What Cyberpunk 2077 is about
CD PROJEKT RED presents V as a player-defined cyberpunk mercenary climbing through Night City’s contract economy. The inciting job is to steal a one-of-a-kind implant connected to immortality. What begins as a score quickly becomes a personal emergency: V must find a way to survive while a powerful digital presence complicates V’s memories, decisions and sense of self.

The official game description stresses that players choose where, when and how to move through Night City, with decisions shaping the story and the people around V. That freedom is not cosmetic. Optional work can reveal information, build trust or open a different route toward the finale.
Night City is more than a backdrop
Night City is a corporate-ruled megalopolis of polished towers, crowded markets, gang-held streets and industrial edges. The Badlands stretch beyond the central districts, offering a harsher contrast to the city’s neon density. CD PROJEKT RED’s original announcement called it “the most violent and dangerous metropolis of the corporate-ruled future.”
Lead writer Tomasz Marchewka described the design decision directly: “Quite quickly, during pre-production of Cyberpunk 2077, we realized that Night City is going to be our main antagonist.” That idea explains why the city can feel like an active force even when no single villain is present. Corporations, gangs, law enforcement, media, money and technology all push V toward choices that benefit someone else.
Night City therefore creates pressure at two levels. V has immediate problems—money, contracts, danger and a failing body—while the surrounding systems ask what kind of person can survive inside them. A personal promise may conflict with a corporation’s order; loyalty to a friend may undermine a larger plan; a chance at safety may require giving up control.
How the story branches
Cyberpunk 2077 is not a linear film with one route between fixed scenes. It is a network of main missions, optional quests and relationship arcs that converge and diverge around V’s central crisis.
Lifepath background
At the beginning, you select a lifepath background for V. It gives V a distinct introduction and adds dialogue or context in later situations. Lifepath choices flavor the character; they do not lock you out of every other major storyline.

Main missions and side quests
Main jobs advance the immediate conflict, but side quests often supply the context that makes later decisions meaningful. Some optional chains introduce allies, expose a faction’s motives or give V information that changes how a final choice feels. Skipping side content does not make the game unwinnable, but it can leave fewer relationships and fewer routes available.

Relationships and alliances
Conversations are consequential when they change who trusts V, who will answer a call and which support network exists near the end. Romance is only one part of this system; friendship, professional respect and shared danger can matter just as much.
The point of no return
Near the end, the game warns you before entering a final sequence. Treat that warning as a real boundary. Make a manual save before proceeding if you want to explore other relationship quests or compare the outcomes created by earlier decisions. The game can return you to a pre-finale state for continued play in many routes, but the Tower epilogue added by Phantom Liberty is intentionally treated differently; the spoiler section explains that design choice.
The characters who carry the story
V
V is both protagonist and role-playing space. The game supplies the job, the city and the crisis, but you supply V’s priorities. The same event can read as a desperate bid for autonomy, a chance at recognition or a betrayal depending on the voice and choices you give V.
Johnny Silverhand
Johnny is a rockerboy and a digital presence whose conflict with V turns abstract questions about identity into an everyday problem. Their relationship changes with your responses. Johnny represents rebellion and legacy, but the game also asks whether a remembered legend has the right to overtake a living person.

Jackie Welles
Jackie is V’s early partner and an emotional baseline for the mercenary rise. His friendship gives the opening jobs human scale and shows what V is risking before the larger corporate and technological conflict takes over. His arc should be experienced in the game rather than summarized here.

Judy Álvarez, Panam Palmer, Goro Takemura and Rogue Amendiares
These major allies present different ideas of loyalty. Judy’s quests examine intimacy, solidarity and the cost of protecting a community. Panam’s storyline emphasizes chosen family, mutual aid and life outside the city’s corporate center. Takemura embodies institutional duty and the tension between personal honor and obedience. Rogue connects rebellion, memory and the weight of a long career. Their quests are optional context, not prerequisites for understanding the premise, but they can affect what support V has later.
Phantom Liberty’s cast
Phantom Liberty introduces a spy-thriller conflict in Dogtown. Solomon Reed is a NUSA secret agent; Songbird and Rosalind Myers are part of the political pressure surrounding the operation; Kurt Hansen rules Dogtown as an arms dealer and warlord. Their competing agendas add a different kind of uncertainty from the base game’s street-level contracts.
The themes behind the plot
The implant-centered crisis gives the game a concrete way to discuss identity. If memory, personality and experience can be copied or altered, what makes a person the same person? V’s conflict with Johnny makes that question immediate rather than philosophical.

