Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077 are connected by the same Cyberpunk universe and the same Night City, but they are not the same story. The anime is an officially described standalone, 10-episode story about David Martinez, while the game follows a rising mercenary whose choices shape a much larger interactive campaign. You can watch Edgerunners without playing the game, and you can play Cyberpunk 2077 without seeing the anime.
What is the connection between Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077?
CD PROJEKT RED announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as a standalone series “set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077.” That wording establishes a shared setting and lore foundation, not a direct adaptation of the game’s plot. The anime follows its own protagonist, supporting cast and dramatic arc.

Both stories use Night City, a technology-saturated city where corporations, gangs, mercenaries and body modification define everyday life. In the anime, David Martinez enters the city’s criminal underworld after a personal tragedy and pushes his cyberware to its limits. In the game, the player controls V, a mercenary taking early jobs in Night City. Their paths belong to the same world, but David is not a version of V and the anime is not a retelling of the game’s campaign.

What is shared, and what is separate?
| Question | What the official descriptions establish | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Universe | Both are set in the Cyberpunk 2077 world. | They are not one continuous adaptation of a single script. |
| Primary setting | Night City is central to both stories. | A shared city does not prove that every event occurs at the same time. |
| Protagonist | Edgerunners follows David Martinez; the game follows the player-created mercenary V. | David is not V, and V is not required to understand David’s story. |
| Format | Edgerunners is a fixed 10-episode anime; Cyberpunk 2077 is an interactive role-playing game. | The anime does not reproduce the game’s quests or branching decisions. |
| Story status | CD PROJEKT RED calls the anime standalone. | Do not label it an official prequel, sequel or mission-by-mission companion unless a later source explicitly does so. |
Does Edgerunners take place in the same Night City as the game?
Yes. The official anime description places David in Night City’s criminal underworld, and CD PROJEKT’s description of the game places its mercenary story in Night City. This is the strongest practical link between the two works: the city supplies the social rules, visual language and conflicts that make both stories recognizably Cyberpunk.

Night City is more than a backdrop
In both versions, technological enhancement and body modification are tied to status, survival and danger. Corporations wield enormous power, while people on the street make money through risky jobs and unstable alliances. The anime can focus tightly on how those pressures affect David and his crew; the game lets you approach the same kind of city through exploration, combat, dialogue and player choice.
That common environment explains why the anime feels familiar to players even when its cast and immediate plot are new. It does not, by itself, provide an official date for every scene or prove that a particular game quest occurs before or after an anime episode.
Is Edgerunners the story of Cyberpunk 2077?
No. It is a separate story in the same setting. CD PROJEKT RED’s original announcement described a standalone 10-episode series about a street kid who becomes an edgerunner in a city obsessed with technology and body modification. The current official anime description identifies David as a young edgerunner who enters Night City’s underworld after a personal tragedy.

Why the distinction matters
- No required crossover knowledge: The anime is written to function as a complete story rather than as homework for game owners.
- No single protagonist across both works: David and V represent different routes through Night City.
- No automatic chronology: Shared lore does not establish a precise year or a quest-by-quest sequence.
- Different kinds of stakes: The anime controls its pacing and outcome; the game lets the player create a personal version of events.
When does Edgerunners take place compared with the game?
The safest answer is that both occupy the same fictional universe, while the official pages reviewed do not give an exact in-world year or map the anime to specific game quests. Calling Edgerunners a confirmed prequel or sequel goes beyond that evidence.
Use “same universe” and “same Night City” when explaining the relationship. If you are making a viewing or playing order, choose based on your preferred experience rather than on an official chronology:
- Anime first: You get a focused introduction to Night City’s atmosphere and its personal cost, then approach the game with that context.
- Game first: You learn the setting through exploration and player choice before seeing another character’s independent story.
- Parallel viewing and playing: You can alternate without needing to align episodes to particular missions; the official material does not establish such a sequence.
Do you need to play Cyberpunk 2077 before watching Edgerunners?
No. Edgerunners was presented as a standalone series, so a first-time viewer can follow David’s rise without prior game knowledge. You may recognize more of the setting’s terminology or visual design after playing, but that familiarity is optional rather than a prerequisite.
If you watch first
Pay attention to how David’s crew navigates jobs, cyberware and Night City’s power structures. The game then gives you a much broader chance to investigate those systems from V’s perspective. Avoid expecting David’s exact crew or plot to become the game’s main campaign.

