The best beginner build in Cyberpunk 2077 is not a universal perk list. It is a coherent loop you can execute comfortably: choose how you want to fight, invest in the attribute and perk branch that improves that method, then make your operating system, weapons and cyberware reinforce it. Update 2.0 (released September 21, 2023) rebuilt perks, skill trees and cyberware, while Update 2.1 changed and clarified some systems, so pre-2.0 guides can give incorrect advice.
This guide covers the current 2.0/2.1-era framework for starting in Night City, learning combat, choosing cyberware, exploring efficiently and deciding between the base game and Ultimate Edition.

What changed with Update 2.0 and 2.1
Update 2.0 redesigned the perk and skill-tree structure, overhauled cyberware, and added vehicle combat, car chases and a new police system on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those changes affect how you spend attributes, select implants and approach encounters. Update 2.1 subsequently adjusted and clarified parts of those systems. Treat any mechanic-specific recommendation as 2.0/2.1 advice rather than assuming an older guide still applies.

Choose a combat loop before you choose perks
At character creation, decide what you want to do repeatedly during a fight. The most forgiving starting point is direct combat with a dependable firearm, but blades, stealth and netrunning are equally valid when their supporting systems are developed together. No authoritative source establishes a universal best-build statistic, damage-per-second winner or beginner success rate, so the practical test is whether the build feels understandable and reliable in your hands.
| Archetype | Typical opening | Early priorities | Backup plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct-combat weapon user | Scan, take cover, weaken the closest threat and control a lane with your main gun. | Perks for the weapon family you actually use; stamina, healing and survivability; an operating system that supports that weapon loop. | A second weapon with a different range or damage pattern. |
| Blade and mobility | Close distance, use movement to avoid return fire, finish isolated targets and reposition. | Reflexes-oriented movement and blade perks, stamina management, defensive cyberware and implants that support speed or durability. | A firearm for open spaces or enemies that punish melee approaches. |
| Stealth | Observe patrols and cameras, bypass or disable defenses, then eliminate targets from a controlled position. | Detection control, stealth perks, a quiet primary weapon and cyberware that helps you remain undetected. | A close-range weapon and enough health or armor to survive a loud escape. |
| Netrunner | Scan the area, queue quickhacks and exploit cameras, devices and isolated enemies before committing. | Hacking capacity and efficiency, an operating system suited to quickhacks, and perks that improve the hacks you use most. | A reliable close-range weapon for targets resistant to or positioned beyond your quickhack plan. |
These are frameworks rather than locked classes. You can begin with direct combat, discover that you prefer stealth, then move your later points toward hacking or blades. Try the loop across several missions before spending heavily on specialized implants.
Attributes and perks: a beginner spending plan
Commit to one primary branch
Put your first meaningful investments into the attribute and perk branch that improves your chosen weapon or method. A pistol-focused character should not scatter early points equally among every weapon category; a blade character gains more by improving movement and blade interactions than by buying unrelated rifle bonuses. The same principle applies to a netrunner whose value comes from quickhack throughput rather than a collection of disconnected gun perks.

Add one support branch
After your primary loop works, add a support layer that solves its most obvious weakness. A gun user may need mobility, stamina or survivability. A melee character may need a ranged option. A stealth hacker may need a dependable loud fallback. This two-branch structure is easier to understand than trying to activate every attractive perk on the tree.
Use the planner before respec decisions
The official Build Planner displays the redesigned base-game trees and the Phantom Liberty Relic tree. Sketch a primary branch, a support branch and the cyberware or operating-system effects that make them useful. Respec or experimentation is most valuable after you have played enough missions to identify what you actually press, miss or run out of during combat.

- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
Cyberware is part of the build, not decoration
Cyberware is a core build layer. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as gear that supports and enhances your playstyle, and the game limits how much cyberware you can equip. Capacity therefore has an opportunity cost: an implant that improves your chosen loop can be more valuable than an unrelated bonus simply because a slot or capacity point is unavailable later.
Before visiting a ripperdoc, write down the problem you want to solve. Examples include surviving a close-range approach, staying undetected long enough to finish a hack, recovering after a missed dodge, or making a weapon category more consistent. Buy implants that address those problems first rather than filling every available slot immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Weapon-forward build: prioritize implants that improve survivability, stamina or the handling pattern of your selected weapons.
- Blade and mobility build: favor movement, closing distance and damage mitigation so you can reach targets without trading your entire health bar.
- Stealth build: choose detection-control and survivability effects that preserve a quiet approach and provide an escape when it fails.
- Netrunner build: prioritize the operating-system and capacity effects that let your preferred quickhacks run efficiently, then add a weapon fallback.
Check vendors and ripperdocs as you level because available equipment and your capacity change over time. Do not assume an implant recommended in a pre-2.0 guide has the same function or value after the redesign.
A repeatable combat routine
Cyberpunk 2077 rewards combining movement, cover, healing, grenades, weapons and cyberware instead of standing in one place and trading damage. Use the following sequence until it becomes automatic.
- Scan before shooting. Identify enemies, cameras, turrets, explosive objects, entrances and possible cover. A few seconds of information prevents a bad first engagement.
- Control the information layer. Disable or bypass cameras and other defenses when your build allows it. A stealth character may avoid a whole patrol; a netrunner may use devices to create an opening; a direct fighter may simply remove the most dangerous camera first.
- Choose the first target. Remove the threat that can collapse your position fastest, such as a heavy weapon user, a flanker or an enemy who can expose you from cover.
- Open with your build’s strongest action. Use the weapon, blade movement or quickhack interaction you have invested in rather than a random tool that receives no perk support.
- Keep moving between safe positions. Peek from cover, change angles and use vertical routes. Melee characters should close and disengage deliberately; ranged characters should avoid being surrounded.
- Heal before the emergency. Learn the timing and recharge behavior of your healing item while the fight is manageable. Waiting until a single hit can kill you removes your options.
- Use grenades and cyberware to break stalemates. They are most useful when they create space, interrupt a dangerous action or let your primary loop resume, not when thrown randomly at the start of every encounter.
- Carry a counter to your main weakness. Keep a second weapon or approach for resistant enemies, long sightlines, armored targets or situations where stealth has already failed.
Lower difficulty is a sensible learning control while you learn recoil, stamina, healing timing, quickhack queues and cyberware effects. Raise it once your attributes, perks, equipment and operating system feel coherent; difficulty changes the pressure while you practice, not the underlying need for a coordinated build.

