This is a comparison of PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. The published console mode information cited here is from 2022, and the PC targets are from 2023; they are manufacturer guidance rather than fresh independent tests.

Quick recommendation
- Choose PC if you already have hardware near your target resolution and want adjustable settings, high-refresh output, or optional ray tracing.
- Choose PS5 if you want a straightforward current-generation console version and already use PlayStation.
- Choose Xbox Series X if you are in the Xbox ecosystem and want the more powerful Xbox model.
- Choose Xbox Series S when price and size matter most, accepting less hardware headroom and the limitations of its documented mode support.
- Choose Ultimate Edition when you want Phantom Liberty and its local price is lower than buying the base game and expansion separately.
There is no universal “best” copy. Your existing hardware, preferred store, target image quality, and interest in the expansion determine the sensible purchase.

Standard game
The base game is the required starting point for the main campaign. It has received substantial free updates. CD PROJEKT RED says the July 2025 Update 2.3 is free to owners of the base game on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, among other newly listed platforms.

Phantom Liberty
Phantom Liberty is an expansion, not a standalone game. CD PROJEKT RED’s purchase page explicitly says: “Cyberpunk 2077 is required to play Phantom Liberty.” Buying the expansion alone therefore does not replace the base game.
Ultimate Edition
The announced Ultimate Edition combines the base game, free downloadable content, updates available at the time of announcement, and Phantom Liberty. It was announced for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, digitally worldwide and physically in selected markets. Physical availability is not universal, so verify the platform, region, stock, and included content on the listing you are considering.
For a new player who wants the complete current package, Ultimate is usually the simplest option. For someone who already owns the base game, compare the expansion’s standalone price with any upgrade or bundle offer in the local store; do not pay twice for content you already have.
PC: the flexible option, if your hardware is suitable
PC is the only choice here that lets you tune presets, resolution, image reconstruction, ray tracing, and frame-rate targets around your own system. That flexibility is valuable, but it also makes the purchase decision depend on your exact CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, and monitor.

The following are CD PROJEKT RED’s 2023 non-ray-tracing targets. They are not guarantees: the publisher says results vary with hardware and software, graphics settings, and output resolution.

These rows describe the publisher’s test targets, not a promise that every scene will hold the listed frame rate. Ray-traced Overdrive is substantially more demanding than the non-ray-traced presets; the cited RTX 4080 result also used DLSS Frame Generation, so it should not be read as a native-rendering requirement.

SSD requirement and older systems
With Update 2.0, CD PROJEKT RED made an SSD a requirement and advised against HDD use because the game’s streaming system needs higher bandwidth. A machine that technically meets an older minimum may still provide a poor experience if the game is installed on a hard disk.

In its June 11, 2023 requirements announcement, the publisher said the game would not necessarily stop working on previous minimum configurations, but that it would discontinue active support and stop testing those configurations after the next base-game update. Treat the table above as the relevant planning reference rather than assuming old requirements will receive ongoing validation.
How to decide on PC
- Identify your monitor or TV resolution and the frame rate you actually want.
- Compare your CPU, GPU, RAM, and available SSD space with the closest published target.
- Decide whether ray tracing is important. If it is not, compare against the non-ray-tracing rows; if it is, budget considerable GPU headroom and use the publisher’s stated upscaling assumptions.
- Leave extra storage capacity beyond the listed 70 GB so updates and the operating system are not competing for the last free space.
- If your system falls between rows, start with a conservative preset and adjust resolution and effects rather than assuming the highest target will be stable.
PlayStation 5: the simplest current PlayStation route
PS5 has a dedicated current-generation version and avoids the compatibility questions that come with older hardware. The publisher’s 2022 next-generation specification documented both a Performance mode and a Ray Tracing mode for PS5. Because that specification is dated, use it as product guidance rather than a current independent measurement; patches may change behavior and image quality.
PS5 is a strong fit when you already own the console, prefer controller play from the sofa, and do not want to tune PC settings. Check the store listing in your region before buying, especially when choosing between the base game, expansion, and Ultimate bundle.
Xbox Series X and Series S: two different hardware decisions
Xbox Series X
The 2022 publisher specification listed Performance and Ray Tracing modes for Xbox Series X, paralleling the documented PS5 mode choices. Series X is the Xbox option for buyers who want more hardware capacity and already have a 4K display or an established Xbox library.
Xbox Series S
The same 2022 specification did not list a graphics-mode selection for Xbox Series S. That does not mean the game is unavailable or unplayable; it means you should not assume Series X-style mode choice from the older document. Series S is most compelling when its lower price and compact design outweigh the value of additional resolution or graphics options.

For either Xbox model, confirm the exact edition and expansion contents in the current regional store. The console family name alone does not tell you whether a listing includes Phantom Liberty.
Updates, old consoles, and version support
Update 2.3 materials published in July 2025 list PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, as well as Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac, and state that the update is free for base-game owners. The cited page does not list PS4 or Xbox One. Do not assume those older editions receive the same current updates or feature set; verify support for an older copy before buying it second-hand or expecting feature parity.
This distinction matters more than a box’s original release date. A current-generation edition is the safer purchase for someone starting now and wanting ongoing updates.

- Write down the current local price of the base game on your chosen platform.
- Add the local price of Phantom Liberty if purchased separately.
- Compare that total with the platform-specific Ultimate Edition listing.
- Check whether a discount applies only to new purchasers, and confirm that the bundle contains the platform version you use.
Ultimate is convenience rather than a different game engine: its value is having the base game, free DLC, and expansion in one purchase. Existing owners should look for an expansion or upgrade listing to avoid rebuying the base game.

CD PROJEKT RED’s Patch 2.13 notes say cross progression continues to function despite version-number differences between PC and console. That is helpful if you move between supported systems, but the cited notes do not spell out every platform pairing, account-linking step, or save condition. Before switching devices, follow the current support instructions, enable the required account features, and keep a backup of important saves. Do not treat the statement as proof that every combination of storefronts or editions shares saves automatically.
Store, region, and format checks before paying
- Confirm that the listing is for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S as intended; console generations are not interchangeable assumptions.
- Select your actual country or region in the publisher’s purchase flow because available stores and formats vary.
- For a physical Ultimate Edition, verify local stock and contents; the announcement covered selected markets, not every country.
- Check whether your chosen listing includes Phantom Liberty rather than presuming that “complete” or “ultimate” wording means the same thing everywhere.
- Check the installation drive on PC and use an SSD.
Decision examples
You own a modern gaming PC and a 1440p monitor
PC is the natural choice if your GPU and CPU are near the 1080p High or 2160p Ultra guidance and you value adjustable settings. Buy Ultimate only if you want the expansion; otherwise the base game leaves the expansion as a later decision.

You own a PS5 and no gaming PC
Buy the PS5 edition. The cost of building or upgrading a PC would dominate any theoretical graphics advantage. Compare the local base-plus-expansion total with Ultimate at checkout.
You own an Xbox Series S and are choosing between consoles
Use Series S if affordability and size are your priorities. Move to Series X only if its additional hardware capacity and documented mode options justify the extra hardware cost for your display and preferences.
You want to play on two supported devices
Cross progression may let you continue between PC and console despite version-number differences, but verify current account and pairing requirements before relying on it.
