Cyberpunk 2077 Builds Explained: How to Choose Attributes, Weapons, Perks, and Cyberware

The best Cyberpunk 2077 build is the one that makes your preferred combat loop stronger. Decide first whether you want to hack from safety, slow time and cut through enemies, fight at point-blank range, or combine stealth with firearms. Then put Attribute points into the perk branches that enable that loop, select weapons that use those perks, and spend Cyberware Capacity on implants that improve both offense and survival.

There is no developer-certified “best build” or measured winner. The examples below are starting templates based on CD PROJEKT RED’s official build guides. They work within the post-Update 2.0 system, whose core framework remains the basis of the latest relevant official patch notes available: Patch 2.31, published September 11, 2025. Those notes do not establish that no later patch exists, so treat exact item balance as version-sensitive.

What a build means in Cyberpunk 2077

A build is the interaction of five choices: your combat loop, Attributes, perk branches, weapons and cyberware. A coherent setup makes each choice reinforce the others. For example, a netrunner who invests in Intelligence, equips quickhacks that recover or conserve RAM, and carries a close-range backup weapon is pursuing one plan. Splitting points randomly between unrelated weapon and perk branches can leave every part merely adequate.

Update 2.0, released as a free overhaul for the base game on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, reduced the number of small passive perks and made individual perks more consequential. Perks can now unlock distinct abilities, such as Overclock for netrunners, Bolt shots for Tech weapons and Adrenaline Rush for Body-focused characters. CD PROJEKT RED recommended a new playthrough after the overhaul because so many systems changed, although existing saves could continue.

The overhaul also replaced the former skill set with five progression skills: Headhunter, Netrunner, Shinobi, Solo and Engineer. These skills are not locked to a matching Attribute and can reach level 60, so your skill progression can complement a build rather than dictate it.

Start with the combat loop, not a weapon list

Before spending a point, describe what you want to do during an ordinary fight. Your answer determines which Attribute thresholds and perk branches matter.

Remote hacking and controlled takedowns

You stay at distance, spread quickhacks, manipulate enemy systems and finish targets when an opening appears. Intelligence is the natural primary investment. The official Hack-&-Slash Netrunner example commits early points to Intelligence through the Phenom threshold, then adds close-combat options, RAM recovery and quickhack combinations so the character is not helpless when enemies reach them.

Time-dilated melee

You activate a Sandevistan, experience time dilation and use the window to close distance or eliminate several targets. Reflexes and Technical Ability are the focus of the official Bullet-Time Ninja template. Melee weapons are central, while the Reflexes branch can also support submachine guns and assault rifles if you want a stronger ranged option.

Direct pressure and heavy impact

You absorb incoming damage, close the gap and win through blunt weapons or shotguns. The Savage Slugger Solo example emphasizes Body and Technical Ability, with early defensive investment before concentrating on damage. This is a useful model if you prefer a forgiving close-range loop rather than stealth or elaborate setup.

Stealth and firearm control

If your priority is remaining unseen, precise ranged attacks or choosing when a fight starts, begin with the stealth and firearm-related branches that match the weapons you actually intend to carry. Do not add a branch merely because it is popular: every point should improve the moment-to-moment loop you described.

How to align Attributes and perks

  1. Write down one primary and one supporting job. Examples are “quickhacks plus emergency shotgun” or “Sandevistan melee plus assault rifle.” This prevents your secondary weapon from taking over the whole allocation.
  2. Reach the perk thresholds that enable the job. In Update 2.0, perks can grant new actions and mechanics, not just small percentage increases. Prioritize the branch that changes how you play before buying minor numerical improvements.
  3. Use the supporting Attribute for reliability. A Body-heavy character may use Technical Ability to improve survivability and cyberware capacity; a Reflexes-focused ninja may use Technical Ability for the same reason. The exact split depends on the perks you select and the equipment available at your current level.
  4. Leave room for experimentation. Perks can be refunded individually for free. That makes perk testing low-risk, but do not assume unlimited Attribute respecs. Update 2.0’s notes describe a one-time full Attribute reset for existing playthroughs at that update, not a permanent unrestricted reset rule.

Attributes also affect equipment tuning. Cyberware is attuned to an Attribute, and a higher value in that relevant Attribute improves the implant’s stat bonus. An Attribute therefore does double duty: it unlocks perks and strengthens the implants chosen for the same plan.

Choose weapons that make the perks matter

Weapon selection should follow the investment rather than compete with it. Carry a primary weapon that receives the most benefit from your perk branch and a secondary that solves its main weakness.

Weapon and loot tiers scale with character level under Update 2.0. The official notes state that only Iconic weapons can be upgraded apart from cyberware, so ordinary weapons should be treated as replaceable as you level. Exact weapon balance can change between patches; the archetypes are playstyle examples, not a damage ranking.

Use cyberware to reinforce offense and defense

Cyberware is not a cosmetic afterthought. CD PROJEKT RED described it as “specific gear that supports and enhances your playstyle and gameplay” in its September 22, 2023 explanation of the 2.0 system.

Manage Cyberware Capacity

Cyberware Capacity limits the total implants you can equip. Capacity grows with levels, and other items or a cyberware type can modify it. Install the implants that directly improve your loop first rather than filling every slot with small bonuses.

The Edgerunner perk permits a limited amount of over-capacity cyberware at a health cost. It is a deliberate risk-and-power trade-off: use it when the extra implant changes your build, not simply to equip a marginal statistic.