V repeatedly weighs a longer life against autonomy, relationships and the kind of legacy that remains. The major tensions include:
- Survival versus autonomy: continuing to exist may require accepting help that limits V’s control.
- Personal relationships versus institutional power: friends and allies offer forms of loyalty that corporations and governments cannot replicate, but they also create obligations.
- A quiet life versus a legendary one: Night City rewards notoriety while quietly consuming the people who pursue it.
- Memory versus identity: Johnny makes the difference between being remembered and being yourself impossible to ignore.
Marchewka summarized the human scale of the story this way: “When you simplify it enough, it becomes a story about ourselves.” The science-fiction devices matter because they sharpen familiar fears about work, reputation, mortality and the stories people tell about who they are.
Where Phantom Liberty fits
Phantom Liberty is an expansion to V’s ongoing story, not a separate campaign with a new protagonist. It takes place in Dogtown, a walled-off district controlled by Kurt Hansen, and follows V’s involvement with NUSA agent Solomon Reed amid political and mercenary pressure.

The expansion adds new gigs and side quests alongside weapons, vehicles, clothing and cyberware. CD PROJEKT RED announced “over 100 new items (vehicles, weapons, clothing, and cyberware)” and a Relic skill tree. These additions expand how V can play, while the narrative branch gives the overall story another consequential direction.

Do you need to finish the base game first?
You need the base game to play Phantom Liberty, and the expansion assumes that V, Johnny and Night City are already the center of your story. You do not need to treat it as a replacement for the main campaign: it is designed to be experienced as part of the same V journey. For the clearest introduction, establish V in the base game first, then enter Dogtown when the expansion becomes available. If you are starting a new character, pay attention to the opening relationships and major choices before focusing on the expansion’s spy plot.
Playing the base game’s optional character arcs before committing to the expansion can also make its decisions easier to understand, because Phantom Liberty’s branch ultimately interacts with V’s larger survival dilemma rather than erasing it.
How many endings does Cyberpunk 2077 have?
There is no single number that captures every way players describe the endings. The game offers a family of conclusions built from the route you create through missions, relationships and final decisions. Guides may count major finale paths, sub-variations or epilogues differently, so a bare number can suggest more precision than the structure supports.
The useful answer is that the base game has multiple distinct routes, and Phantom Liberty adds a major branch that can unlock an additional conclusion for V’s overall story. The expansion’s ending is not a replacement for every base-game route; it is another possibility shaped by what you do in Dogtown and how you handle its competing loyalties.
Is there a true or best ending?
Cyberpunk 2077 does not designate one canonical “true ending” in the material covered here. Calling a route best is a matter of what you value: survival, independence, friendship, institutional stability or a lasting legend. Each conclusion tests the same central dilemma from a different angle.

That design also means a satisfying ending may depend on the choices you made long before the final warning. A route that feels hopeful for one version of V can feel like a loss for another. Instead of searching for a universal winner, consider which outcome fits the priorities you gave your character.
Spoilers: ending mechanics and the Tower epilogue
Stop here if you want to discover the final choices and character outcomes yourself. The finale is gated by a point-of-no-return sequence. Once you commit, the game resolves the path created by your previous missions, alliances and decisions. Phantom Liberty can open an additional conclusion for V, but it does not delete the other families of endings.
CD PROJEKT RED’s support explanation confirms that the Tower epilogue is intentionally final: “This is as designed. Players returning to the Point of No Return after The Tower ending would result in an uncanny narrative experience we wanted to avoid.” In that route, the game allows V’s story to simply end there rather than placing the character back before the final decision. Make a separate manual save before the point of no return if you want to preserve the option of exploring other routes.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition combines the base game, Phantom Liberty and the released updates. CD PROJEKT RED announced digital and physical versions for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, with physical distribution in select markets. Edition names and stock can vary by region, so check the platform listing before buying and confirm that Phantom Liberty is included rather than sold separately.
For PC streaming, CD PROJEKT RED lists GeForce NOW among the supported services for Phantom Liberty. Availability and catalog access can change by region and date, so verify the current service listing before relying on it.
A spoiler-safe way to approach the game
- Choose a V you can role-play. Lifepath and appearance set context, but your dialogue and decisions define the character.
- Follow optional quests when a relationship interests you. They provide the personal context that the main plot cannot supply on its own.
- Read the point-of-no-return warning literally. Create a manual save before entering the final sequence.
- Keep Phantom Liberty in the same continuity. Dogtown’s spy thriller adds a branch to V’s story; it is not a disconnected side campaign.
- Judge an ending by your priorities. The game gives you variations on survival, identity, loyalty and legacy rather than one officially correct answer.
Cyberpunk 2077’s story works because the city, the implant and the relationships all ask the same question in different forms: how much of yourself are you willing to trade for more time, more power or a name that outlives you?
