Crowd Variety Restored brings back more than 2,200 completed civilian appearances that shipped in Cyberpunk 2077’s files but were not normally assigned to street crowds. The Nexus Mods project more than doubles variety for many civilian types, reduces obvious side-by-side duplicates and leaves quest characters untouched. It makes Night City look less repetitive, but it does not add more people to the streets or give them the deeper interactions expected from GTA 6.
What Crowd Variety Restored changes
The mod distributes additional appearances from each civilian type’s existing wardrobe. That means corpos, nightlife crowds, monks and Dogtown residents keep their recognizable visual identities while gaining more combinations of clothing, hair, colors, cyberware and accessories. A built-in “Twin Fix” can assign another look when two civilians who would otherwise match spawn close together.

According to uploader dnbnhlp’s 2026 Nexus Mods listing, more than nine in 10 civilian types receive extra looks. The average wardrobe rises from 18 to 48 appearances; 237 civilian types at least double their variety, and 141 at least triple it.

These figures describe appearance variants, not 2,200 newly spawned NPCs. The assets already existed in the game files; the mod makes more of them eligible for ordinary crowd generation.

Why the streets can still feel repetitive
Cyberpunk 2077 uses a limited selection of appearances for each civilian archetype. In busy districts, the same face, outfit or accessory can therefore recur within a short distance. Crowd Variety Restored widens those selections and specifically targets identical civilians appearing next to one another.
The change is visual rather than systemic. It does not increase population density, add extra pedestrians to the screen or alter the city’s crowd-generation limits. A separate earlier restoration project was reported to return about 100 cut citizen NPCs without increasing the number of NPCs visible at once, and it left main and secondary character appearances unchanged. Crowd Variety Restored follows the same basic distinction: more possible looks, not a denser simulation.

What it does not do
- It does not replace quest characters. Story and quest-related NPCs remain unique rather than being randomized into the civilian pool.
- It does not create GTA 6-level behavior. NPC interactions and reactions remain limited even when appearances are more varied.
- It does not add walking animations by itself. The companion Crowd Walks Restored project is intended to add unused styles such as worried, sad, angry, calm and confident.
Version 1.0.3 and Phantom Liberty support
Nexus Mods lists version 1.0.3 as uploaded on 9 October 2026 and updated on 14 October 2026. That release uses one download for installations with or without Phantom Liberty and gives voices to nine vanilla civilians that previously had none.

Earlier 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 updates addressed silent civilians, restored voice reactions, corrected footstep and clothing sounds, supplied a no-Phantom Liberty option and removed three see-through street looks. Because the game and its mod framework can change after patches, check the live requirements and compatibility notes on the mod page before installing.

Requirements and installation
The project requires three framework components:
- redscript
- Codeware
- Mod Settings
Install with a compatible mod manager or manually extract the downloaded files into the Cyberpunk 2077 root directory, following the folder structure supplied by the mod. Launch the game once after installation and verify that the framework components load before troubleshooting the crowd changes.
Avoid overlapping duplicate randomizers
Do not combine Crowd Variety Restored with other mods that rewrite the same crowd-look pool, including No More Duplicate NPCs or Lightweight Crowd Duplicate Randomizer. The project already includes its own duplicate-avoidance feature. Running two systems that edit the same appearances can produce conflicts, missing assets or unpredictable results.

The projects can address different sources of repetition: appearance variety, restored citizen assets and locomotion. None turns routine pedestrians into fully simulated characters with extensive emergent conversations or activities.
Who should install it?
- Install it if repeated faces and outfits are one of your biggest immersion problems, especially in dense districts and during long free-roam sessions.
- Use caution if your setup already includes crowd randomizers or extensive appearance overhauls; remove overlapping systems rather than stacking them.
- Skip it if you expect more pedestrians, new missions or major changes to NPC behavior. Those are outside its scope.
For players on either the base game or Phantom Liberty, version 1.0.3 offers the same current package as of 14 October 2026. The practical result is a more varied-looking Night City, not a larger crowd or a replacement for the game’s underlying NPC simulation.
