Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player game, not a co-op or multiplayer campaign. The released game gives each player an individual V, quest state, inventory and save. CD PROJEKT RED’s official support and launch materials do not document a way to invite friends into your world, complete the main story together, share mission progress or synchronize loot.
You can still play alongside friends by comparing builds, discussing choices or running separate campaigns. However, there is no official shared world, co-op mission playlist, trading system or group-inventory rule to rely on. Phantom Liberty expands the solo campaign with Dogtown, new characters, gigs, boss fights, airdrops and courier missions; it does not turn those activities into multiplayer content.

Does Cyberpunk 2077 have co-op?
No. The released version of Cyberpunk 2077 is an individual single-player campaign. There is no official co-op mode, drop-in session, online lobby or multiplayer story option documented by CD PROJEKT RED.
That means a friend cannot join your V as a second character, control a companion during a mission or enter your Night City instance. You also cannot hand a quest to another player and have its completion appear in both campaigns. Every major decision, quest flag, level, cyberware upgrade and item belongs to the save in which it was earned.

The distinction matters because Night City looks like a persistent online world: it has crowds, vehicles, vendors, repeatable activities and a large map. Those systems are part of a solo simulation, not evidence of a shared server. Other visible characters are controlled by the game, and your friends remain outside your save.
What single-player ownership means
One V owns the campaign
Your character, attributes, perks, cyberware, weapons, clothing, money and stash are tied to your save. A second person cannot create a temporary V inside that save or contribute experience and equipment to it. If two people want to experience the same storyline, each must progress through a separate campaign.
Quests do not synchronize between players
There is no official system that copies a mission decision, romance outcome, ending or side-job completion from one player’s game to another. Even if two friends choose identical dialogue and mission paths, their saves remain independent. A completed quest in one campaign does not unlock the corresponding reward or follow-up in another.

There is no shared-session host
The game does not provide a host-save model in which one player supplies the world and another joins temporarily. Consequently, there is no guest progress to preserve, no host advantage to manage and no join-in-progress behavior for story missions.

How progression and saves actually work
Save often because the campaign state is personal
CD PROJEKT RED’s quest-support guidance explicitly advises players to save often. Manual saves let you preserve a decision before a conversation, combat encounter or point of no return. Autosaves and quicksaves also belong to your profile and cannot be merged with a friend’s campaign.
For practical planning, keep separate manual saves before major jobs, romance decisions and missions that can close or alter later opportunities. This is useful for solo replaying, not for handing a checkpoint to another player.
The Point of No Return is a save-state issue
The support guidance also discusses a Point of No Return issue after completing “Things Done Changed,” the Phantom Liberty/The Tower ending. The important implication is that the game evaluates the ending and subsequent access within an individual campaign save. It does not create a shared checkpoint that a group can enter together.
If you are approaching the Phantom Liberty ending, make a manual save beforehand. That gives you a personal fallback for exploring other content or testing a different decision. A friend cannot restore that save for you, and there is no party-wide rollback.
New Game and separate characters
Starting a new game creates another solo progression path. You can keep multiple characters or playthroughs, but each has its own quest state and inventory. New-game choices do not synchronize with an existing character or with another person’s account.

What Phantom Liberty adds—and what it does not
CD PROJEKT RED’s September 25, 2023 Phantom Liberty launch announcement describes a large single-player expansion set around Dogtown. It adds new characters and gigs, boss fights, and repeatable open-world activities in the form of airdrops and courier missions.

Dogtown is an additional area for your V’s campaign. Its missions, contacts, rewards and dialogue are recorded in that campaign’s save. There is no official party slot for bringing a friend into the district.
Airdrops and courier missions
The announcement calls airdrops and courier missions “infinitely replayable open world activities.” “Replayable” describes the ability to encounter the activities again in the solo open world; it does not mean online matchmaking or a shared activity queue. Rewards are still delivered to the player who completes them in that save.
Boss fights and gigs
New boss encounters, gigs and characters expand the amount of content available to one player. They do not establish a co-op mission playlist, synchronized objectives or shared completion rewards. The launch material does not describe any of those multiplayer systems.
Is there shared loot, trading or a group inventory?
No official shared-loot or trading rules are documented for the released game. The reviewed CD PROJEKT RED support and launch materials do not publish multiplayer inventory, group-drop, player-to-player trade or synchronized reward systems.

