It integrates axe-core and lets tests scan specific page or component states. Consider wick-a11y for additional in-runner presentation and voice feedback, cypress-a11y-report for reporting, or cypress-accessibility-checker if you want IBM Equal Access. Check each package’s current Cypress compatibility before installing, and treat automated results as one part of accessibility testing—not proof that an application is accessible.

How does cypress-axe fit into a test?
Cypress documents cypress-axe as an axe-core integration. After setup, a test can invoke checkA11y() against the current page or component state. The key is that the test author chooses when to scan: a check after initial load does not automatically cover a menu after it opens, a modal, validation errors or any other later state.
Cypress says checks can be configured for selected WCAG success criteria and related rules, and tests can fail when findings are detected. Scope checks to meaningful parts of the interface when that fits the test, rather than repeatedly scanning the same unchanged page. Follow the plugin’s own current documentation for installation, support files, command setup and exact configuration syntax; those package-specific setup details are not established here. What the alternatives add
wick-a11y: findings presented in the runner
wick-a11y builds on cypress-axe and is described by Cypress as adding visual highlighting, HTML reports with screenshots and voice feedback. These features address how findings are presented, rather than establishing that its underlying checks cover every accessibility concern. The description comes from the creator and Cypress’s November 7, 2024 article, not an independent benchmark; confirm current package compatibility before adopting it. cypress-a11y-report: report-oriented output
Cypress describes cypress-a11y-report as an axe-core reporting plugin built on cypress-axe. Its directory listing at the October 3, 2026 check showed version 1.0.4, an October 2024 update and Cypress compatibility ^10 through ^13. That listing makes compatibility especially important if your project uses a later Cypress release.

cypress-accessibility-checker: IBM Equal Access
This integration uses IBM Equal Access rather than axe-core. The directory listing at the October 3, 2026 check showed version 4.0.34 and support for Cypress ^13.2.0, ^15 and ^16. Choose it when the engine is a deliberate fit for your team, then review IBM’s documentation to understand its configuration and findings; the listed version alone does not establish how its results compare with another checker.
What automated scans can—and cannot—tell you
Automated scans can identify violations of known rules, including issues such as poor color contrast, missing labels and missing image alt text. They cannot judge every interaction or establish that an experience works for people with disabilities. Cypress puts it plainly: “While automated scans do a good job at detecting violations of a known list of rules, no automated scan can prove that the interface is fully accessible and works well for users with disabilities.” Cypress accessibility testing guide

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use scan findings alongside manual evaluation and assertions for the behavior your application requires. Cypress documents checking keyboard navigation with native key events, asserting image alt text and accessible names, and using accessible locators. A locator’s successful match is not itself an accessibility assertion: test the implementation or expected user-visible behavior explicitly.
How to cover interactive states without slowing every test
Each scan evaluates DOM elements against applicable rules and takes time. Cypress notes that many repeated scans across hundreds or thousands of application states can materially increase pipeline runtime. Avoid redundant scans, but do not limit checks to the initial page when the product’s important interactions create different states.

- Identify meaningful states in the user journey, such as an expanded menu, modal, form error or later step in a multistep flow.
- Run scans at those points rather than repeatedly scanning an unchanged state.
- Where appropriate, limit the page or rule scope and consider component tests for isolated UI states.
- Keep separate assertions for application-specific expectations—such as keyboard behavior—that a generic rule scan cannot determine.
This balances pipeline cost with coverage of the states people actually encounter. Cypress accessibility testing guide
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate a plugin before adopting it
- Engine and rules: Decide whether axe-core or IBM Equal Access fits your workflow, and consult the package documentation for configurable rules and standards.
- Workflow: Check how the plugin is installed and configured, where scans run, and how tests fail when findings occur.
- Results: Decide whether raw findings are sufficient or whether runner highlighting, HTML reports, screenshots or voice feedback matter to your team.
- Compatibility and upkeep: Confirm the published Cypress range, current releases, repository activity, license and support expectations.
- CI impact: Account for scan duration, duplicate checks and how findings will be surfaced to developers.
- Manual complement: Plan how to evaluate keyboard use, screen-reader-relevant experience and application-specific behavior beyond automated rules.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Cypress accessibility scanner; it is an alternative when the related task is capturing a page for visual review or AI-agent workflows. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, using the documented API pattern:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.
