CVE-2026-84411

CVE-2026-84411 in MikroTik RouterOS: Reported Pre-Authentication Risk and What Administrators Should Do

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rapid7 describes CVE-2026-84411 as a pre-authentication integer underflow in MikroTik RouterOS web-management HTTP request-body handling, with a crafted request reportedly capable of causing root-level code execution or denial of service. Exact affected and fixed RouterOS versions have not been verified from a primary advisory, so administrators should not rely on version numbers published for other MikroTik CVEs.

What CVE-2026-84411 is reported to do

Rapid7’s CVE entry, published October 2, 2026, describes the flaw as an integer underflow in the handling of HTTP request bodies by RouterOS web management. The description says the issue is reachable before authentication and that one crafted request can reportedly lead to arbitrary code execution as root or denial of service. These details are secondary-source reporting; the associated CISA advisory could not be retrieved for verification.

In general terms, an integer underflow occurs when an arithmetic operation produces a value below the minimum a number type can represent, potentially making the result wrap to a very large value. The available description does not establish the vulnerable code path’s implementation details, so that explanation should not be taken as a confirmed account of RouterOS internals.

How severe is it?

Rapid7 assigns CVSS 4.0 a Base Score of 9.3 (Critical) and CVSS 3.1 a Base Score of 9.8 (Critical). These are severity ratings, not evidence that attackers are exploiting the flaw in the wild. No independently attributable exploitation statistic was verified.

Which RouterOS versions are affected or fixed?

The exact affected releases and fixed builds for CVE-2026-84411 are not established by the accessible primary-source information. Do not infer its fix from MikroTik’s September 3, 2026 security announcement: that notice lists RouterOS 7.25 beta 3, 7.24.2, 7.23.4, and 6.49.21, but names CVE-2026-67276, CVE-2026-86060, and CVE-2026-67277—not CVE-2026-84411. MikroTik’s security announcements therefore do not confirm those releases as fixes for this issue.

The CISA advisory associated with CVE-2026-84411 is CISA ICSA-26-272-06. Its exact affected releases, patch guidance, and exploitation assessment have not been verified here. Check that advisory or a CVE-specific MikroTik notice before deciding whether a particular RouterOS build is affected or patched.

What RouterOS administrators should do now

Confirm applicability before choosing a firmware target

  • Identify the RouterOS branch and exact release running on each device.
  • Check the CVE-specific CISA advisory or a MikroTik notice that explicitly names CVE-2026-84411 for affected releases and the corresponding fixed build.
  • Do not treat versions in MikroTik’s notice for the three other CVEs as the remediation target for this vulnerability.

Reduce management exposure

MikroTik’s September 2026 notice gives general RouterOS exposure guidance: keep SSH off untrusted networks, restrict manually opened SSH access to trusted IP addresses, prefer VPN access for remote administration, and avoid open management ports. This is sensible general hardening, but the notice does not establish these steps as a confirmed CVE-2026-84411-specific mitigation.

Apply a confirmed fix

Once MikroTik or the relevant primary advisory identifies a fixed release for CVE-2026-84411, follow that vendor guidance to update affected devices. The available information does not support naming a safe target version or providing a CVE-specific workaround.
