Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn PC, the reliable way to install Cyberpunk 2077 mods is to preserve a clean rollback point, install the current framework dependencies first, and deploy through Vortex or a carefully documented manual process. Legacy archive mods and REDmod mods use different folders, but both ultimately follow predictable ASCII-alphabetical rules. Install one small group at a time, test the game after each deployment, and keep the launcher involved after REDmod changes.
This guide reflects CD PROJEKT RED and Vortex documentation available on October 18, 2026. Framework compatibility can change with a game patch, so check the individual mod’s Requirements tab and file version immediately before installing it.

What you need before installing any mod
This is a PC guide. Console editions do not use the Windows mod folders or the community frameworks described here. You need an updated game installation, access to the launcher or platform used to start the game, and enough free space for downloaded archives plus Vortex’s staging area if you choose a mod manager.
- Confirm the game build. Record the build number and date before changing files. A framework that worked on one patch may need an update after another.
- Use a clean starting point. If the game already has unexplained errors, verify or repair the installation through your store client before adding mods.
- Obtain files from the mod author’s page. Read the Requirements tab, installation notes, supported game versions, and known conflicts for every mod. CD PROJEKT RED states that community mods are not reviewed by the company.
- Decide on one management method. Vortex gives you staging, notifications, deployment tracking, and easier removal. Manual installation gives direct folder control but makes you responsible for finding and removing every file.
Do not treat a list of popular frameworks as a universal compatibility guarantee. Install only the dependencies a specific mod requires, while recognizing that many current mods use the same core stack.
#1 Best Overall
Back up a known-good modded state first
Back up before the first installation and again before every game or framework update. Store the copies outside the Cyberpunk 2077 directory so a verification, uninstall, or accidental deletion cannot remove them with the game files.
What to copy
- Your current save files.
- Downloaded mod archives, including the exact versions you installed.
- Configuration folders changed by mods or by your framework setup.
- Any custom deployment or load-order notes.
- A text record of the game build, framework versions, renamed archives, and the date of the backup.
Give each backup a useful label such as CP2077-build-[build]-2026-10-18; variable-style text is shown as a label, not a command. The important part is that you can tell which saves belong with which mod state. Keeping the original archives matters because a later download may silently contain a different release.
Vortex or manual installation?
CD PROJEKT RED’s modding support directs players toward Nexus Mods and Vortex for managed installation. You can still install files manually, but the trade-off is bookkeeping rather than a different mod format.

| Decision point | Vortex | Manual workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Dependency visibility | Mod pages and Vortex notifications make missing requirements easier to spot, although you must still read the Requirements tab. | You must inspect each archive and track every prerequisite yourself. |
| Deployment and rollback | Separate staging, enable/disable controls, and deployment tracking make removal and re-deployment faster. | Removal means locating every installed file and restoring overwritten files from a backup. |
| Conflict and load-order control | Rules, notifications, and recorded file changes provide an audit trail; archive ordering still follows the game’s rules. | You control names and folders directly, but you must document each rename and conflict decision. |
| File-placement auditing | The installed mod remains represented in the manager and can be redeployed. | The game folders show the final files directly, but there is no automatic inventory of what you copied. |
| Recovery after an update | Re-enable compatible versions, redeploy, and review notifications. | Reinstall known-compatible archives and undo obsolete files manually. |
Whichever method you choose, do not mix undocumented copies with a managed deployment. If you manually place a file after Vortex has deployed a mod, your later troubleshooting record will no longer describe the actual installation.