How to learn your weapons and quickhacks
Weapons
Spend a few minutes in a low-risk encounter testing reload timing, recoil, stamina drain, charged shots and the distance at which your weapon remains accurate. If a weapon feels powerful only when you stand still, practice firing while moving between cover. Keep a second weapon with a different range so one bad matchup does not force a reload of your entire plan.
Quickhacks
A beginner netrunner should learn a small queue of dependable quickhacks rather than buying every option. Use scanning to identify the target and its surroundings, queue hacks in an order that creates an advantage, then switch to your weapon when the queue has done its job. Maintain a close-range fallback because not every encounter gives you a safe line of sight or enough time to solve it remotely.
What to do first in Night City
Do not sprint through only the main jobs. Alternate story missions with side jobs, gigs, NCPD activities, cyberpsychos, hustles and other map markers. This mix gives you money, gear, practice and upgrade opportunities while teaching the city’s layouts.
- Complete the opening missions until free exploration is available. Use this period to learn scanning, dialogue choices, driving, inventory screens and your first weapon loop.
- Open the map and select a small cluster of nearby activities. A short route is more useful than crossing the entire city for one low-level marker.
- Alternate activity types. Follow a main job with a gig or NCPD encounter, then try a side job or cyberpsycho. Each format teaches a different combination of combat, investigation and traversal.
- Loot deliberately. Collect weapons and components you can use or sell, but avoid stopping every minute for objects that do not improve your current plan.
- Visit vendors and ripperdocs as your level changes. Compare available equipment and cyberware with your attribute and perk direction before spending your money.
- Read shards when they add context or tactical information. They can explain a location, objective or faction without requiring you to stop following the broader route.
- Use fast travel selectively. It saves time for distant objectives, but driving or walking some routes reveals vertical paths, ambushes and environmental encounters that fast travel skips.
The city’s vertical design matters. Look above and below the obvious street route, check rooftops and alleys, and use doors, ladders and elevated walkways when the map marker appears to be directly in front of you but the objective is not at street level.
Phantom Liberty and the Relic tree
Phantom Liberty adds Dogtown and a separate Relic progression layer. If you own the expansion, include the Relic tree in your planning rather than treating it as an unrelated bonus system. The Build Planner displays this tree alongside the redesigned base-game trees.

| Ultimate Edition | Cyberpunk 2077 plus Phantom Liberty, with the major free updates included. | New players who want the complete current package and the Dogtown/Relic content. | Digital versus physical format, platform compatibility and local stock. |
For a physical copy, Bandai Namco’s listed contents include game media or a code, a world compendium, a Night City map, postcards and stickers, but the exact package can vary by market. Confirm the box details rather than assuming every region receives identical inserts.
A printed reference for maps and quests
The Cyberpunk 2077 Complete Official Guide is useful for readers who prefer a physical reference. Simon & Schuster lists a standard edition at a US$24.99 list price and a Collector’s Edition at US$39.99; retailer prices can differ. Its stated coverage includes character development, gameplay, quests, an updated interactive map, main jobs, side jobs, gigs, cyberpsychos and hustles.
Because the guide predates later patches, use it primarily for routes, map context and quest coverage. Check current in-game descriptions and patch notes before relying on it for perk behavior, cyberware effects, police mechanics or other systems that Update 2.0 and 2.1 changed.

Common beginner problems and fixes
“My character feels weak everywhere.”
You probably spread attributes, perks and cyberware across too many unrelated functions. Choose one primary combat loop, refund or redirect future points toward its branch, and replace implants that do not help that loop. Keep one support option rather than trying to become equally strong with every weapon.
“I die before I can reach enemies.”
Use cover and a ranged fallback, improve movement or survivability, and stop opening every encounter by sprinting into the center. Scan for alternate entrances and remove cameras or high-threat enemies before committing to melee range.
“Stealth always collapses.”
Scan patrol routes and cameras before taking the first shot. Disable or bypass defenses, move bodies or targets away from sight lines when possible, and keep a loud escape weapon ready. A failed stealth attempt is a transition to your backup loop, not an automatic reload.

Work in nearby clusters, alternate activity types and postpone distant markers. Main jobs, side jobs, gigs, NCPD activities, cyberpsychos and hustles all provide practice and rewards; you do not need to clear every icon before advancing the story.
