To put your logo into a prepared Photoshop mockup, replace the artwork inside the mockup’s selected Smart Object. In the Layers panel, select the artwork Smart Object, choose Replace Contents, select your file, and click Place. Photoshop swaps the source artwork while keeping the perspective, scale, rotation, warp, and other transformations already built into the mockup.
Use Edit Contents instead when you need to change the artwork itself. That command opens the Smart Object’s source file; after you edit and save it, Photoshop refreshes the mockup. The exact layer name, source dimensions, masks, and finishing layers vary from one PSD to another, so identify the artwork area in your own file rather than looking for a universal layer label.

What you need before customizing the mockup
Start with an editable Photoshop document, usually a layered PSD, and a logo or design file you are allowed to use. Keep the original PSD unchanged until you have verified the result. A practical working setup is:

- Your replacement artwork in a clear, high-quality file. Use a transparent-background file when the mockup expects transparency, and check that the artwork includes any required background or color treatment.
- Photoshop with the mockup opened and the Layers panel visible.
- A destination in mind—web, presentation, social media, or print—because the final export format and dimensions depend on that destination.
Do not assume every mockup uses the same canvas size, layer naming convention, perspective setup, or mask arrangement. Adobe’s general Smart Object instructions describe the behavior of the feature, not the construction of every branding template.

Find the artwork Smart Object
The mockup may contain many layers for shadows, highlights, background texture, color adjustments, and reflections. Your first job is to locate the Smart Object that controls the visible logo, label, screen, sign, package panel, or other branding surface.
- Open the PSD and choose Window > Layers if the Layers panel is not visible.
- Expand layer groups and inspect the thumbnails and names. Look for a layer whose preview or visibility corresponds to the artwork area you want to replace.
- Toggle the suspected layer’s eye icon off and on. If the branding artwork disappears and returns, you have likely found the correct layer.
- Click the layer itself, not a nearby shadow, highlight, mask, or adjustment layer. A Smart Object layer has a Smart Object badge on its thumbnail in Photoshop.
- If several Smart Objects control different surfaces, test each one separately. A box front, side panel, lid, and hang tag may each have its own source.
Finding the right layer matters: Replace Contents acts on the selected Smart Object only. Selecting a normal pixel layer or an effects layer will not update the intended artwork source.
Replace the logo or design with Replace Contents
This is the fastest route when you already have the finished artwork and simply want to substitute it for the placeholder.
- In the Layers panel, select the Smart Object that represents the mockup artwork.
- Right-click the Smart Object layer.
- Choose Replace Contents from the context menu.
- Browse to your logo or design file and select it.
- Click Place. Photoshop updates the Smart Object and returns to the mockup document.
- Review the entire composition at 100% zoom and at the intended viewing size. Check edges, transparency, colors, and whether any part of the logo is hidden by the mockup’s existing layers.
- Save the customized PSD under a new filename. Keep the layered file before making a flattened export.
Adobe’s Photoshop help page, last updated December 2, 2025, describes the result this way: “The new file replaces the original, retaining all transformations intact.” In practical terms, the replacement inherits the Smart Object’s existing scale, rotation, skew, distortion, perspective transformation, or warp. You normally do not need to manually recreate the mockup’s perspective after replacing the source.
This command is different from placing a new image over the document. A newly placed layer sits above the mockup and has no automatic relationship to the original Smart Object’s transformations, masks, or finishing treatment. Replacing the contents updates the source that the mockup was built to display.

Edit the source artwork with Edit Contents
Choose this method when the placeholder design is close to what you need and you want to revise text, colors, layout, or multiple elements rather than substitute a separate finished file.
- Select the artwork Smart Object in the Layers panel.
- Choose Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents.
- Photoshop opens the Smart Object’s source in the application associated with that format. Depending on the file, this may be another Photoshop document or a different associated editor.
- Make the design changes in the source document. Keep the source canvas and existing artwork structure unless you have a reason to change them.
- Save the source document.
- Return to the mockup document. Photoshop refreshes the Smart Object, and any linked instances update from the saved source.
- Save the mockup PSD after checking the result.
Edit Contents is useful for a logo lockup with separate wordmark and symbol layers, a label that needs revised legal text, or a design that requires color and spacing adjustments. It changes the Smart Object’s source rather than importing a different file into the mockup.

If the artwork is complete, start with Replace Contents. If the artwork still needs design work, use Edit Contents and save the source when finished.
Why Smart Objects are valuable in branding mockups
Smart Objects preserve the source image content and quality while allowing nondestructive transformations. Photoshop can scale, rotate, skew, distort, apply perspective transformations, and warp the Smart Object without immediately discarding the original source. That is why a single logo can appear convincingly on an angled package, sign, device, or garment while remaining replaceable.
This nondestructive structure also makes iteration safer. You can test several logo files, return to the original source, or revise the design without rebuilding the mockup’s transformation setup. A linked Smart Object can also update when its external source changes, which is useful when the same artwork feeds more than one document.