Set up Vortex correctly
Place the staging folder on the right drive
Put Vortex’s staging folder on the same physical drive as the game, but in a separate directory outside the game installation. This lets Vortex use hardlink deployment without making the staging area part of the game directory. A staging folder inside the game folder is harder to audit and easier to damage during a repair or uninstall.
Use the four deployment stages
- Download: obtain the mod archive and keep the original file.
- Install: in Vortex’s Mods section, drag the archive into the window if necessary and click Install.
- Enable: activate the installed mod only after its requirements are present.
- Deploy: apply the enabled state to the game directory using hardlinks.
Resolve red or orange Vortex notifications before launching. A notification can indicate a missing dependency, a file conflict, or a deployment problem; ignoring it removes the most useful diagnostic information you have at this stage.
Install the core frameworks in dependency order
The current Vortex guide identifies these commonly required foundations: Cyber Engine Tweaks (CET), RED4ext, redscript, ArchiveXL, TweakXL, and Codeware. A mod may require only one or two of them, but installing a dependent mod first can produce a startup failure or an apparently missing feature.
Recommended sequence
- Install Cyber Engine Tweaks (CET) if a mod lists it as a requirement. CET supplies the in-game scripting and overlay environment used by many utility and gameplay projects.
- Install RED4ext when required. It provides the modern extension layer used by many native-code mods and performs the functionality that older instructions may attribute to
cybercmd. - Install redscript for mods that compile or run redscript code.
- Install ArchiveXL for mods that add or extend archive resources.
- Install TweakXL for mods that edit the game’s tweak database through that framework.
- Install Codeware when a mod lists it as a dependency.
This is a dependency sequence, not a universal runtime load-order command. A mod page’s Requirements tab overrides a generic checklist. Some older pages still mention cybercmd; the current Vortex guidance says RED4ext supplies that functionality and more, so do not add an obsolete tool merely because an old description names it.

Perform a framework-only smoke test
After deploying the frameworks, launch with no content mods enabled. The game should reach the main menu. CET’s overlay-key prompt is a practical smoke check documented by the Vortex guide: if the prompt appears, CET has loaded far enough to respond in-game. Close the game and fix any red or orange Vortex notification before proceeding.
Know the two mod formats and their folders
| Format | Folder | How it is activated | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| REDmod content | Cyberpunk 2077mods<name> |
Deploy through Vortex, then enable through REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy after the free REDmod DLC is installed. | REDmod deployment compiles scripts, tweaks, and custom sounds into the modded game state. |
| Legacy archive content | Cyberpunk 2077archivepcmod<name>.archive |
Place or deploy the archive; it does not appear in the REDmod menu. | Legacy archives remain supported, but REDmod cannot manage their load order. |
The official support information says Epic installs REDmod automatically for game version 1.6 or later. On other platforms, install the free REDmod DLC when the mod requires it, then use the platform’s documented launcher path. A REDmod folder is not interchangeable with a legacy .archive file: putting the wrong format in the wrong directory will not convert it.
Install content mods incrementally
Once the framework-only launch succeeds, add gameplay, appearance, user-interface, and quest mods one at a time or in small, related batches.
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the mod’s Requirements tab and install any missing framework first.
- Inspect the archive’s top-level folders before installing. Confirm that its contents correspond to either the REDmod folder or the legacy archive folder described above.
- Install and enable the mod in Vortex, or copy only the documented files during a manual installation.
- Deploy after each change. For REDmod content, activate it through the launcher or platform integration rather than assuming the files are immediately compiled.
- Launch and test the feature you changed. For example, open the affected menu for a UI mod or visit the relevant location for a quest mod.
- Record the mod version, game build, and any archive or folder name you changed.
Small batches make failures diagnosable. If a crash appears after six unrelated mods, you have to test six variables; if it appears after one, removal identifies the likely cause quickly.

How Cyberpunk 2077 load order actually works
Legacy archives
Files in archive/pc/mod load in ASCII-alphabetical order. The characters in the archive filename therefore affect which file is encountered first. Renaming an archive is a deliberate load-order intervention, not a cosmetic change.
REDmod folders
Folders in Cyberpunk 2077/mods load strictly after the legacy archive directory, and REDmod folders are also processed in ASCII-alphabetical order. In other words, legacy archives load before REDmods; installing a REDmod does not place it between two legacy archives.
What happens during a conflict
The REDmod usage documentation states that when files conflict, the first mod to change a file wins under the documented REDmod rules. Do not assume that the last folder alphabetically automatically overrides an earlier file. Determine which mod supplies the conflicting resource, then use the author’s compatibility instructions or a deliberate rename if a different order is required.