In normal play, a weapon, cyberware component, crafting ingredient, clothing item, shard or eddie is acquired by the individual campaign save. You cannot mail it to a friend, place it in a communal stash or make it appear in someone else’s inventory through an in-game trade screen.
This also explains why a “co-op loot strategy” is misleading for the shipped game. There is no need to divide drops between party members, roll for ownership or choose a group build. You optimize your own loadout and sell, dismantle or store items in your own economy.
Be cautious with claims that a particular patch added shared drops or cross-save inventories. Unless a later official CD PROJEKT RED release note or support page explicitly documents such a system, treat the claim as unsupported rather than as a hidden feature.
Can you play the main story with friends?
Not in the released game. Friends cannot join your main jobs, side jobs, gigs or Phantom Liberty missions as playable partners, and there is no co-op completion state for the campaign.

- Run parallel campaigns: Start at the same time, choose similar origins or builds, and compare decisions while each person plays their own save.
- Use a spoiler agreement: Decide whether to discuss endings, romance outcomes and major quest consequences before either player reaches them.
- Compare builds and routes: Share attribute plans, cyberware choices, weapon themes and approaches to stealth, hacking or direct combat.
- Watch a session: One person can stream or share their screen for discussion, but viewers do not gain control of V or progress in their own account.
- Replay independently: Keep a pre-ending manual save so each player can test an alternate outcome without affecting the other person’s campaign.
These are social ways to discuss a solo game, not substitutes for an official network mode. They do not create shared saves or transfer rewards.

Platforms and the currency of this information
CD PROJEKT RED states that after Patch 1.6, further content updates and improvements are made exclusively for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Phantom Liberty is listed for those platforms. This is the relevant official platform policy for current support, but platform and update policies can change, so check the latest CD PROJEKT RED announcement before buying an edition or expansion.
Platform availability is separate from multiplayer support. Owning the game on PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S does not unlock co-op, cross-play or shared progression. A console friend and a PC friend still have separate single-player campaigns.
What about mods, rumors and future multiplayer projects?
Unofficial modifications may experiment with networking or cooperative behavior, but a mod is not an official feature. It can require a particular game version, conflict with other modifications, break saves or stop working after an update. It may also lack matchmaking, anti-cheat, reliable synchronization and support for every mission.

Rumors and references to future projects should be kept separate from the released game. They cannot be used as evidence that current Cyberpunk 2077 saves, loot or missions work cooperatively. Do not install a tool or purchase an add-on on the assumption that it will provide supported co-op unless CD PROJEKT RED documents the feature for your platform and version.
How to plan a solo campaign when you expected co-op
Before starting
- Confirm that you are buying the single-player game and, if wanted, Phantom Liberty for a supported platform.
- Decide whether you want a focused build—such as netrunner, stealth, guns, blades or a hybrid—because there is no party role to cover weaknesses.
- Turn on or use manual saves at important decision points, and keep more than one backup save before major endings.
During missions
- Read the objective and optional-objective text before leaving an area; you are responsible for every role in the mission.
- Collect and evaluate loot for your own build. Sell or dismantle excess items rather than waiting for a teammate who cannot receive them.
- When a quest warns about a decisive step, create a manual save so you can explore another path later.
When approaching Phantom Liberty’s ending
- Keep a manual save before “Things Done Changed” and other clearly signposted final decisions.
- Finish optional Dogtown gigs or activities you want to see before committing to the ending.
- After the ending, load the earlier save if you want to continue exploring content from the pre-ending state.
Best reference for solo builds and missions
Players looking for help with the single-player systems may prefer Cyberpunk 2077 The Complete Official Guide Collection, a physical strategy guide. Its listing describes walkthroughs, full-color maps, character builds, quests, optional objectives and reward strategies. It is relevant because those are the systems the released game actually provides: planning one character, navigating missions and deciding how to use rewards.
Check the exact edition, retailer stock and price before ordering. A guide cannot add co-op or shared loot, but it can help you route a solo build, find optional content and understand mission rewards.
The practical answer for different player goals

In short, treat Cyberpunk 2077 as a deep, choice-driven solo RPG. Its progression, missions and rewards are designed around one player’s save, and neither the base game nor Phantom Liberty supplies the co-op, shared-loot or shared-progression layer that the title’s online-looking world might suggest.
