Phantom Liberty adds a separate set of street-story gigs in Dogtown. Examples listed in the reference include Dogtown Saints, The Man Who Killed Jason Foreman, Prototype in the Scraper, Heaviest of Hearts, Roads to Redemption, Spy in the Jungle, Waiting for Dodger, Treating Symptoms and Talent Academy. These are official missions integrated into the expansion’s map, progression and save-game logic.
The practical difference is not simply length. Official jobs can trigger relationships, unlock later missions, alter phone conversations and feed into endings or district progression. Its documented examples—Negative Balance, Dead Ringer and Acceptable Loss—show the range of systems a determined author can combine. Those are capabilities of the projects and tools that document them, not a promise that every download has all of those features. A small quest may contain only text and a marker; a high-effort project may feel closer to a compact expansion.
Presentation and writing
Official missions have CDPR’s established character models, cinematic direction, localization pipeline and audio mix. A well-made mod can use voiced dialogue, lip-sync and holocall video, but production quality varies with the creator, available assets and the chosen framework. Read the mission description and screenshots before assuming a mod is fully voiced or professionally localized.
Choices and consequences
Some documented quest projects expose branching decisions, payout changes or wanted-level consequences. That can create replay value in a single mission. Official side jobs provide a broader, authored spread of structures: relationship stories, investigations, combat set pieces and fixer gigs that interact with the base game’s progression. A mod may offer deeper branching in one quest while still having less long-term impact on the rest of V’s campaign.

CD PROJEKT RED defines REDmod as a free DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 that adds integrated support for installing and loading mods and provides tools for creating them. - Record your environment. Note the exact game patch, whether Phantom Liberty is installed, your store edition and your current mod list. Compatibility notes often distinguish the base game from the expansion.
- Install the free REDmod DLC. Add REDmod through your platform’s downloadable-content interface, then launch the game once so the launcher recognizes it.
- Read the mod’s requirements. Check for REDmod, ArchiveXL, redscript or other named dependencies. Install the versions the author lists; do not assume the newest release is always compatible.
- Back up saves and close the game. Keep an unmodded save outside the active playthrough. A quest mod can leave markers or quest states in a save even after the files are removed.
- Copy the mod to the correct location. For a REDmod package, place its folder under
Cyberpunk 2077\mods, preserving the author’s directory structure. Do not nest the actual mod folder inside an extra duplicate folder created by an archive extractor. - Enable it. Use REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy’s mod controls when available. Some distribution methods use a launcher parameter or a separate manager; use only the method documented by the author.
- Start a controlled test. Load a recent backup save, verify that the expected journal entry or map marker appears, and play for a few minutes before committing to your main save.
- Document the working state. Keep a text note containing the mod version, dependencies and game patch. This makes rollback much faster after an update.
Pre-install checklist
- Patch match: the mod page should mention your current game version. A project tested for 2.0 may not be safe on a later patch.
- Phantom Liberty requirement: some quests or frameworks require the expansion; others target the base game only.
- Dependency chain: verify REDmod, ArchiveXL, redscript and any other libraries named by the author.
- Install path: confirm the folder is the real game directory, not a shortcut, backup or cloud-synchronized copy.
- Update date: an old project may still work, but an author’s recent compatibility note is stronger evidence.
- Conflict risk: avoid testing several mods that alter the same quest, NPC, archive or map resources at the same time.
- Save strategy: use a separate playthrough or backup before a mod adds its first quest state.
Common failure modes and recovery
The quest does not appear
First confirm that the mod is enabled and that every dependency loaded. Check whether the mission starts only after a particular level, district event or phone call. If the author specifies a trigger, meet that condition on a test save rather than assuming the marker should appear immediately.
The game crashes on launch
Disable the newest mod and its dependencies, then launch with the remaining list. If the crash disappears, reinstall the removed files using the author’s documented versions. Do not delete random files from the game directory while trying to diagnose a dependency problem; keep a clean baseline and add components back one at a time.
A patch breaks an active quest
Stop updating the modded playthrough until the author posts compatibility guidance. Restore the unmodded backup if the save will not load, and avoid continuing the same save with half of the dependency chain removed. Because CDPR does not maintain community mods, the creator’s update notes are the appropriate support channel.

Markers, dialogue or rewards are missing
This usually points to a wrong folder structure, a missing framework or a conflict with another quest modification. Recheck the archive’s top-level folder, confirm the required libraries are enabled, and test with only the quest mod and its stated dependencies.
Which route is right for you?
Choose vanilla-first when stability is the priority
Play the official side jobs and gigs before modding if you want a clean progression path, predictable updates, achievements tied to the supported build or the least troubleshooting. This route also gives you the reference point needed to judge whether a community quest actually feels integrated rather than merely borrowing the game’s setting.
Choose a modded route when you want more stories
Install quest mods after your core playthrough—or on a separate character—if you are comfortable checking dependencies, reading changelogs and restoring backups. Start with one actively maintained project, confirm its patch and Phantom Liberty requirements, and add other frameworks only when a quest explicitly needs them.

Keep one unmodded save for official content and a second profile for experiments. Finish a mod’s story before removing it, because deleting quest files mid-arc can leave persistent journal or world states. When a major game update arrives, play the supported build until the authors of your installed projects confirm compatibility.
The practical verdict
Official side jobs and gigs remain the dependable baseline: they are authored for the game’s progression, supported through the normal release path and consistent in presentation. Quest mods are the way to extend Night City beyond that baseline, with the potential for custom NPCs, branching choices, voiced scenes and unusual systems that official content does not provide in unlimited supply. The trade is clear—community authors control the quality and support, and every update can turn a working dependency chain into a troubleshooting task.
