Cyberpunk 2077 Standard Edition is the base game. Ultimate Edition bundles that game with the paid Phantom Liberty expansion, all free downloadable content, and free updates such as Update 2.0. Update 2.0 is not locked to Ultimate: supported owners of the base game on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S can install it without buying the expansion. The practical choice is whether you want Phantom Liberty now, and which platform, region, format, and SKU you are buying.
At a glance: Standard versus Ultimate
Storefronts sometimes use “Standard Edition” as shorthand for the ordinary base game, so read the itemized contents on the exact listing. The comparison below describes the editions as they are generally sold, while noting where a platform or retailer can change the packaging.

What Standard Edition actually contains
The complete base game
Standard Edition is the original Cyberpunk 2077 game. It gives you the base campaign and the open-world Night City experience associated with that release. “Standard” does not mean a trial, a shortened campaign or a version with the main systems removed; it is the core game sold without the paid expansion.

The important omission is Phantom Liberty. Buying Standard does not unlock the expansion’s separate story and content. If an ordinary listing does not explicitly name Phantom Liberty or “Ultimate,” assume it is the base game only until the store page confirms otherwise.

Free content is a separate issue from the edition name
Free downloadable content and free game updates are not the same thing as the paid expansion. A Standard owner can receive free additions and supported updates without owning Ultimate. The edition label therefore does not tell you that the base game is missing every post-launch improvement; it tells you whether the paid expansion is bundled.
What Ultimate Edition adds
Phantom Liberty is the paid expansion in the bundle
Ultimate combines the base game with Phantom Liberty. That is the decisive content difference for a new buyer. You are not purchasing a different base-game campaign; you are purchasing the base game and the expansion together in one edition.
Free DLC and free updates are packaged with the purchase
The bundle also packages the free downloadable content and free updates associated with the game, including Update 2.0. “Included” here means the Ultimate package represents the current complete product offering; it does not mean that those free updates are exclusive to Ultimate owners. A supported Standard owner can receive the same free update without purchasing the bundle.
Why the bundle can be simpler for a first-time buyer
For someone who has never bought the game, Ultimate avoids having to identify the base game and then add the expansion as a second transaction. It also makes the intended content scope clear on the product page. That convenience matters most when the bundle’s current price is close to the combined cost of the separate products, but prices and promotions vary by storefront and region, so check the live listing rather than relying on a fixed price assumption.

Update 2.0: free systems, not an Ultimate-exclusive feature
Who can get it
Update 2.0 is available at no extra charge to owners of the supported base game on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You do not need Ultimate merely to install or use that update on those platforms.
What the update changes
The update includes major system changes affecting police behavior, perks, vehicle combat, cyberware and other gameplay systems. Those changes belong to the free update layer, not to the paid Phantom Liberty entitlement. If you buy Standard and update it on a supported platform, these revised systems are still part of your game.
What Update 2.0 does not provide
Installing Update 2.0 does not grant the Phantom Liberty story or its expansion content. Treat the two decisions independently: Update 2.0 determines whether your base game is current, while Ultimate determines whether the paid expansion is included.
How Phantom Liberty changes the buying decision
If you want only the base campaign
Standard is sufficient when your goal is the original game and its free updates. You still need to confirm that the platform is one you can use and that the listing is not an expansion-only product or a bundle with different contents.

If you want the expansion’s additional story
Choose Ultimate as a new purchase when you want Phantom Liberty immediately. The expansion is the only material paid-content difference established between the two editions, so it is the feature that should drive the decision rather than the presence of Update 2.0.
If you are undecided
Buying Standard first preserves access to the free update path. You can then compare the platform’s separate expansion offer with the price and terms of Ultimate. The exact upgrade route is not universal: storefronts can present a standalone expansion, a bundle, or another SKU, and the availability of a discounted upgrade can change.
Existing owners: do you need to buy Ultimate?
You already own Standard
You do not need to repurchase the base game to receive Update 2.0 on a supported PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S copy. Your decision is whether to add Phantom Liberty. Look for the expansion sold for your same platform and account ecosystem, then compare its current terms with any Ultimate bundle offered there.
You own a different platform version
Do not assume that an expansion purchase or Ultimate entitlement transfers between platforms. Check the store page while signed into the account that owns the base game and read the platform-specific licensing language. The edition, region and generation shown in the listing determine what you can install.

