No official replacement for V has been announced in the reviewed CD PROJEKT RED materials. The follow-up is now called Cyberpunk 2 (previously Project Orion), but the publisher has not named its protagonist. Fan discussions show some players arguing for a new lead and others hoping V returns; they do not establish what the sequel will do or what fans broadly prefer.
What CD PROJEKT RED has confirmed about the sequel
CD PROJEKT RED described Project Orion as the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077 and said in February 2024 that it was in early development at its North American studio. On May 28, 2025, the publisher said the project had completed its conceptual phase and moved into preproduction, identifying it as Cyberpunk 2, formerly Project Orion. CD PROJEKT RED’s February 2024 update and May 2025 development update describe the project’s status, not its lead character.
CD PROJEKT RED’s June 2024 description calls the next mainline game story-rich and morally ambiguous, set in the dark-future world, and says it will use Unreal Engine 5 visuals. It does not identify a protagonist. The publisher’s announcement also reported that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold more than 25 million copies and received more than 200 awards as of June 2024. Those figures concern the existing game, not sequel interest or support for a particular character.
Has V been replaced by an official new protagonist?
No. The official materials reviewed do not name V, a new protagonist, or anyone else as the sequel’s lead. The claim that CD PROJEKT RED has officially named V’s replacement is therefore unsupported by those announcements. That is different from proving V will not appear: the publisher’s silence does not settle whether V, Johnny Silverhand, or another familiar character will return in any capacity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cyberpunk 2077 has multiple endings, which makes a direct continuation a story-design challenge, but it does not rule out a return for V. Without an official announcement, any claim about how the sequel handles those outcomes—or who players will control—remains speculation.
Why some fans want a new lead and others want V back
Two Reddit discussions illustrate different individual preferences: one commenter favors a new playable main character, while another thread discusses whether V could return. They are examples of community conversation, not a representative survey. There is no cited statistic establishing how players divide between these options, so claims that fans are evenly split or that one preference dominates are not supported.

The case for a new protagonist
- A different lead could give the sequel a fresh point of view and make it easier to follow without resolving every possible outcome of V’s story.
- Players who want a new character could welcome a chance to inhabit a different life in Night City rather than continue with a customized protagonist they consider finished.
The case for V’s return
- Returning to V could create a direct emotional connection to the first game for players who want more time with their character.
- A sequel could revisit V without necessarily making the same assumptions about every player’s ending—but how it might do so has not been announced.
These are story-design tradeoffs, not confirmed plans. The fan threads show that both ideas come up; they cannot tell readers which direction the studio has chosen.

No. PC Gamer reported that Reeves, who played Johnny Silverhand, said, “Absolutely, I’d love to play Johnny Silverhand again.” That expresses the actor’s willingness, not a casting announcement or confirmation that Johnny—or V—will be in Cyberpunk 2. PC Gamer’s report makes that distinction clear.
