For a first playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 after Update 2.0, choose one main attribute lane, support it with Technical Ability, and spend perks on the weapons and abilities you actually use. A focused build is stronger than scattering points across all five attributes. Treat cyberware capacity as part of your build, save before major missions, and loot Konpeki Plaza before leaving it.
What Update 2.0 changed
Free Update 2.0 launched for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 21, 2023. CD PROJEKT RED rebuilt the perk trees, cyberware rules, and police systems extensively enough that the studio recommended starting a new playthrough. The redesign uses fewer, more consequential perks and lets you redistribute perks outside combat, so experimenting is safer than it was at launch.

Cyberware, not clothing, supplies most armor
Nearly all armor moved from clothing to cyberware. Clothing is therefore primarily a style choice after Update 2.0, while your cyberware selection and available Cyberware Capacity determine much of your defensive ceiling. Technical Ability improves capacity-related options, making it useful even when your preferred weapon is a shotgun, blade, pistol, or quickhack.

Attributes are the five broad lanes that shape your character: Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence, and Cool. Perks are the more specific decisions inside those lanes. Attributes should establish your direction; perks should reinforce the combat loop you are using right now. Buying a few shallow perks in every tree can leave a level-20 character noticeably weaker than one who has committed to a primary lane.

Level and Street Cred are separate
Character level improves access to attributes, perks, and gear. Street Cred is a separate progression bar that opens fixer work, vendors, and discounts. Raising one does not automatically raise the other, so a character can be high level while still needing Street Cred to unlock particular jobs or shop options.
Choose an attribute lane
| Attribute | Best fit | Typical resource or advantage | Beginner role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body | Shotguns, blunt weapons, brawling | Health, stamina, close-range durability | The forgiving choice when you want to survive mistakes and fight at short range. |
| Reflexes | Blades, mobility, fast firearms | Movement and weapon speed | Choose it when repositioning quickly is as important as damage. |
| Technical Ability | Cyberware, tech weapons, capacity-focused builds | Cyberware Capacity and related perks | The most useful supporting investment for almost any build. |
| Intelligence | Cyberdecks, quickhacks, smart weapons | RAM and hack-based control | Best for players who prefer planning, hacking, and remote damage. |
| Cool | Stealth, pistols, precision headshots | Detection control and deliberate burst damage | Rewards patience, positioning, and accurate shots. |
Pick one primary lane and one supporting lane. Technical Ability is the usual support choice because capacity limits how many implants you can equip, but Body can support a fragile hacker or Cool marksman when health is the immediate problem. Your weapon drops and preferred abilities should decide which tree receives the next point, not a supposed universal ranking.
Four beginner builds that work after Update 2.0
| Build | Combat distance | Primary weapons | Resource loop | Survivability | Cyberware demand | Attribute trees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netrunner and smart-weapon hybrid | Long to medium range, with aggressive close-range options | Quickhacks, smart weapons, Monowire | RAM, hack queues, and Overclock windows | Moderate until Body support is added | Moderate; a flexible starting deck uses relatively little capacity | Intelligence first, Technical Ability support, later Body |
| Reflex blade or fast-gun | Close to medium range | Blades or fast firearms | Stamina, movement, and weapon uptime | Moderate; mobility is the defense | Moderate to high as implants become more ambitious | Reflexes first, Technical Ability support |
| Body shotgun or brawler | Close range | Shotguns and blunt weapons | Health, stamina, and sustained pressure | High when supported by suitable cyberware | Moderate; capacity improves the durability ceiling | Body first, Technical Ability support |
| Cool stealth and precision | Long to medium range, avoiding open fights | Pistols and precision weapons | Stealth, detection control, and headshots | Low if exposed; improve it with Technical Ability or Body | Moderate | Cool first, Technical Ability or Body support |
Netrunner and smart-weapon hybrid
CD PROJEKT RED’s Hack-&-Slash Netrunner example gives a clear early sequence. Put initial perk points into Intelligence and take Optimization for RAM regeneration. Continue into Hack Queue and Data Recycler, then return to the middle branch for Overclock. Later, Body’s Adrenaline Rush adds an overshield and makes an aggressive Monowire approach safer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use quickhacks to weaken or disable targets before exposing yourself.
- Keep enough RAM regeneration to maintain pressure instead of spending every point on one large hack.
- Use Hack Queue and Data Recycler to make several linked hacks more efficient.
- Activate Overclock when you need a burst of hacking power, then reposition while enemies are compromised.
- Add Adrenaline Rush from Body when you want to bring the Monowire into close range.
The official example calls the Militech Paraline, your starting cyberdeck, one of the most flexible options. It supports Monowire and smart weapons while using relatively little Cyberware Capacity, so you can reserve capacity for defensive or utility implants during the opening hours. You do not have to copy the example exactly; it is a reliable pattern for learning the Intelligence resource loop.
Reflex blade or fast-gun build
Reflexes is a mobility and weapon-specialization lane rather than one fixed build. If you choose blades, buy the movement and blade perks that improve the attacks you perform most often. If you choose fast firearms, favor the branch that improves your chosen weapon family instead of taking every mobility option at once.