You are replacing a physical copy with a digital purchase
Confirm whether your existing save and entitlements are usable with the new format before buying. Physical and digital products can have different SKU descriptions, and a physical package may identify included content differently from a digital storefront tile.
Platform and packaging details to verify
Platforms named for the original Ultimate release
The original Ultimate release covered PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with physical copies available in selected markets. Availability is therefore not identical worldwide, and a title displayed in one country may not be stocked or packaged the same way in another.
Nintendo Switch 2 listings
A later publisher announcement added Nintendo Switch 2 availability. Because that announcement came after the original release, treat Switch 2 as a platform-specific listing rather than assuming every Ultimate package includes it. Check the current store page or box for the exact edition, included content and release format.

Physical versus digital
Digital listings normally show the entitlements attached to your platform account, while physical listings can vary by market and package design. Before buying a disc or cartridge, inspect the contents panel for the base game, Phantom Liberty, any required download or code, and the supported platform. Do not infer those details from a product photograph alone.

A step-by-step way to choose the right edition
- Identify your platform. Write down whether you are buying for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch 2, and use that platform’s official storefront or a retailer listing that names the same platform.
- Check the edition name and contents. The listing should explicitly say “Ultimate” and identify Phantom Liberty if the expansion is included. If it says only “Standard,” “base game” or Cyberpunk 2077 without expansion language, treat it as the base game until confirmed otherwise.
- Decide whether you need the paid expansion now. Choose Standard for the base game alone; choose Ultimate when you want Phantom Liberty in the same purchase.
- Separate free updates from paid content. If Update 2.0 is the reason you are considering Ultimate, stop and verify your platform: supported Standard owners receive that update without Ultimate.
- Compare the live purchase routes. If you already own Standard, compare the current standalone expansion offer with an Ultimate bundle. Record the region, currency, platform and whether the offer is digital or physical.
- Read the final SKU details. Confirm stock, packaging, included codes or downloads, account requirements and any upgrade language immediately before payment. These details can change by retailer and region.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating Update 2.0 as proof that Ultimate is required
Update 2.0 is free for supported base-game owners. Buying Ultimate solely for the police, perk, vehicle-combat or cyberware changes would pay for an expansion you may not want.
Mistake: assuming every post-launch item is free
Free DLC and updates do not make Phantom Liberty free. The expansion remains the paid content that distinguishes Ultimate from Standard.
Mistake: assuming “Standard” has identical wording everywhere
Storefronts and retailers can use different labels. Use the contents list, not just the headline, to determine whether the expansion is present.
Mistake: ignoring region and format
A physical copy sold in one market may not match a digital SKU in another. Verify language, platform, stock, codes and region compatibility before ordering.
Mistake: expecting a universal upgrade discount
Upgrade terms are SKU- and platform-dependent. An existing owner may see a standalone expansion, a bundle or another offer; there is no single upgrade rule to apply to every store.
Which edition should you buy?
Choose Standard when
- You want the base campaign and are not ready to commit to Phantom Liberty.
- You are comfortable adding the expansion later if you decide you want it.
- You primarily want the free post-launch systems, including Update 2.0, on a supported platform.
Choose Ultimate when
- You want the base game and Phantom Liberty together.
- You are buying for the first time and prefer one clearly labeled package.
- The current bundle terms are better for you than buying the game and expansion separately.
Compare separately when
- You already own Standard.
- You are changing platform or format.
- The listing is a physical import, a regional SKU or a newly announced platform version.
Questions to answer on the product page before checkout
- Does the title or contents panel explicitly include Phantom Liberty?
- Is the product for your exact platform and hardware generation?
- Is it a digital license, a disc, a cartridge or a package containing a download code?
- Does your region match the store account or physical product region?
- If you already own Standard, is the offer an expansion, an Ultimate bundle or a different SKU?
- Are stock, price and upgrade terms current for your location?
Bottom line
Standard Edition gives you Cyberpunk 2077 without Phantom Liberty. Ultimate Edition is the all-in bundle: base game, Phantom Liberty, free DLC and free updates. Update 2.0 does not decide the purchase because supported Standard owners receive it free; the deciding question is whether you want the paid expansion and whether the specific platform and regional SKU delivers it on terms that suit you.