How the storytelling differs between the game and anime
| Aspect | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | Cyberpunk 2077 |
|---|---|---|
| Control of events | The series has a fixed narrative and ending. | The player makes dialogue, exploration and mission choices that shape V’s experience. |
| Viewpoint | David’s authored journey anchors the story. | V is a player-created mercenary whose identity is partly defined through choices. |
| Pacing | Ten episodes determine when relationships and crises develop. | Players can follow the main campaign, take side work or explore in a self-directed order. |
| World access | Scenes select the locations and conflicts needed for David’s story. | Night City is explored directly through missions, travel and optional activities. |
| Emotional effect | Editing, performance, music and animation guide a common audience response. | Role-playing choices can make the same setting feel different from one player to another. |
These are complementary approaches rather than competing versions of one plot. The anime demonstrates what a tightly authored tragedy can do in Night City; the game demonstrates how an interactive character can move through that world.
How the anime and game became linked in release history
The connection became especially visible around the anime’s 2022 debut. CD PROJEKT’s corporate history records that Patch 1.6 for Cyberpunk 2077 launched on September 6, 2022, one week before the anime debuted on Netflix on September 13.
| Date or milestone | What happened | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| June 25, 2020 | CD PROJEKT RED announced the anime with Studio Trigger and Netflix. | The announcement said the series would premiere in 2022; that was a contemporaneous plan, not a current release date. |
| September 6, 2022 | Patch 1.6 for Cyberpunk 2077 released. | Date reported in CD PROJEKT’s corporate history. |
| September 13, 2022 | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuted on Netflix. | Date reported in CD PROJEKT’s corporate history. |
| Premiere week, 2022 | CD PROJEKT reported that the anime entered Netflix’s Top 10 in 19 countries. | This is the company’s own report, not an independent audience measurement. |
| End of September 2022 | CD PROJEKT quoted then-CEO Adam Kiciński saying the game had been purchased by more than 20 million players. | A company-reported sales milestone. |
| December 5, 2023 | Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition debuted in physical distribution for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, and digitally for PC. | The edition includes the base game, Phantom Liberty, free Update 2.0 and previously released digital extras. |
| October 20, 2026 | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix. | As of October 16, 2026, this is an upcoming date announced by CD PROJEKT RED. |
CD PROJEKT’s history says the anime’s popularity and the positive reception of Update 1.6 had a measurable effect on game sales. That is the company’s account of the relationship; it should not be treated as independent proof that one specific factor caused every sale.

What was announced about Edgerunners 2?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is not a continuation of David’s original 10-episode plot. CD PROJEKT RED announced it as a new standalone anime in the Cyberpunk 2077 world, again created with TRIGGER and planned for Netflix. The later August 21, 2026 announcement gives it a Netflix premiere date of October 20, 2026, describes a 10-episode series and introduces new cast members and storylines across Night City.
The announcement characterizes the new story around revenge and redemption. Because it is described as standalone, viewers should approach it as another entry in the shared world rather than assume it will explain an exact chronology between the first anime and the game.

What should you play if the anime makes you want more Night City?
Choose the game for a longer, interactive campaign
Cyberpunk 2077 is the relevant next step if you want to explore Night City directly, create your own mercenary and make decisions rather than follow a fixed episode order. The game’s story is centered on V, so expect a new protagonist and new plot even though the setting is familiar.
Choose the Ultimate Edition when its contents fit your platform
CD PROJEKT describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as an all-in-one package containing the base game, the Phantom Liberty expansion, free Update 2.0 and previously released digital extras. Its documented physical console formats are Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, with a digital PC edition. The edition does not include the anime; it is game content only.
Use the manga as optional supplementary material
Edgerunners MADNESS expands the anime’s world through Rebecca and Pilar’s earlier story. Since the official page describes the paperback as upcoming, confirm publication status, regional stock and price before ordering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical order for newcomers
- Watch the 10-episode anime. No game installation or prior lore study is required.
- Decide whether you want authored drama or player agency next. Rewatching the anime keeps David’s story focused; starting the game opens a separate campaign as V.
- If you buy the game, verify the platform and edition. The documented Ultimate Edition physical releases are for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; PC distribution is digital.
- Treat chronology claims cautiously. Do not arrange individual quests around anime episodes unless an official source later supplies that mapping.
- Check current availability for related releases. Streaming catalogs, physical game stock and the Edgerunners MADNESS paperback can vary by country and date.
Common mistakes about the connection
- Calling Edgerunners a game adaptation: It is better described as a shared-universe adaptation with a standalone plot.
- Assuming David is a game character: David has his own story; the game protagonist is V.
- Declaring an exact timeline: The official descriptions establish the universe and setting, not a precise in-world year.
- Expecting the Ultimate Edition to contain the anime: It contains game software and expansions, not Netflix episodes.
- Treating company figures as neutral ratings: The 19-country Top 10 claim and more-than-20-million-player figure come from CD PROJEKT’s own corporate reporting.
- Assuming Edgerunners 2 continues David’s arc: It is announced as a new 10-episode standalone story with a new cast and storylines.
The bottom line on Cyberpunk 2077 vs. Edgerunners
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077 connect through Night City, shared worldbuilding and the broader Cyberpunk 2077 universe. They remain separate works: David’s fixed 10-episode anime is not V’s interactive campaign, and the official material does not establish an exact chronological order. Watch the anime first, play the game first or do both in either order—the choice changes your perspective, not your ability to understand the story.
