Compare Surfshark if you need many simultaneous connections and a low introductory price; NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, or Mullvad if performance is your priority; and Proton VPN or another provider with a clearly scoped, independently audited policy if privacy and audit access matter most. For streaming, treat all provider claims and test results as snapshots—not guarantees for a particular service, country, or date.
This comparison uses provider-published plan figures dated 2026, an AV-TEST comparison from 2025, and other named sources’ assessments. Prices, features, plan limits, and streaming access can change.
Which CyberGhost alternative fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Providers to compare | What the available evidence says |
|---|---|---|
| Many devices and a low long-term introductory price | Surfshark | Surfshark’s 2026 comparison lists unlimited simultaneous connections and the lowest two-year introductory price among Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and NordVPN. |
| Performance | NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Mullvad | A June 2026 Artifact Security test, as reported by NordVPN, scored five providers in one test round. Results are useful context, not a permanent ranking. |
| Privacy policy and audit visibility | Proton VPN; also compare NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN | Compare policy detail, audit scope and report access, transparency reporting, jurisdiction, and ownership. An audit is not a guarantee of future behavior. |
| Streaming | Surfshark, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN | AV-TEST’s 2025 comparison and TechRadar’s Proton VPN testing show that results vary by service and test conditions. |
| Simple setup | ExpressVPN, Surfshark; CyberGhost as a baseline | TechRadar describes CyberGhost as beginner-friendly, while placing it below its leading picks. That is an editorial assessment, not a universal usability measure. |
| VPN coverage across a home network | A compatible router and a provider with router setup instructions | AV-TEST reported manual router setup options for some tested services. Compatibility depends on both the specific router and provider instructions. |
These are comparison starting points, not a single winner. Surfshark’s own comparison says the choice involves balancing privacy features, speed, device support, and price; because it is provider-authored, treat that framing as guidance rather than an independent finding.
How do the introductory prices and device limits compare?
Surfshark’s comparison page was published September 21, 2026, and says its figures were updated August 4, 2026. Its prices are in US dollars and may change. The figures below are introductory plan rates, not guaranteed checkout totals or renewal prices; taxes, regional availability, and bundle changes may affect what you pay.

A low monthly equivalent may require paying for a longer term upfront, so compare the total due at checkout and the renewal terms—not just the displayed monthly figure.
What do the performance scores actually show?
NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 post relays results from Artifact Security’s June 2026 test of NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, Proton VPN, and Surfshark. The reported assessment covered throughput, stability, latency, connection time, leak protection, website accessibility, and feature reliability.

|---|---|
| NordVPN | 91; sole Platinum result |
| ExpressVPN | 84 |
| Proton VPN | 83 |
| Surfshark | 81 |
| Mullvad | 70 |
The same report, as summarized by NordVPN, gives NordVPN an average connection time of 1.8 seconds and calls it the fastest of the five tested providers on that measure. These scores describe one test round, not a universal quality scale or a prediction of performance on your connection. TechRadar’s 2026 guide also names NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and Proton VPN among its leading options, but that is its editorial assessment rather than a controlled comparison of every plan.
How should you compare privacy and audit transparency?
“Audited” does not tell you by itself what was checked, when it was checked, or whether you can read the report. AV-TEST’s 2025 comparative report says CyberGhost, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Surfshark publish transparency reports and have undergone independent audits of security or privacy practices. The report does not make the providers’ audit scope, dates, or public availability identical.

Proton VPN’s comparison page, last updated April 2026, describes differences in access to competitors’ audit reports: it says CyberGhost’s Deloitte report is not publicly available on its site, NordVPN’s assurance engagement reports are available only to customers, Surfshark requires sign-in for its reports, and ExpressVPN requires acceptance of a non-disclosure agreement to access policy audits. These access descriptions come from Proton, a provider comparing competitors; verify current access directly before choosing.
- Read the privacy policy for what data the provider says it collects and retains.
- Check what an independent audit covered and its date, rather than treating the word “audited” as a blanket endorsement.
- Consider whether the audit report is publicly inspectable or access-restricted.
- Look at transparency reporting, jurisdiction, and ownership alongside the policy and audit evidence.
TechRadar’s 2026 guide describes Proton VPN as having an audited no-logging policy and highlights Secure Core, Stealth, and Tor-capable servers. Those product descriptions and assessments are time-sensitive; check current plan and app details if a particular feature is important to you.

Which alternative is better for streaming?
No provider can be treated as a permanent solution for every streaming catalog. Access can differ by platform, region, server, and date, and test results do not establish what every subscriber will see.
In its 2025 comparative report, AV-TEST listed ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Surfshark among the tested services with validated access to US Netflix. CyberGhost was among the products excluded from that particular US Netflix compatibility finding. This is a result for that report’s product set and test period, not proof of a current or permanent limitation.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
TechRadar’s Proton VPN testing found access to several desired Netflix libraries, but reported that some services required trying another server or disabling NetShield; it did not access TVNZ Plus during its tests. Surfshark’s 2026 provider comparison says Surfshark, NordVPN, and ExpressVPN support major streaming services, listing Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, YouTube/YouTube TV, and Apple TV. That is a vendor-published, time-sensitive claim rather than a guarantee of access.
If one specific service matters, check the provider’s current support information and cancellation terms, then test it during the period in which you can still change plans. Don’t assume that a result for one platform or country applies to another.
Can you cover every device through a router?
A VPN-compatible router can route traffic for devices that do not offer a convenient VPN app, but it is a setup path—not a reason to choose a provider before checking compatibility. AV-TEST’s 2025 report describes manual router setup for some tested services and excludes CyberGhost from that test feature. That finding applies to the report’s tested products and period; it does not establish what every current router or service supports.
- Check the router manufacturer’s documentation for VPN client support and the protocols it accepts.
- Check the provider’s current router instructions for that model or supported protocol, and confirm which subscription features apply.
- Follow the provider’s configuration steps and verify that connected devices use the VPN before relying on the setup.
Do not assume that a router being VPN-compatible means it supports every provider’s configuration or app features.

Replacing a VPN is not automatically an improvement. TechRadar’s 2026 guide characterizes CyberGhost as beginner-friendly, with decent speeds and a high unblocking score, although it ranks other providers above it. If CyberGhost already meets your needs, compare the specific feature, privacy evidence, device limit, or service access you want to change before switching; an isolated test result does not establish that another provider will work better for your devices and location.
