Cyberpunk 2077 crashes usually trace to an unmet requirement, a damaged or incompatible graphics driver, corrupted game files, an overlay or background utility, unstable CPU/GPU clocks, or a mod that no longer matches the game build. Follow the checks below in order: confirm Windows and hardware, clean-install the graphics driver, repair the installation, disable overlays, return hardware to stock settings, and then isolate mods if the game is modded.
Start by identifying when the crash happens
The timing narrows the likely cause and prevents random changes. Record whether Cyberpunk 2077 crashes before the main menu, while loading a save, when opening a menu, or during play. Also note whether the problem began immediately after a game update, graphics-driver update, Windows change, or mod installation. A crash that disappears when overlays and monitoring tools are closed points to background software; a crash that appears only with a particular mod points to compatibility; and a failure after a driver update makes a driver rollback especially relevant.

Check Windows and the published PC requirements
CD PROJEKT RED’s technical-support sequence starts with the basics: “Make sure that your PC meets the Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements.” The figures below are the publisher’s 2023, non-ray-tracing requirements. They describe the expected rendering target, not a guarantee that every system will be crash-free.

Press Win+R, enter winver, and press Enter to see the installed Windows edition and version. Compare the processor, graphics card, and RAM with the table before changing software. CD PROJEKT RED says earlier minimum configurations may continue to run the game, but active support and testing for those setups ended after the requirements changed.

The storage requirement is an SSD. The publisher says SSDs provide faster loading, improved streaming, and better overall performance than HDDs. Moving an installation from an HDD to an SSD can therefore address streaming-related instability or severe loading behavior, but an SSD upgrade is not a universal crash cure.
Use the official fix sequence
Apply these steps in order, restarting the game after each major change. Change one category at a time so you can identify what actually solved the problem.
- Confirm Windows and hardware. Check
winver, installed RAM, processor, graphics card, and the drive containing the game against the requirements above. - Clean-install the graphics driver. Use the clean-install procedure for your GPU manufacturer. NVIDIA and Intel instructions reference Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU); AMD instructions reference AMD Cleanup Utility. Restart Windows and install a current driver appropriate for your exact card and operating system.
- Test a previous driver when timing points to the driver. If crashes began immediately after a graphics-driver update, install the previous driver version and report the issue to CD PROJEKT RED. The support team specifically advises this path: “If the issues in question occurred right after updating the drivers, install previous version and please report the issue to us.”
- Repair the game files. Use the launcher’s verify or repair function described below. Let the process finish before launching the game again.
- Disable overlays and unnecessary background applications. Turn off Discord, Ubisoft Connect, GOG Galaxy, and other in-game overlays. Close hardware-monitoring utilities temporarily. For diagnosis, also close antivirus or anti-malware applications, then turn protection back on immediately after testing.
- Return clocks to stock. Remove CPU and GPU overclocking or underclocking, including profiles applied by motherboard, graphics, or tuning utilities. CD PROJEKT RED warns that altered clocks can cause crashes and may damage hardware.
- Handle mods separately. If the installation is modded and the game recently updated, follow the mod procedure in the next section rather than assuming the base game is broken.
Clean-install the graphics driver correctly
NVIDIA or Intel graphics
Download the driver you intend to test before removing the current one. Disconnecting from the internet during cleanup can prevent Windows from automatically installing a different package. Boot into Windows Safe Mode if the DDU instructions for your driver recommend it, run DDU to remove the existing display-driver components, restart, and install the downloaded package. Choose the clean-install option when the installer offers one. Reboot once more, then test an unmodded save or a new game.

