Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition runs on Nintendo Switch 2 with two official graphics modes. Quality mode is specified at 30 FPS and 1080p in both TV and handheld play. Performance mode targets up to 40 FPS at 1080p on a TV and 720p in handheld mode, with handheld VRR for smoother refresh behavior. These are developer targets rather than a promise that every scene remains at the maximum frame rate.
Plan for at least 60.5 GB of free space for a digital installation, plus room for updates and optional language packs. The physical release uses a 64 GB game card and runs the game directly from that card, but updates and language packs still need internal storage or a Nintendo Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card. Joy-Con 2 enables gyro, motion, touch and mouse features; the Switch 2 Pro Controller supports conventional play in every mode.

Performance modes and what to expect
CD PROJEKT RED’s technical-support documentation lists two frame-rate modes in the game’s Settings: Quality and Performance. The specifications describe target output for each mode, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that every busy street, combat encounter or streaming transition will hold the ceiling continuously.
| Mode | TV mode | Handheld mode | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | 30 FPS at 1080p | 30 FPS at 1080p | Prioritizes the higher stated resolution in both play styles and a consistent 30-FPS presentation. |
| Performance | Targets up to 40 FPS at 1080p | Targets up to 40 FPS at 720p; handheld VRR is used | Prioritizes responsiveness, especially when playing handheld, while accepting the lower handheld resolution target. |
Quality mode
Quality is the straightforward choice when you want the same stated 1080p target whether the console is docked or being used as a handheld. Its 30-FPS target is lower than Performance mode’s ceiling, but it avoids the 720p handheld target specified for Performance mode.

Performance mode
Performance targets up to 40 FPS. On a TV, the target is 1080p; in handheld mode, it is 720p. The handheld mode uses variable refresh rate (VRR), which can make changes in frame delivery appear smoother than they would on a fixed-refresh display. VRR does not turn the game into a locked 40-FPS experience: it allows the display to follow supported refresh changes more gracefully when the frame rate varies.
How to choose
- Open the game’s in-game Settings menu.
- Find the frame-rate mode setting and select Quality or Performance.
- Use Quality if the stated 1080p presentation in handheld matters more than responsiveness.
- Use Performance if faster response and the possibility of up to 40 FPS matter more, particularly in handheld mode.
- Play for several minutes in the mode you selected, including driving and combat, before deciding whether the trade-off suits you. The official figures are targets, not measurements of every situation.
Controls: Joy-Con 2, touch, motion and mouse input
Nintendo lists touch-screen, gyro, motion and mouse support for the Switch 2 version. These features are additions to the normal controller layout, not requirements for completing the game.
Touch-screen menus
In handheld or tabletop play, you can tap, swipe and pinch in Inventory, Perks, Map and other menus. Touch input is therefore most useful for navigation and inspection rather than as a replacement for every combat control.

Gyro and motion actions
Separated Joy-Con 2 controllers can use motion gestures for actions such as attacking, dodging and using health items. Nintendo’s feature description specifically calls out these actions, while CD PROJEKT RED’s developer blog describes rolling the left Joy-Con 2 to dodge and using motion patterns for healing and dodging.
The studio’s gameplay technical design expert Filip Downar said the design philosophy was “to do it but not force it.” In practice, that means motion mechanics are available when they improve a situation, while conventional controls remain viable. Downar also explained that the team had to create patterns that matched player expectations for a system no one had used before, and that too many patterns could become confusing.
Detached Joy-Con 2 mouse mode
The right Joy-Con 2 can be detached and placed on its side to use its mouse sensor. This is a distinct feature from gyro aiming: it uses the controller’s position on a surface for mouse-style pointing. You need the Joy-Con 2 hardware in the appropriate detached configuration; a Pro Controller cannot reproduce this sensor mode.

