Texas has cybersecurity study options at technical schools, community colleges, public universities and independent institutions. The most reliable way to find a current program is to search the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) program inventory, then confirm the degree plan, intake term, delivery format, transfer rules and costs in the institution’s current catalog. Search broadly because programs may be labeled cybersecurity, cyber security, information assurance, cyber defense, digital forensics, computer security, cyber analytics or a concentration within another degree.

Where to find cybersecurity degree programs and schools in Texas

Begin with the THECB program inventory rather than an undated ranking or listicle. Its search covers public community, technical and state colleges; public universities; health-related institutions; Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT) institutions; and certain authorized providers. You can search by program name, institution, degree level and Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code, among other fields.

Run several searches instead of entering only “cybersecurity.” Texas institutions use different names for closely related curricula. Useful terms include:

  • cybersecurity and cyber security
  • information assurance
  • cyber defense
  • digital forensics
  • computer security
  • cyber analytics
  • a cybersecurity concentration or track inside information technology, computer science, business or engineering

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) describes its statewide examples as non-exhaustive and directs students toward THECB tools for broader postsecondary exploration. A program appearing in a historical state report is a lead for further checking, not proof that the program still admits students.

#1 Best Overall

How to validate a result

  1. Record the exact institution, degree title, award level and CIP code shown in the THECB result.
  2. Open the school’s current catalog and program page. Check whether the program is accepting a new cohort and whether the listed curriculum applies to your intended start term.
  3. Confirm campus, hybrid or fully online delivery for the named degree. A university can offer one online cybersecurity credential while delivering another only on campus.
  4. Ask admissions or advising for current prerequisites, transfer-credit rules, tuition and mandatory fees, course rotation and program-specific outcomes.

What kinds of credentials are available?

Texas cybersecurity education spans short certificates through doctoral study. The right level depends on your existing credits, the work you want to do and whether you need a broad academic foundation or a focused skill upgrade.

Credential Typical use Questions to verify
Certificate Focused preparation in areas such as security operations, cyber defense or forensics; may be suitable for current workers or students testing the field. Is it undergraduate or graduate? Do its courses apply to a later degree?
Associate degree (AAS or similar) Two-year technical route that can prepare for entry-level support, networking or security work and may feed a bachelor’s pathway. Which general-education and technical credits transfer to the target university?
BAS, BS or BBA Four-year preparation combining technical security with applied technology, computer science, analytics, business or policy. Are math, programming, networking or prior-college prerequisites required?
MS or graduate certificate Advanced technical, analytical, management or policy study for graduates and working professionals. What bachelor’s background, GPA, exams and prerequisite courses are required?
PhD Research and university-level teaching preparation, often in information technology, computer science or a related discipline. Which faculty research areas, milestones and funding options are active for your entry year?

A title alone does not reveal the emphasis. Read the course list for operating systems, networks, secure software, cloud security, incident response, digital forensics, governance, risk, policy, statistics and capstone or laboratory work. A business-oriented cybersecurity degree can be a good fit for governance or risk roles, while a computer-science route may devote more time to algorithms and programming.

Current Texas examples to investigate

The following programs have current catalog or institution-page evidence in the available material. They are examples for comparison, not a statewide ranking or a claim that these are the only active options.

