Cyberpunk 2077 is currently best played on PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S. Those platforms receive the current game updates and support the Phantom Liberty expansion. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One still run the base campaign, but they stopped receiving new content after Patch 1.6 and cannot run Phantom Liberty. The spoiler-light route is to start the base campaign, unlock the expansion naturally, play Phantom Liberty before the main story’s final point of no return, and then finish remaining endgame content.

On PC, the game and expansion launched through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and GeForce Now. CD PROJEKT RED announced on September 14, 2026 that the base game, Phantom Liberty, and Ultimate Edition are planned for Battle.net later in 2026. That announcement did not specify a date, so availability should be checked at the time you buy.

PlayStation 4 versus PlayStation 5
The base game is listed for both PS4 and PS5, but the PS4 version is effectively a legacy release. The official PlayStation information identifies November 8, 2022 as the PS4’s last patch date and states that PS5 is required for later patches and Phantom Liberty. If you want the current 2.0 systems, the expansion, or the full Ultimate Edition, choose PS5.

Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S
Xbox One remains playable for the original campaign and continues to receive technical support, but it does not receive new content. Phantom Liberty and the newer content updates are limited to Xbox Series X|S. A Series console is therefore the minimum Xbox choice for a current playthrough.
What does Phantom Liberty add?
Phantom Liberty is an action-focused spy-thriller expansion set primarily in Dogtown, a new district within Night City. Its story introduces Solomon Reed and a separate chain of missions that intersects with the main game’s characters, factions, and choices.

The expansion is not a cosmetic add-on. Its missions, equipment, progression system, and choices are designed for the updated game, which is why it is unavailable on PS4 and Xbox One. CD PROJEKT RED game director Gabe Amatangelo described it as “the culmination of years of hard work on the part of all of our teams.”

Do you need to finish the main game before Phantom Liberty?
No. You do not need to complete the original campaign first. The expansion becomes available during a normal campaign, and you can enter it before reaching the main story’s final point of no return. You should, however, begin the base game and make some progress before starting it.
Why starting the base game first is better
Playing the opening acts establishes V, Johnny Silverhand, Night City’s factions, and the game’s central relationships. Phantom Liberty assumes you understand that context. Entering Dogtown with that background gives the expansion’s characters and decisions more weight and avoids introducing major story information out of sequence.
Can you start with a levelled character?
Yes. The game offers a menu option to create a levelled character for a quicker start. This is useful for a second playthrough or for players who want to reach Dogtown quickly, but it skips earlier story progression and can remove the context built by the opening missions. A first-time player should normally use a standard new game.

What is the best order to play Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty?
Use this order for the most complete, spoiler-light experience:

- Continue until Phantom Liberty becomes available. The expansion’s access point appears naturally during the campaign rather than requiring a separate new game.
- Enter Dogtown and play the expansion. Follow its main missions and explore its side content at a pace that suits your build.
- Stop before the base game’s final point of no return. This keeps the expansion’s characters, rewards, and choices available while you continue the main story.
- Return to the base campaign and complete the finale. Your decisions in both parts can shape the available outcomes.
- Use the post-ending or endgame state to finish optional activities. Complete remaining gigs, jobs, exploration, and build experiments after seeing the ending you want.
You can move back and forth between ordinary Night City activities and Dogtown once the expansion is unlocked. The important sequencing rule is not to rush to the final point of no return before playing the expansion if you want its full narrative context.
What if you already reached the point of no return?
Make a manual save before entering the final sequence. Cyberpunk 2077’s ending structure can return you to a state before the finale, but keeping a separate save gives you control over which missions and endings you revisit. If you have not yet started Phantom Liberty, load a save from before the final sequence and continue until the expansion opens.

Can your PC run Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0?
CD PROJEKT RED’s current requirements apply to the base game and Phantom Liberty from Update 2.0 onward. The published non-ray-tracing minimum targets 1080p at 30 frames per second; the recommended tier targets 1080p at 60 frames per second.

How to interpret the requirements
- The frame-rate target matters. The minimum list is for 30 FPS at 1080p, not 60 FPS or higher resolutions.
- An SSD is required. The stated storage capacity is 70GB on an SSD; ray-tracing configurations call for stronger hardware and an SSD or NVMe drive.
- Ray tracing changes the calculation. Ray-tracing tiers require more capable graphics hardware and additional memory than the non-ray-traced minimum. A system that meets the minimum can run the game without ray tracing but should not be assumed to deliver a good ray-traced experience.
- Laptop names are not equivalent to desktop names. Check the exact GPU model and its power limit rather than relying only on a series number.
- Keep free space beyond the listed 70GB. Updates and temporary installation files may need additional room even though the published requirement is 70GB.
If your computer falls between the two tiers, start with 1080p, disable ray tracing, use a sensible upscaling mode, and adjust crowd density and volumetric effects before reducing texture quality. Texture settings are especially dependent on available video memory.

Check the platform and edition label carefully before purchasing. On PlayStation, the current complete edition is the PS5 version; the PS4 base game is not a path to the expansion on that console. Existing owners should also verify whether an expansion listing is a download code, a disc package, or a bundle before ordering physical media.
Which platform is best for a new player?
Choose PC if you want configuration options
PC gives you the widest range of resolution, frame-rate, graphics, modding, and storefront choices, provided your hardware meets the Update 2.0 requirements. GeForce Now can stream the PC version when you own it through a supported store, which is useful when your local computer is below the recommended specification, although streaming quality depends on your connection and the service’s available hardware.
Choose PlayStation 5 for a simple console setup
PS5 supports the current patches, Phantom Liberty, and the complete Ultimate Edition without the configuration work associated with a PC. Make sure you are buying the PS5 edition rather than the legacy PS4 listing.
Choose Xbox Series X|S for current Xbox support
Either Series console supports the expansion and new content. Xbox One does not, so the generation distinction is more important than the Xbox model name shown in an older listing.