Conventional controller play
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller works in any play mode, including TV, tabletop and handheld setups where a compatible wireless controller is being used. It is the practical choice if you want a familiar two-stick layout without motion or mouse input. It does not provide the detached Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor, so selecting it means giving up that particular feature rather than losing the game’s standard controls.
What the new mechanics mean for play
Publishing Tech QA Analyst Jakub Smodrzak said the team had no existing test cases for the new movement mechanics because the Switch 2 version required entirely new interactions for a game the studio already knew well. That statement describes the development and quality-assurance process; it is not an independent performance test. Treat the motion and mouse options as optional control paths and choose the one that feels predictable to you.
Storage requirements and installation formats
Nintendo’s 2025 eShop listing specifies 60.5 GB of required space for the Switch 2 version. CD PROJEKT RED’s support information describes the game as approximately 59 GB. Those figures come from different official contexts and measurements, so they are not a contradiction. For planning, use Nintendo’s larger 60.5-GB figure and leave additional free space for updates and language packs.

| Purchase format | Where the main game resides | Space you should reserve | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital eShop | Internal console storage or a Nintendo Switch 2-compatible microSD Express card | At least 60.5 GB, plus headroom | Nintendo warns that more or less free space than the listed amount may be required during installation. |
| Physical edition | Runs directly from the 64 GB game card | Free space for updates and any language packs you download | The card reduces the need for a full digital install, but it does not eliminate later storage requirements. |
Digital buyers
A digital copy can be installed to the console’s internal storage or to a microSD Express card. Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards; do not assume that an older, non-Express card is the right expansion format for this console. Check the card’s capacity and compatibility before starting a large download.
Physical buyers
The physical release is a 64 GB game card, and CD PROJEKT RED states that the physical version runs directly from the game card. You still need available internal or microSD Express storage for future updates and for additional language packs. Buying the cartridge is therefore not the same as needing zero free storage.
Why extra headroom matters
Both digital and physical versions can receive updates. CD PROJEKT RED also warns that optional language packs add to the final installed size. Nintendo’s eShop notice says installation may require more or less free space than the displayed amount. A safe buying decision is to reserve at least 60.5 GB for a digital copy and keep more space available before installing patches or language files.

What is included in the Ultimate Edition
The Switch 2 release is Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. It includes the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion, making it the complete package for this platform rather than a base-game-only edition. The same storage considerations apply: updates and optional language packs can increase the space required after purchase.
Recommended setup for each type of player
For a TV-focused player
- Start with Quality if you want the stated 1080p output and a 30-FPS presentation.
- Try Performance if responsiveness is more important; its TV target is up to 40 FPS at 1080p.
- Use a Pro Controller for conventional controls, or separated Joy-Con 2 if you want motion and mouse options available.
For a handheld-focused player
- Choose Quality for the stated 1080p handheld target.
- Choose Performance for the up-to-40-FPS target at 720p and handheld VRR.
- Keep Joy-Con 2 attached for touch menus, or separate the controllers when you want motion gestures or mouse mode.
For a digital purchase
- Check available internal storage before buying or beginning the download.
- If internal space is insufficient, install to a compatible microSD Express card.
- Reserve at least 60.5 GB for the initial requirement and leave additional room for patches and language packs.
For a physical purchase
- Insert the 64 GB game card and launch from the card.
- Keep internal or microSD Express storage free for updates.
- Download only the language packs you need if storage is limited.
Troubleshooting common expectations
“I selected Performance but do not always see 40 FPS.”
The published wording is “targets up to 40 FPS,” not “locked at 40 FPS.” Scene complexity, streaming and other workload changes can affect frame delivery. Confirm that Performance is selected in the game’s Settings, then judge the mode by responsiveness and overall presentation rather than expecting the maximum in every scene.
“The eShop says 60.5 GB, but another official page says 59 GB.”
Use the eShop’s 60.5-GB requirement when planning space. The approximately 59-GB description is a separate publisher estimate, while Nintendo’s figure is the installation requirement shown for its listing. Updates and language packs can raise the final total beyond either baseline.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“The cartridge is inserted, but the console still asks for storage.”
That is expected when an update or additional language pack must be downloaded. The physical game runs from the 64 GB card, but those extra files are stored internally or on a microSD Express card.
“I am using a Pro Controller and cannot activate mouse mode.”
Mouse mode depends on the detached right Joy-Con 2 and its mouse sensor. The Pro Controller supports conventional play in every mode but does not include that detached-controller feature.
Known limits of the published specifications
Official documentation provides mode targets, resolution targets, storage figures and supported input features. It does not provide an independent average battery-runtime figure for Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2. Battery life will vary with display brightness, wireless use, system conditions and play settings, so no single runtime number should be treated as established for this game.