Institution Programs or pathway described Delivery and requirements noted What to confirm
Austin Community College (ACC) Bachelor of Applied Science in Cybersecurity. Designed to build on an associate degree and previous credit. The described eligibility includes junior status, at least 60 college-level semester hours in cybersecurity, network administration or a related field, and 12 cybersecurity course hours. Examples of that preparation are operating-systems security, firewalls and network security, intrusion detection/ethical hacking, and computer systems forensics. ACC evaluates outside transfer credit individually. Ask an advisor to map every course before assuming it satisfies the BAS plan.
The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) BBA in Cybersecurity; BS in Applied Cyber Analytics; BS in Cybersecurity; related minors. Graduate options include an MS in Information Technology with a cybersecurity concentration, a dual MSIT/Master in Cybersecurity option with Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, a PhD in Information Technology and a graduate certificate in cybersecurity. The BBA in Cybersecurity is listed as 100-percent online and requires 120 semester credit hours. The graduate catalog says the MS in Information Technology will be available in a 100-percent online format beginning Spring 2027. Verify the online start term, residency or synchronous-session rules, current degree requirements and admissions standards with UTSA advising.
The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) BS in Cybersecurity Technology and Policy; undergraduate cyber defense certificate; computer-science graduate cybersecurity concentration. The university also reports participation in the NSF CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program since 2010. UT Dallas reports nearly 100 graduates placed in federal cybersecurity roles, but the page gives no measurement date or cohort definition. Treat it as an institutional statement, not a comparable placement rate.

Historical state examples

A THECB report on strategies for developing cybersecurity degrees includes historical appendices with public four-year and two-year programs, award types and start dates. Examples named there include UTSA’s cybersecurity BBA, the University of North Texas cybersecurity BS and MS, Lamar University’s cybersecurity BS, and multiple community-college certificates and AAS programs. Because those tables document earlier offerings, check each one in the current THECB inventory and school catalog before applying.

Are there online cybersecurity degrees in Texas?

Yes, but online availability is program-specific. UTSA lists its BBA in Cybersecurity as fully online, with 120 semester credit hours. Its graduate catalog says the MS in Information Technology with a cybersecurity concentration becomes available in a 100-percent online format in Spring 2027. These statements do not establish that every UTSA cybersecurity credential, or every Texas program, is online.

Questions to ask about an online format

  • Is the entire degree online, or are orientation, laboratories, exams or capstones required on campus?
  • Are classes asynchronous, or do they meet at fixed times in your time zone?
  • Does the published plan assume a full-time load, and are required courses offered every term?
  • Are online students charged different tuition, distance-learning fees or proctoring costs?
  • Can residents of another state enroll, and are there professional-licensure or authorization restrictions?
  • How are virtual labs, internships and team projects delivered?

Can you transfer from a community college into a cybersecurity bachelor’s program?

Often, but the amount of credit that applies is determined by the receiving institution and degree plan. ACC’s BAS in Cybersecurity illustrates a structured transfer route: students build on an associate degree or related prior coursework, enter with junior status, and meet the described 60-semester-hour and 12-cybersecurity-hour thresholds. The 12 hours can include operating-systems security, firewalls and network security, intrusion detection/ethical hacking and computer systems forensics.

ACC states that credit earned at another college is evaluated individually and advises students to speak with an advisor. A course can transfer as elective credit without satisfying a specific upper-level requirement, so “accepted” credit is not the same as “degree-applicable” credit.

Transfer-planning checklist

  1. Choose the bachelor’s program before registering for a large block of electives.
  2. Send official transcripts and obtain a written or degree-audit evaluation.
  3. Match each transferred course to a named requirement: general education, lower-division major, upper-division major or free elective.
  4. Ask whether technical courses have age limits, lab requirements or minimum grades.
  5. Confirm the remaining semester hours, prerequisite sequence and earliest graduation term.
  6. Keep syllabi and major assignments for courses whose content the evaluator needs to review.

How to compare Texas cybersecurity programs

Use the same questions for every school. This prevents a short certificate, a 120-hour bachelor’s degree and a graduate concentration from being compared as if they were equivalent products.

Comparison area Evidence to collect
Credential and level Certificate, AAS, BAS, BS, BBA, MS, PhD or graduate certificate; total semester hours and expected sequence.
Academic emphasis Hands-on technical security, computer science, engineering, cyber analytics, business, policy, digital forensics or critical infrastructure.
Delivery and location Campus, hybrid or fully online status for the exact program; required visits, labs and meeting times.
Admission requirements Prior degree or credits, mathematics and programming prerequisites, GPA, placement testing and technical coursework.
Transfer fit Which credits count toward the named degree, minimum grades, articulation agreements and individual-review process.
Time and scheduling Full-time and part-time maps, course availability, summer terms, capstone timing and realistic completion date.
Total cost Resident or nonresident tuition, mandatory fees, books, lab or distance fees and financial-aid rules for your enrollment load.
Outcomes Program-specific graduation, retention, internship, certification and employment measures, with cohort years and definitions.