Keep Technical Ability as your support investment. A fast character still needs enough capacity for implants that improve survival and movement. No source establishes one objectively best Reflexes allocation, so judge the build by whether you can enter, reposition, and leave a fight without exhausting stamina or becoming trapped in the open.
Body shotgun or brawler build
Body is the forgiving lane for a player who wants health, stamina, and close-range damage. Shotguns reward pushing into an enemy’s space; blunt weapons and brawling reward staying there. Put early perks into the weapon family you are actually carrying, then use Technical Ability to raise the cyberware capacity available for survival.

Cool stealth and precision build
Cool suits players who prefer to scout, stay undetected, and end encounters with accurate pistol or precision shots. Buy the stealth and weapon perks that match your approach rather than spreading points across every Cool branch. If a stealth failure leaves you too fragile, use Technical Ability or Body as the supporting lane instead of buying unrelated perks in all five trees.
A Cool build has a deliberate resource loop: information and positioning come first, then a small number of high-value shots. It is less forgiving when surrounded, so manual saves and a route through each room matter more than raw damage alone.

How to spend attributes and perks without wasting points
- Declare a primary lane. Decide whether your next fights will be controlled by hacks, mobility, close-range force, or precision. Use the corresponding attribute as the default destination for new points.
- Buy efficient early perks. Select perks that improve the attack, hack, or movement action you repeat. A perk that changes your normal rotation is more valuable than a minor bonus for a weapon you never equip.
- Add one support lane. Technical Ability is the broadest support option because Cyberware Capacity affects every style. Body is a sensible alternative when incoming damage, rather than implant capacity, is the immediate limitation.
- Use redistribution deliberately. Update 2.0 allows perk redistribution outside combat. If a weapon or ability is not working, move perks to the branch that matches your current loadout rather than restarting immediately.
- Reassess after major gear changes. A new cyberdeck, weapon family, or operating system can change your resource loop. Recheck your perks when the equipment changes, not after every individual fight.
- Do not level all five trees shallowly. The warning is especially important around level 20, when scattered spending can produce a character with no strong attack, defense, or resource engine.
Cyberware, capacity, and early money
Capacity is a build limit
Cyberware Capacity determines how many implants you can equip. Technical Ability and capacity-related perks raise the ceiling, while the Edgerunner perk lets you exceed it at a health cost. Exceeding capacity is therefore a deliberate trade: more implants and a stronger build in exchange for reduced health. Do not treat Edgerunner as free capacity; check whether your health pool and combat habits can absorb the drawback.
What to prioritize in the opening hours
- Spend early money on cyberware that supports your chosen combat loop rather than cosmetic clothing.
- Choose an operating system that matches your lane: a cyberdeck for quickhacks, or the system that supports your weapon and mobility plan when you are not hacking.
- Keep some capacity free for an upgrade that solves a real problem, such as surviving burst damage or maintaining your resource loop.
- Sell surplus weapons and junk at drop points. Carrying unused gear does not improve your build, while the money can fund implants and an operating system.
How to audit a cyberware loadout
- Read the capacity cost of every implant before installing it.
- Identify the implant that directly supports your primary attack or resource.
- Reserve capacity for defense so one damage spike does not end a run.
- Only use Edgerunner when the extra implants produce more value than the health cost.
- Revisit the loadout after earning Technical Ability perks or replacing the operating system.
Your first hours: a safe progression route
Finish the prologue and first Ripperdoc mission
Complete the prologue and the first Ripperdoc mission, then use Watson as a low-risk area to learn shooting, hacking, stealth, and movement. Watson lets you test a build before committing to high-consequence story missions. Sell excess weapons and junk at drop points while you learn which attacks and resources you actually use.
Save before consequential missions
Make a manual save before The Pickup, before major dialogue decisions, and before The Heist. The early guide identifies The Pickup and the choice involving Jackie’s body during The Heist as consequential. Separate saves are more useful than relying only on autosaves because they preserve a route before a decision changes later content.
Loot Konpeki Plaza during The Heist
Konpeki Plaza is effectively a one-time visit. Before leaving, search for the unique Satori, Kongou, and Iguana Egg items. If you rush through the mission and exit, you should not assume that the same opportunity will remain available later. Make the manual save before entering the mission so you can check the area again without losing your main progress.
Understand the Nocturne Op55N1 cutoff
Clear the side content you want before taking the elevator in Nocturne Op55N1. That elevator is the point of no return until the credits. After an ending, the game reloads you before the decision, but the reload is not a substitute for a pre-elevator save when you want to explore several branches or finish optional work first.

