmic drive.” Cyrus’s own product description says the 40 ST delivers bit-perfect high-resolution playback without configuration and supports lossless audio up to 24-bit/192kHz.

  • Unrivaled Sound Quality - Diverging from the norm of resampling to set sample rate and bit depth, WiiM Mini stands out by delivering unaltered audio up to 192kHz, 24-bit via its digital and analog outputs. That's the same as an artist's recording in the studio. Enjoy gapless playback with seamless track transitions. Note that not all services offer 24-bit/192 kHz content; Amazon Music Ultra HD, Qobuz(Works with Qobuz through WiiM Home app. Currently does not support Qobuz connect.), and personal libraries support it. Additionally, TIDAL Master supports up to 24-bit/96kHz.
  • Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Amazon Music Cast - Stream music directly from Spotify, TIDAL or Amazon Music app using Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect or Alexa Cast. This offers superior audio quality and extended range compared to traditional Bluetooth or AirPlay 2 receivers, freeing your mobile device for other activities. Effortlessly form groups with other AirPlay 2 or Alexa devices like Echo and HomePod, or connect multiple WiiM devices for synchronized playback across various audio devices simultaneously.

Naim occupies a different position. Naim identifies the ND555 as its reference streamer, and its support documentation covers broad resolution and format support. What Hi-Fi’s Cyrus review used the ND555 with its 555 PS DR power supply as a reference, which places Naim in the comparison as a premium benchmark rather than a value alternative.

Cambridge Audio’s EXN100 is the most broadly equipped of the four on the published specifications. What Hi-Fi reports clear, spacious and balanced sound, deep and agile bass, and stable imaging. Cambridge lists HDMI eARC, Bluetooth, balanced XLR outputs, PCM support to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD512.

Bluesound’s NODE is aimed at a different kind of buyer. Bluesound lists HDMI eARC, Dolby Digital decoding, AirPlay 2, a headphone output and wireless multi-room integration. What Hi-Fi describes its premium NODE as one of the current best choices and the best-sounding model in that range. Its advantage is the combination of engaging sound and a mature ecosystem rather than a claim to beat every dedicated high-end streamer.

Naim ND555 Reference product; the cited material does not provide a directly comparable adjective set Broad resolution and format support documented by Naim; designed to be used with the 555 PS DR power supply in the reference configuration Owners of an established Naim system and buyers pursuing a premium reference path Premium reference tier
Cambridge Audio EXN100 Clear, spacious and balanced, with deep, agile bass and stable imaging HDMI eARC, Bluetooth, balanced XLR outputs, up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512 Systems needing TV connectivity, balanced analogue output and broad hi-res support Feature-rich mid/high tier

The table compares what is documented, not what is absent. A feature marked nowhere in the cited material should not be treated as proof that a product lacks it; verify the exact model and current firmware before buying.

Cyrus 40 ST: the sound-quality front-runner

What it sounds like

The 40 ST’s defining character is rhythmic communication. “Expressive” suggests it preserves changes in phrasing and dynamics; “punchy” points to decisive attacks; “excellent rhythmic drive” means bass lines and percussion are presented with a strong sense of momentum. This profile can make acoustic music feel animated and complex mixes easier to follow.

Those words are not a promise that every system will sound brighter, faster or more detailed. A lively loudspeaker, a lean amplifier or a reflective room can already emphasise attack. In such a system, the Cyrus may be thrilling or may become too forward. With relaxed speakers or an amplifier that sounds slightly soft, the same rhythmic emphasis can restore energy.

Ease of setup

Cyrus says the 40 ST makes bit-perfect high-resolution audio simple because it requires no configuration. That is valuable when you want the streamer to deliver the source data without asking you to choose resampling or complex digital settings. “No configuration” does not remove the need to set up your network, sign in to services or select the correct input on your amplifier; it refers to the bit-perfect playback path.

The WiiM Pro Plus is also compatible with Google and Siri Voice Assistants, allowing you to control your device using voice commands through your phone, HomePod, or Google Home.

Resolution limits in context

The documented lossless ceiling is 24-bit/192kHz. That covers the resolution used by a large proportion of high-resolution music catalogues. A higher number on another product is not automatically audible. Mastering quality, recording choices, the digital-to-analogue stage and the rest of the playback chain generally matter more than whether a file is 192kHz or a still higher rate.

Who should choose it

  • Choose the 40 ST when you want a dedicated component and the published sound-quality verdict carries more weight than having every connection.
  • It is a particularly logical match for a system that sounds polite, slow or dynamically restrained and would benefit from more rhythmic urgency.
  • Before purchase, confirm that the current BluOS service list and control options cover the services you use in your country.