The official material available for these examples does not provide a comparable, current school-by-school dataset for tuition, completion, placement or earnings. Do not label a program “best,” “cheapest” or “highest placement” without dated definitions and comparable cohorts. Request the underlying numbers directly from each institution.

Entry requirements and preparation

Requirements vary by award and campus. Before applying, check whether you need college algebra, statistics, programming, networking, operating systems, an associate degree, a minimum GPA or a specific number of transferable hours. Graduate applicants should also ask whether a non-computer-science bachelor’s degree is acceptable and which bridge courses may be imposed.

Use the published curriculum to identify preparation gaps. If the first term assumes networking or programming knowledge, completing an introductory course before enrollment can prevent a schedule delay. For a transfer BAS, verify that your technical courses meet the receiving school’s subject and credit-hour definitions rather than relying on course titles alone.

A practical application process

  1. Search statewide. Use THECB program-name, degree-level, institution and CIP-code fields with several terminology variants.
  2. Shortlist by fit. Separate certificates, associate degrees, bachelor’s programs and graduate options; then mark campus, hybrid and online formats.
  3. Read the current catalog. Save the catalog year and degree-plan version that applies to your intended entry term.
  4. Request an advising review. Bring transcripts, syllabi and questions about prerequisites, transfer credit and course rotation.
  5. Price the full route. Obtain a term-by-term estimate including mandatory fees, books, lab costs and your residency classification.
  6. Check outcomes carefully. Ask for cohort dates, graduation denominator, employment definition and whether figures cover the named program or the entire institution.
  7. Apply and recheck. Confirm that the program remains open for your term and that any online option has not changed before submitting enrollment documents.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Relying on an old list

State reports and school pages can outlive a program revision or suspension. Use historical lists to discover names, then verify the active inventory and catalog.

Searching only one spelling

A search for “cybersecurity” can miss cyber security, information assurance, cyber defense, digital forensics, computer security and cyber-analytics programs. Repeat the THECB search with each relevant term and inspect concentrations.

Assuming an institution-wide online label applies to your degree

Confirm the exact award, delivery percentage, start term and any in-person requirements. UTSA’s published online BBA and its future Spring 2027 online MSIT format demonstrate why degree-level verification matters.

Counting all accepted transfer credit as progress toward graduation

Ask where each course lands in the degree audit. ACC’s individual evaluation warning applies broadly: transferred hours may count only as electives or may not meet an upper-level requirement.

Using an isolated outcome statistic as a ranking

UT Dallas’s nearly 100 federal-role placements are reported without a date or cohort definition. They cannot be converted into a current placement rate or compared fairly with another school’s differently defined figure.

Choosing a route based on your starting point

  • No college credit: Compare an associate or four-year program by foundational computing, mathematics, laboratory work and total time.
  • Technical associate degree: Prioritize documented articulation and a written transfer evaluation; an applied bachelor’s route may reduce repeated coursework.
  • Bachelor’s degree in another field: Examine graduate certificates, prerequisite requirements and master’s concentrations before starting a second undergraduate degree.
  • Working professional: Compare asynchronous scheduling, part-time sequencing, online labs and whether a certificate can stack into a larger credential.
  • Research or teaching goal: Review master’s thesis options, doctoral faculty interests, research infrastructure and funding rather than selecting solely by delivery format.

Texas offers enough variety that the best choice is the program whose credential level, technical emphasis, schedule, transfer treatment and verified cost match your circumstances. Start with THECB for breadth, then rely on the current school catalog and an advisor’s written evaluation for the decision that affects your enrollment.