When to start Phantom Liberty
In a normal playthrough, Phantom Liberty becomes available after the base-game Transmission mission. The expansion adds Dogtown, the Relic tree, and new gear. For a first run, the practical target is around level 15 to 20: you have enough tools to understand your build, while Dogtown still arrives early enough to influence the rest of the campaign.
Normal entry versus Skip Ahead
The Skip Ahead option creates a preset character for players who want to begin the expansion immediately. It is useful when you have already completed the base game or want to sample Dogtown without replaying the opening, but it gives you a preconfigured starting point rather than the gradual build development of a normal first playthrough.
What the expansion changes numerically
| Progression element | Base game | With Phantom Liberty |
|---|---|---|
| Character level cap | 50 | 60 |
| Additional attribute points | None from the expansion | 10 additional points |
| Additional perk points | None from the expansion | 10 additional points |
| Relic points | Not available | 15 reported: six from the story and nine from Militech Data Terminals |
Relic points are separate from normal attribute and perk progression. The reported total is six story-awarded points plus nine from Militech Data Terminals, and Relic points can be reassigned. Because Phantom Liberty choices can affect endings, create a manual save before major branch missions rather than relying on a single campaign file.
Common beginner problems and the precise fix
| What you notice | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Your character can use many weapons but none feels strong. | Perks are spread across several unrelated trees. | Choose one primary weapon family and redirect available perks to its branch outside combat. |
| You run out of implant capacity before the build feels complete. | Technical Ability and capacity planning were treated as optional. | Use Technical Ability as the support lane, remove low-impact implants, and leave room for upgrades. |
| You spend money on clothes but remain fragile. | Clothing is being treated as the main armor source. | Prioritize cyberware and an operating system; keep clothing for appearance. |
| A hacker stalls after one large attack. | RAM regeneration and queue efficiency are underdeveloped. | For the Intelligence route, start with Optimization, then build toward Hack Queue, Data Recycler, and Overclock. |
| You lose a unique early item or a preferred quest outcome. | No manual save was made before a one-time mission or decision. | Keep separate saves before The Pickup, The Heist, major dialogue choices, Phantom Liberty branches, and the Nocturne Op55N1 elevator. |
| Dogtown feels overwhelming immediately. | The expansion was entered with too few tools or a preset build that does not match your preferences. | For a normal first playthrough, arrive after Transmission around level 15 to 20; use Skip Ahead only when immediate access is the goal. |
A practical decision rule for every level
Before spending a point, answer three questions: What action do I use to start a fight? What resource limits that action? Which failure ends the fight first: low health, low stamina, low RAM, or detection? Put the point where it improves the first answer, then use Technical Ability or Body to address the third. This keeps the build coherent without forcing you into a rigid preset.
For Intelligence, the loop is RAM regeneration, queued hacks, Overclock, and an optional Monowire push. For Reflexes, it is movement plus a single weapon family. For Body, it is stamina and health that let you maintain close range. For Cool, it is information, stealth, and precise shots. If the loop is clear and your cyberware supports it, the build is working even without a community-approved attribute spread.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before committing to a route
- Choose one primary attribute and one support attribute.
- Spend perks on the attacks, hacks, or movement actions you repeat.
- Track Cyberware Capacity and treat Edgerunner’s health cost as a real trade.
- Use Watson to test your build before high-consequence missions.
- Sell surplus gear and direct early money toward cyberware and an operating system.
- Make manual saves before The Pickup, The Heist decisions, Konpeki Plaza, Phantom Liberty branches, and the Nocturne Op55N1 elevator.
- Start Phantom Liberty after Transmission at about level 15 to 20 unless you intentionally choose Skip Ahead.