Naim ND555: the premium reference route

Why Naim appears in this comparison

Naim’s own support material identifies the ND555 as its reference streamer. That status matters more than a list of headline sample rates: it signals that the product is intended as the company’s highest-performance streaming platform and as a partner for a serious Naim system.

The cited Cyrus review used the ND555 and its 555 PS DR power supply as a reference. This does not prove that Cyrus beats Naim in every system. It shows that the ND555 is the level against which a high-end dedicated streamer can be judged in a specialist listening test.

Who benefits from the premium approach

The ND555 makes most sense when the rest of the system is already capable of revealing small differences and when you value a coherent Naim component chain. In a modest amplifier-and-speaker package, spending at reference-streamer level may produce less audible improvement than upgrading speakers, room treatment or the amplifier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Naim’s broad documented format support removes concerns about compatibility with common high-resolution files, but format support alone does not establish superior sound. Treat the ND555 as the option to audition when budget and system integration matter more than value per feature.

Cambridge Audio EXN100: balanced sound and extensive connectivity

Sound character

What Hi-Fi describes the EXN100 as clear, spacious and balanced straight out of the box. Deep, agile bass and stable imaging add useful detail to that description: the presentation aims for scale and control without pushing one obvious tonal colour.

This balance can be an advantage in a mixed-use system. If your speakers are already energetic, a neutral and spacious source is less likely to make the presentation tiring. If your system is warm, the EXN100’s clarity can improve separation without relying on exaggerated treble.

Enjoy gapless playback and superior sound quality. Personalize your audio with advanced room correction and independent EQ settings tailored to your space.

Connections that distinguish it

The EXN100 has HDMI eARC for a television, Bluetooth for compatible wireless sources and balanced XLR outputs for an amplifier that accepts them. XLR does not automatically sound better than unbalanced RCA; its practical benefit is the ability to use a balanced signal path where the amplifier and cable run support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its published digital support reaches 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512. Those are manufacturer or reviewer specifications, not evidence that it sounds better than a 24-bit/192kHz streamer. They do provide headroom for unusually high-resolution files and for owners who want one network source to handle almost any format.

Who should choose it

  • Choose the EXN100 when a TV, balanced analogue connection and broad format support are all important.
  • It is the most convincing all-rounder for a system that serves music and television rather than a single dedicated listening room.
  • Its balanced, spacious presentation suits buyers who want refinement without the more explicitly rhythmic emphasis reported for the Cyrus.

Bluesound NODE: the ecosystem and convenience choice

What you gain beyond sound

The NODE’s strongest case is the number of everyday jobs it handles. HDMI eARC lets a television use the same audio system; Dolby Digital decoding supports compatible TV sources; AirPlay 2 covers Apple-device streaming; and a headphone output allows private listening without another box. Wireless multi-room integration through BluOS adds rooms and zones without running analogue cables between them.

These features can outweigh a small difference in audiophile presentation. A streamer that family members can operate reliably, that wakes with the TV and that serves several rooms may deliver more real-world listening than a technically superior component that is difficult to use.

Sound in its class

What Hi-Fi calls the premium NODE the best-sounding model in its range. That is a range-level judgment, not a claim that it outperforms the Cyrus 40 ST or Naim ND555 in every system. Its sound is described as engaging, making it a sensible choice when you want musical involvement together with BluOS convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should choose it

  • Choose the NODE when multi-room playback, headphones, TV integration or AirPlay 2 is central to the purchase.
  • It is attractive for a first network streamer because the feature set does not require a separate TV interface, headphone amplifier or multi-room controller.
  • Check the current BluOS catalogue and regional service availability before ordering; service support can change by country and firmware version.

Which one sounds best in a real system?

For a pure sound-quality shortlist, start with the Cyrus 40 ST, then audition the Naim ND555 if your system and budget justify a reference component. The Cambridge EXN100 is the safer choice when you need a balanced presentation and extensive connections. The Bluesound NODE is the strongest practical choice when the ecosystem is part of the definition of “best.”

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Maximum musical expression from a dedicated streamer Cyrus 40 ST The current independent verdict emphasises expression, punch and rhythmic drive.
A premium reference within a high-end Naim chain Naim ND555 Naim identifies it as the reference streamer, and it was used as a reference against the Cyrus.
Balanced sound plus TV and balanced analogue connectivity Cambridge Audio EXN100 It combines the documented spacious, balanced presentation with HDMI eARC, XLR and extensive hi-res support.
Multi-room, headphones, AirPlay 2 and simple TV use Bluesound NODE Its feature set and BluOS integration solve more everyday-use cases than a minimalist dedicated streamer.

How to match a streamer to your system

1. Identify the conversion and output path

Determine whether the streamer will feed your amplifier through its own analogue output, an external DAC or a digital input. The audible result depends on the complete path. If you use an external DAC, differences between the streamers’ internal analogue stages may be reduced, while timing, noise performance and software stability remain relevant.