Preserve that structure for as long as possible. Rasterizing the Smart Object turns it into pixels and removes the convenient source replacement workflow. Rasterization may be appropriate for a deliberate final effect, but it is a poor first step when you expect revisions or multiple brand variants.

What you cannot do directly on a Smart Object
Adobe notes that you cannot paint, dodge, burn, or clone directly on a Smart Object layer unless you convert it to pixels. That limitation often appears when a designer tries to retouch a logo surface after replacing the source.
Use one of these approaches instead:
- Edit the artwork through Layer > Smart Objects > Edit Contents when the change belongs in the source design.
- Add a separate pixel or adjustment layer above the Smart Object for finishing work that should remain outside the source.
- Duplicate and rasterize a working copy only when a pixel-level operation genuinely requires it, while retaining the original Smart Object layer in the PSD.
Keeping the original Smart Object alongside any rasterized or painted copy gives you a recovery path if the logo, perspective, or client instructions change.
Handle proportions, transparency, and appearance differences
A replacement file can be technically correct yet look wrong in the mockup. The Smart Object retains the mockup’s transformations, but it does not guarantee that every source has the same proportions, transparent areas, or visual weight as the placeholder.
- Unexpected cropping: The new artwork may extend beyond the source canvas or the mockup’s mask. Open the source with Edit Contents and inspect its canvas and placement.
- Large empty margins: A logo surrounded by extra transparent space may appear too small even though the file itself is sharp. Trim unnecessary space in the source while preserving any intentional padding.
- Wrong orientation: A horizontal lockup may not fit a narrow side panel. Use a suitable variant of the artwork rather than forcing extreme distortion.
- Missing transparency: A file with an opaque background can cover the mockup’s material texture. Use a source with the intended transparency or remove the background in the source document.
- Color or contrast changes: The mockup may include blend modes, highlights, shadows, or color adjustments above the Smart Object. Review the artwork with those layers enabled; do not judge the source alone.
These are properties of the particular PSD, not universal Photoshop requirements. If the file includes masks or clipping structures, leave them intact while you test the replacement and only change them when the mockup’s own instructions require it.

Troubleshoot a replacement that does not work
The Replace Contents command is missing
Confirm that you selected a Smart Object layer rather than a group, mask, adjustment layer, or ordinary pixel layer. Click the layer thumbnail and look for the Smart Object badge. If no such layer exists, the file may not be built for one-click replacement; inspect its layer structure or ask the template creator for the intended workflow.
The wrong part of the mockup changes
Undo the replacement, then test candidate layers by toggling visibility. Complex files can contain separate Smart Objects for multiple surfaces. Select the one whose visibility controls the exact artwork area you need.
The logo appears stretched or misplaced
Open the Smart Object with Edit Contents and inspect the source canvas, artwork bounds, orientation, and transparent margins. Replace the source with a better-fitting variant or adjust the source artwork, then save it so the mockup refreshes.
The artwork looks flat or loses the material effect
Check that the mockup’s shadow, highlight, texture, and adjustment layers remain visible above or around the Smart Object. Replacing the source should not require deleting those finishing layers; hiding one can remove the realism the template was designed to provide.

Save the Smart Object source document, return to the mockup, and allow Photoshop to refresh it. If the file is a linked Smart Object, verify that you saved the external source at the location the document is using. A source that was edited but not saved cannot update the mockup.

Keep an editable production file
Save the working mockup as a layered PSD with Smart Objects intact. Use a descriptive filename that identifies the brand, version, and date, and keep the original template in a separate untouched location. This preserves the ability to produce alternate logos, colorways, placements, and client revisions without starting over.
Before delivery, inspect the file at full size and at the size where it will actually be seen. Check small text, thin strokes, edges against the mockup material, and any areas where the artwork passes under a mask or effect. If another person must revise the file, keep the layer groups organized and avoid flattening the document prematurely.
Export the finished mockup for its destination
There is no single export setting that is correct for every branding mockup. Choose the format, pixel dimensions, color profile, and compression level according to the destination and the requirements of the particular file or client.

- For a website or presentation, use the dimensions and image format required by that channel, then inspect the compressed result for halos or unreadable small details.
- For print, follow the printer or production team’s specifications rather than applying a universal resolution or color-profile rule.
- For review, provide a flattened viewing copy while retaining the layered PSD as the editable master.
- Export a copy instead of overwriting the source PSD, so future edits still have the original Smart Object and layer effects.
When the destination requirements are unknown, ask for them before exporting. The mockup’s visual construction and the final delivery specification are separate decisions.