Remember where armor comes from

After the overhaul, armor is provided primarily by cyberware. Most clothing is cosmetic, although exceptions such as bulletproof vests exist. Outfit appearance and defensive planning are therefore separate decisions: choose clothes for the look you want, then check the implant screen for actual protection.

Match implants to Attributes

Check each implant’s attuned Attribute before committing points. Raising that Attribute improves the implant’s stat bonus, so an Intelligence-led netrunner, Reflexes-led ninja and Body-led solo should not automatically copy one another’s cyberware. The strongest package is the one whose attunements match the Attributes you already need for perks.

Three official archetypes as starting templates

These are developer-published examples, not controlled tests, win-rate claims or mandatory allocations. Use them to identify a direction, then alter the details to suit your preferred distance and backup plan.

Template Engagement distance Core loop Attribute emphasis Weapon direction Cyberware dependency
Hack-&-Slash Netrunner Long range, then close range when needed Quickhack combinations, RAM recovery and melee follow-up Intelligence first; commit early toward the Phenom threshold Close-combat option that complements hacking Implants that sustain RAM, survivability and the Intelligence-attuned bonuses
Bullet-Time Ninja Close range with a temporary ranged option Sandevistan time dilation and fast melee eliminations Reflexes and Technical Ability Melee; SMGs or assault rifles if desired High priority on Sandevistan support and Capacity management
Savage Slugger Solo Point-blank to short range Durability, blunt impacts and shotgun bursts Body and Technical Ability Blunt weapons and shotguns Defensive implants first, then capacity spent on damage

How to personalize a template

Keep the primary Attribute and signature perk branch until the build feels functional. Change the secondary weapon, defensive implants or supporting Attribute when the character encounters a specific problem. A netrunner who is repeatedly cornered can add a close-range solution without abandoning Intelligence; a ninja who dislikes melee can develop the Reflexes firearm option without discarding the time-dilation concept.

A practical build-planning sequence

  1. Choose your edition and expansion scope. The base game contains the post-2.0 Attribute and perk framework. Phantom Liberty is not required for that system. If you own the expansion, its Relic tree adds a separate layer of choices.
  2. Sketch the first 10–15 levels. Select the Attribute branch and signature perk that make your chosen loop work immediately. Avoid planning only for a theoretical endgame character who is unpleasant to play for most of the campaign.
  3. Assign a primary weapon and emergency option. Ensure both can function with the perks you are actually buying. Keep ordinary weapons replaceable as tiers rise; reserve long-term upgrade attention for Iconic weapons and cyberware.
  4. Set a cyberware priority list. Put loop-defining implants first, then survivability, then convenience. Check Capacity before buying an expensive implant and verify its attuned Attribute bonus.
  5. Play a short test period. Fight several encounters, including one where your preferred range is awkward. If the loop breaks, refund individual perks and adjust the supporting branch instead of rebuilding everything.
  6. Review at major level or story milestones. New perk access, Capacity growth and weapon tiers can change which supporting choice is most valuable. Treat the plan as a framework, not a contract.

Using the official Build Planner

CD PROJEKT RED’s browser-based Build Planner includes the base-game trees and, when applicable, the Phantom Liberty Relic tree. The developer introduced it so players could experiment with Attributes and perk points without committing those choices in-game. Use it to compare two versions of the same idea: for example, a pure Hack-&-Slash Netrunner against one that spends more points on a shotgun backup, or a melee Ninja against one that adds SMG and assault-rifle support.

Keep the Relic tree separate in your notes. A Relic allocation is expansion content and should not be presented as a requirement for a base-game build. If you do not own Phantom Liberty, plan only with the base-game trees.

Common build mistakes and fixes

  • Chasing a supposed universal best build: No official source supplies a controlled ranking. Choose the loop you enjoy, then optimize within it.
  • Buying perks for several unrelated weapons: Refund individual perks and concentrate on one primary family plus a practical backup.
  • Ignoring defense until damage feels high: The Solo example deliberately invests in defense early, and every archetype benefits from cyberware that keeps its loop running.
  • Treating clothes as your armor plan: Check cyberware for protection; most clothing is cosmetic after Update 2.0.
  • Exceeding Capacity without understanding the cost: Edgerunner’s overage is limited and costs health. Equip only an over-capacity implant that materially changes the build.
  • Assuming every Attribute can be freely reset: Perks are individually refundable, but the documented full Attribute reset was a one-time provision for existing playthroughs when Update 2.0 launched.
  • Planning around obsolete item behavior: Weapon tiers and upgrade rules are version-sensitive. Recheck current patch notes when a weapon or implant behaves differently from an older guide.

What to buy and what you need to play

You need Cyberpunk 2077 itself to use these systems. The official Update 2.3 FAQ states that someone who does not own the game must purchase it; Phantom Liberty is an optional expansion for its additional content and Relic tree. Confirm your platform and edition before purchasing, because availability and included content vary by platform.

Bottom line: choose a loop, then make every system support it

Start with the fight you want to repeat: hack, slow time and strike, overwhelm enemies at close range, or control encounters with stealth and firearms. Put Attributes into the perks that enable that behavior, select weapons that benefit from those perks, and spend Cyberware Capacity on implants whose attuned Attributes and defensive effects keep the loop reliable. The official Netrunner, Ninja and Solo guides are useful templates, but your preferred distance and backup plan—not a universal tier list—should decide what becomes your Cyberpunk 2077 build.