The WiiM Pro Plus is also compatible with Google and Siri Voice Assistants, allowing you to control your device using voice commands through your phone, HomePod, or Google Home.

2. Assess the amplifier and speakers

Listen for the system’s existing tendency. Bright or forward speakers may favour the EXN100’s reported balance or a carefully matched Naim setup. Warm or relaxed speakers may benefit from the Cyrus’s reported punch. The NODE can be the best answer if the system’s usability is currently the limiting factor.

3. Consider the room

A reflective room can exaggerate treble energy and make any lively source seem aggressive. A heavily damped room can make a restrained source feel dull. Do not make a streamer decision from adjectives alone without considering speaker placement, room reflections and listening distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify services and control

List the services you actually use, then check the current app and regional compatibility pages for the exact model. Naim and BluOS publish compatibility documentation, but catalogues and integrations can change. Also confirm whether you need AirPlay 2, a headphone output, multi-room zones or television control.

5. Match levels before listening

When comparing two streamers, level-match their analogue outputs as closely as possible and use the same recordings, amplifier input and speaker position. A slightly louder component can sound more detailed or exciting even when the underlying difference is small.

6. Use familiar recordings

Choose tracks with acoustic attacks, sustained vocals, dense bass and quiet ambience. Listen for changes in timing, bass definition, image stability and vocal texture rather than waiting for a dramatic tonal shift. Make notes after several tracks instead of deciding on the first impressive chorus.

Connectivity and format trade-offs

Higher-resolution support is useful only if it matches your library and playback path. The following figures are documented capabilities, not quality scores.

Does a higher sample rate mean better sound?

No. The EXN100’s 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512 support is broader than the Cyrus 40 ST’s explicitly cited 24-bit/192kHz lossless ceiling, but those numbers do not establish audible superiority. A well-mastered 24-bit/96kHz recording can sound better than a poorly mastered file at a higher rate. The DAC implementation, analogue output stage, amplifier, speakers and room remain part of the result.

Common buying mistakes

  • Treating review language as a guarantee: “Punchy,” “balanced” and “engaging” describe a test system and listener. They are clues for matching, not universal measurements.
  • Ignoring the amplifier input: A streamer with XLR outputs helps only when the amplifier accepts a compatible balanced connection and the complete chain is configured correctly.
  • Buying for sample-rate bragging rights: Confirm that your library and DAC can use the advertised rates.
  • Overlooking software: A service or control feature that is unavailable in your country can matter more than a small sound-quality difference.
  • Comparing at different volumes: Level mismatch can create a false winner.
  • Putting a reference streamer in a revealingly mismatched system: Upgrading speakers, room acoustics or amplification may produce a larger improvement than moving between streamers.

Final recommendation by buyer type

Choose the Cyrus 40 ST if sound quality comes first

It is the best starting point for a buyer who wants a dedicated streamer and values the strongest current independent report: expressive, punchy playback with excellent rhythmic drive. Its bit-perfect, no-configuration approach and 24-bit/192kHz lossless support cover mainstream hi-res use.

Choose the Naim ND555 if you are building around Naim

The ND555 is the premium reference option. Investigate it when the rest of your system is capable of showing the difference, when Naim integration matters and when value-oriented feature counts are not the priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Cambridge Audio EXN100 for balanced versatility

It is the most compelling fit for a mixed music-and-TV system that needs HDMI eARC, Bluetooth, XLR and broad PCM/DSD support while retaining a clear, spacious and balanced presentation.

Choose the Bluesound NODE for the easiest complete experience

It is the practical winner when BluOS multi-room, AirPlay 2, a headphone output and television integration are central. Its sound is engaging in its range, and the extra convenience can make it the best overall choice for a household even when a more dedicated streamer may have greater high-end refinement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Cyrus 40 ST be declared objectively better sounding than the Naim ND555?

No. The current evidence gives Cyrus the stronger published review verdict, while Naim is identified as a reference product. There is no controlled statistic proving a universal winner, and system matching can reverse a preference.

Is the Cambridge EXN100’s 32-bit/768kHz support audible by itself?

Not necessarily. It confirms compatibility with very high-resolution files, but sample-rate capability alone does not determine sound quality. The recording, DAC, analogue stage and rest of the system remain decisive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is the Bluesound NODE a better purchase than a dedicated high-end streamer?

Choose it when HDMI eARC, Dolby Digital decoding, AirPlay 2, headphones or wireless BluOS multi-room will be used regularly. Those functions can deliver more practical value than a small difference heard in a specialist two-channel audition.

What should I check before ordering any of these streamers?

Verify the exact model’s current service support in your country, the outputs your amplifier accepts, the file formats you actually use and whether you need TV, headphone or multi-room functions.