Using modlist.txt
The load-order guide documents modlist.txt as an explicit mechanism for ordering archive files. It also warns that changing this file has effects beyond a simple drag-and-drop reorder. Use it only when you understand the conflict, keep a copy of the original, and record the change in your load-order notes. A mod’s dependency requirements still come first; an ordering file cannot replace a missing framework.

REDmod deployment and launch rules
After installing or changing REDmod content, deploy and activate the change before testing. The direct launch form Cyberpunk2077.exe -modded skips initialization that should occur after a new REDmod installation. Use the launcher or deployment path after a new install or a REDmod update, then start the game normally through that path.
If a REDmod appears in its folder but has no effect, check three things in order: whether the free REDmod DLC is installed where required, whether the mod is enabled in the launcher or platform integration, and whether Vortex has deployed the current version. Legacy archives will not appear in the REDmod menu, so their absence there is normal.
Troubleshoot a failed launch or missing feature
The game fails immediately after adding a mod
- Disable the most recently added mod and deploy again.
- Check its Requirements tab against the installed framework versions.
- Look for a red or orange Vortex notification indicating a conflict or deployment failure.
- Launch with only the core frameworks. If that works, re-enable content mods in small groups until the failing group is identified.
A REDmod change is not visible
- Confirm the content is in
Cyberpunk 2077mods<name>, not in the legacy archive directory. - Deploy, then activate through REDlauncher or GOG Galaxy as applicable.
- Do not use a direct
-moddedlaunch immediately after installing REDmod; use the initialization path first.
A legacy archive conflict persists
- Verify that both files are in
archivepcmod. - Compare their ASCII filenames and consult the mod authors’ conflict notes.
- If a rename is appropriate, change one name deliberately, test it, and write the old and new names in your notes.
- Use
modlist.txtonly when the documented ordering mechanism is necessary and understood.
REDmod cache appears corrupted
CD PROJEKT RED’s technical guidance recommends either deleting the contents of r6/cache/modded, or uninstalling the problem mod, launching once, closing the game, reinstalling the mod, and relaunching so the cache rebuilds. Back up your known-good state before doing this, and redeploy the intended mod set afterward.
Updating the game or frameworks safely
- Back up saves, downloaded archives, configuration folders, and load-order notes.
- Record the current game build and every framework version.
- Allow the game update to complete, then check each framework and content mod for compatibility with the new build.
- Do not re-enable every old mod at once. Start with the core frameworks, deploy, and perform the smoke test.
- Add content mods in small batches, testing after each deployment.
- If a framework is not yet compatible, keep the corresponding mod disabled rather than forcing a launch with an unknown combination.
Preserving the old archives and notes lets you restore the previous mod state if an update breaks compatibility. Saves can depend on modded content, so keep the matching game build and mod inventory with each backup rather than copying saves into an unrelated setup.
Practical checklist
- Game build and backup date recorded.
- Saves, archives, configurations, and load-order notes copied outside the game directory.
- Vortex staging folder on the same drive as the game but outside its installation directory.
- Hardlink deployment selected.
- Each mod’s Requirements tab checked immediately before installation.
- Core frameworks installed before dependent mods.
- Framework-only launch succeeds and CET responds if required.
- REDmod content placed under
Cyberpunk 2077modsand legacy archives underarchivepcmod. - Deployment and launcher activation performed after every REDmod change.
- Archive or folder renames documented.
- Direct
-moddedlaunch avoided immediately after a new REDmod installation. - Rollback procedure and known-good backup available before experimenting.
The safest installation is not the one with the most mods; it is the one whose dependencies, deployment state, ordering decisions, and recovery path you can explain. Community files are not reviewed or maintained by CD PROJEKT RED, so compatibility checking remains the responsibility of the mod author and player.
