Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is not a direct continuation of David Martinez’s crew. Creator Bartosz Sztybor describes it as being in “constant dialogue” with season 1: it uses a new cast to examine a related rise-and-fall idea inside the same Night City. The second season is reported to premiere on Netflix on October 20, 2026.

Is season 2 a sequel to David’s story?

No. Season 2 follows new characters rather than resuming David Martinez and his crew’s narrative. CD Projekt’s position, quoted in the report, is blunt: “David is dead. But Night City lives on.” That means the series can return to the Cyberpunk setting without undoing season 1’s ending or bringing David back as the protagonist.

The connection is thematic and consequential rather than a direct handoff. Season 1 established Night City as a place where ambition, cyberware and violence can propel an outsider upward while making the eventual collapse more devastating. Season 2 asks what another group’s story looks like in that same environment.

How season 2 connects to season 1

“Constant dialogue” rather than a retelling

Sztybor says the new season was designed to remain in “constant dialogue with Edgerunners season 1.” In practical terms, that means season 2 responds to the first season’s ideas—fame, identity, sacrifice and the cost of surviving Night City—without requiring David’s plot to continue. Night City functions as a larger story engine, with different people reaching for status and finding different consequences.

A deliberate reversal of the first season’s trajectory

Sztybor summarizes the structural contrast this way: “In Edgerunners season 1, it’s zero to hero. In Edgerunners season 2, it’s hero to zero.” The first phrase describes David’s climb from an overlooked teenager to a feared edgerunner. The second points toward a protagonist whose best days are already behind him and whose struggle is shaped by decline rather than discovery.

Comparison Season 1 Season 2
Protagonist and cast David Martinez and his crew A new ensemble of characters
Core trajectory “Zero to hero” “Hero to zero”
Relationship between seasons A single crew’s tragic arc Thematic dialogue with season 1
Role of Night City The pressure cooker for David’s rise and fall A reservoir of separate stories beyond David’s crew

Who is Weak Kingsley?

Weak Kingsley is a veteran edgerunner whose former success has faded. He represents the “hero to zero” premise: someone who once possessed status and recognition now has to live with their loss. The character grew out of a question Sztybor asked while writing season 1: “What if David made it? What if he didn’t die? He will become this celebrity Edgerunner in a few years.”

Sztybor then reconsidered that hypothetical future. He described David as a flawed, tragic persona and concluded that celebrity would not necessarily produce a happy ending. That line of thought helped inspire Weak. Weak is therefore not David revived under another name; he is a separate character built to explore the kind of aftermath David might have faced if survival had led to fame, aging and eventual erosion of status.

Clancy Brown provides Weak’s English-dub voice, according to the report. His role is part of the new character focus, not evidence that the original crew is returning.

Why Night City can support a new story

Sztybor says the team began brainstorming with Studio Trigger and gradually found “other characters and other things to put in this season.” The creative choice treats Night City as more than the backdrop for one tragedy. Its institutions, criminal economy and appetite for spectacle can generate many independent arcs, allowing season 2 to preserve the setting’s identity while changing whose life is at stake.

This approach also protects the finality of season 1. David’s death remains part of the world’s history, while the city continues producing new edgerunners, new celebrities and new casualties. Viewers can expect echoes of the first season’s concerns, but not a reset of its ending.

What this means for returning viewers

  • Do not expect David’s comeback: season 2 centers on new characters, and the stated continuity position is that David is dead.
  • Expect a conversation with season 1: recurring ideas and the consequences of Night City’s culture connect the seasons.
  • Watch the direction of the character arc: the defining movement is from former hero toward obscurity, not from unknown newcomer toward fame.
  • Keep the setting in view: Night City is presented as a continuing source of stories, so season 2 can stand on its own while carrying season 1’s themes forward.