AMD graphics
Use AMD Cleanup Utility according to AMD’s instructions, restart when prompted, and install the selected Radeon driver. If the crash started after a new driver, test the immediately previous version instead of repeatedly installing newer releases. Keep a note of the driver version used for each test so a report to support contains useful timing information.
A clean installation is different from simply clicking “Update” over an existing package: it removes old display-driver components that can remain after several upgrades. Do not change game settings or add mods until you know whether the clean driver changes the crash.
Verify or repair Cyberpunk 2077 files
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Cyberpunk 2077, choose Properties, and open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to complete the check and replace damaged files.
GOG Galaxy
- Open GOG Galaxy and select Cyberpunk 2077.
- Open the game’s customization or settings menu and choose Manage installation.
- Select Verify / Repair and let the process finish before launching.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open your Library and locate Cyberpunk 2077.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Choose Manage, then Verify.
Verification can restore official files but normally does not make an incompatible mod compatible. If the game will not launch at all, CD PROJEKT RED also recommends reinstalling the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages for both x86 and x64. Install both architectures, restart Windows, and test again.

Remove overlay and background-software conflicts
Overlays inject a layer into the game, while monitoring and tuning utilities can hook graphics or change clocks. Disable each overlay in its host application, then fully exit that application from the notification area rather than merely closing its window. Include Discord, Ubisoft Connect, GOG Galaxy, and any other launcher or recording overlay enabled on the system.

For a controlled test, close hardware-monitoring and frame-rate tools, RGB or peripheral utilities, capture software, and other nonessential programs. Temporarily closing antivirus or anti-malware software is part of CD PROJEKT RED’s diagnostic advice; do this only while testing, do not browse or download during the test, and re-enable protection immediately afterward. If the game works only with one program closed, add an appropriate game exception or leave that program’s overlay disabled instead of permanently running without security protection.
Undo overclocking and underclocking
Reset the processor and graphics card to their manufacturer defaults. Check BIOS/UEFI for CPU multiplier, voltage, memory profile, and other tuning changes, then check GPU utilities for core, memory, voltage, and custom power-limit profiles. “Default” in a tuning application may still load a saved profile, so remove or disable the profile and restart Windows.

Run Cyberpunk 2077 at stock settings before experimenting again. Instability can appear only in a demanding scene or after the system has warmed up, so a short successful launch does not prove an altered clock is safe. CD PROJEKT RED explicitly cautions that overclocking or underclocking can cause crashes and can damage hardware.

CD PROJEKT RED’s modding documentation summarizes the common situation as: “The game just updated, and you’re crashing.” A game patch can change files that a framework, script extender, archive tool, or individual mod expects. A previously stable load order can therefore fail at launch, while loading a save, or during a specific feature.

Back up saves and record the installed mod list. Check each core framework and dependency for a version compatible with the current game build. Update those foundations before updating cosmetic or content mods. Do not assume that a mod marked “latest” supports your exact game version.

Remove or downgrade when compatibility is unavailable
If compatible framework versions do not exist, remove all mods and test the unmodded game. If you must keep the older mod setup, use a game version supported by that setup and prevent the launcher from applying another update until you have a recovery plan. A downgrade is a compatibility workaround, not a fix for the current build.
Re-enable mods in batches
If the unmodded installation is stable, restore mods in small batches. Launch and test after each batch. When a batch causes a crash, split it into smaller groups and repeat; this “bisect” method identifies the failing mod or dependency without reinstalling everything repeatedly. Remove the culprit, install a compatible release, or leave it disabled. Test a clean save as well as an existing save because a save that depends on removed content may behave differently.

When an SSD upgrade is worth considering
The published 70 GB requirement specifies an SSD for both minimum and recommended configurations. If Cyberpunk 2077 is installed on an HDD, moving it to an SSD—such as a 1TB NVMe SSD when the computer supports that interface—can improve loading, asset streaming, and general responsiveness. Confirm that the motherboard has an available compatible slot, that the operating system supports the drive, and that the game library has enough free space before buying. Treat this as a storage and performance upgrade, not a guaranteed answer to every crash.
Prepare a useful support report
If the sequence does not resolve the problem, preserve the evidence instead of repeatedly changing settings. Write down the exact crash timing, Windows version from winver, GPU model and driver version, launcher, whether the files passed verification, whether overlays and altered clocks were disabled, and the game/mod version when the crash began. State whether the previous driver changed the result. This information lets support distinguish a driver regression, damaged installation, unsupported hardware configuration, and mod incompatibility.
