To customize a 3D typography template in Photoshop, choose a Photoshop-compatible PSDT file, inspect its layer structure before licensing, open it through Photoshop’s Stock-template workflow, and edit only the text and design layers the file exposes. Editable type does not guarantee that every depth, lighting, texture, or material effect can be rebuilt from one text layer, so verify the actual template before committing to it.
What a customizable 3D typography template is
A 3D typography template is a prebuilt Photoshop composition that gives lettering a dimensional appearance through layer styles, artwork, masks, images, and other effects. Your job is usually to replace the sample wording, adjust the type, and adapt the surrounding design rather than construct the entire effect from scratch.

The word template does not mean every component is editable. A file may expose editable type layers while keeping some highlights, shadows, extrusions, textures, or lighting as raster artwork or smart-object content. Treat editability as a property of the individual file, not as a promise attached to the category.

1. Choose a Photoshop-compatible template before licensing
Adobe Stock’s 3D typography template results include assets for Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and other Adobe applications. Filter each candidate by its application and file type. For this task, look for a Photoshop template, normally identified by the PSDT format, rather than assuming that every result opens in Photoshop.

Inspect the listing details
- Confirm that the application is Photoshop and that the downloadable format is PSDT or another Photoshop-compatible format.
- Preview the artwork at a readable size so you can judge whether its perspective, lighting, color treatment, and letter shapes fit your project.
- Look for information about editable text, smart objects, linked images, fonts, and required assets. If the listing does not explain which parts are editable, plan to inspect the file after opening it.
- Review the licensing prompt and make sure your Adobe Stock entitlement or credits cover that particular asset.
One listing, 3D Colored Text Effect, is identified as a Photoshop template with a PSDT file and dimensions of 4000 × 3000 pixels. It requires a license before it can be saved to a library. Those specifications describe that individual listing; they are not a universal size, price, or licensing rule for all 3D typography templates.
Compare candidates on four practical criteria

2. License and open the template in Photoshop
Adobe’s documented workflow is designed to create a working copy, leaving the original Stock template unchanged. Use this sequence in the current desktop Photoshop interface:
- Choose File > New.
- In the New Document window, browse the template category or search for a term such as 3D typography.
- Select a candidate to preview it. Confirm the application, format, canvas dimensions, and visible layer or editability information.
- Choose Download, then read the Stock licensing prompt. Complete licensing with the entitlement or credits available to your account.
- Open the downloaded asset. Photoshop may ask to sync fonts used by the template; allow the fonts to sync if you have the rights to use them.
- Work in the PSD copy that Photoshop creates. Adobe documents PSDT as the template extension and PSD as the working document created when a PSDT is opened.
Adobe’s Help Center describes the result this way: “You can now edit layers, replace images, modify text, and customize the design, the changes affect only the working copy while original template remains unchanged.” The workflow is documented in Create documents from Stock templates in Photoshop on desktop, last updated October 5, 2026.

Licensed templates are placed in the Stock Templates Creative Cloud library. In Photoshop, open Window > Assets to access that library and reopen a licensed template when needed. You still edit a working document; changes to that document do not rewrite the original Stock asset.

3. Map the layer structure before changing anything
Start in the Layers panel and expand every group. Rename or note the layers that contain the sample wording, background, shadows, highlights, extrusion, texture, and any image placeholders. This inventory prevents you from editing a decorative copy of the text while the visible headline remains unchanged.
Recognize the common layer types
- Type layers: show a text-layer icon and allow wording, font, size, alignment, and color changes.
- Smart objects: may contain a separate editable document. Double-clicking the thumbnail opens that content for editing, after which you save and return to the main composition.
- Raster image layers: contain fixed pixels. You can transform or retouch them, but changing the original lettering usually requires painting, masking, or replacing the layer.
- Adjustment layers and layer styles: control color and appearance without necessarily containing the geometry of the 3D form.
- Clipping masks and linked layers: constrain an effect to another layer. Moving or renaming the base layer can break the intended appearance if the relationship is not preserved.
Save a personal working version immediately after opening. Keep the original layer names and groups until you understand the dependencies, then use Save As to create your project file. This gives you a clean recovery point if an effect stops updating.
4. Replace the editable wording
When the sample headline is a genuine type layer, select the Type tool, click inside the text, and replace the wording. Use the Character and Paragraph controls to set the font, weight, tracking, leading, alignment, and color exposed by the template.

- Select the visible headline layer in the Layers panel.
- Choose the Type tool and click in the text on the canvas, or double-click the type-layer thumbnail.
- Press Ctrl+A on Windows or Command+A on macOS while editing the layer, then enter your wording.
- Adjust font and size in the on-canvas options or Character panel. Keep the layer as type while you test the fit.
- Commit the edit with the checkmark in the options bar or by selecting another tool.
- Check every duplicate text layer in the group. Some templates use separate layers for a face, outline, shadow, or reflection, and only one may contain the wording.

Fit a new phrase without destroying the effect
A longer phrase can extend beyond the perspective or shadow treatment. First try a smaller type size, tighter tracking, or a different font with similar proportions. Then inspect masks and clipping boundaries. If the template uses separate duplicate layers, update each one rather than scaling a single visible copy and leaving the dimensional copies misaligned.
Do not rasterize the type merely to force a transformation. Rasterization removes the normal vector-based text editing workflow. Photoshop also rasterizes text in Bitmap, Indexed Color, and Multichannel color modes, so check the document’s color mode before troubleshooting a type layer that will not behave as expected.
5. Customize colors, images, and surrounding design
After replacing the wording, adjust the design elements the file actually exposes. Select a fill or gradient layer to change the face color, use adjustment layers for global color changes, and edit a smart object when the template uses one for a logo, photo, or texture. Replace image content only through the layer or smart-object workflow supplied by that file.

- Text content, font, size, alignment, and spacing on unlocked type layers.
- Colors controlled by solid-color fills, gradients, adjustment layers, or layer styles.
- Images contained in replaceable smart objects or clearly labeled image layers.
- Background colors, simple overlays, and opacity settings on unlocked layers.
What may remain fixed
- Rasterized letter faces or extrusions with no source type layer.
- Lighting, reflections, bevels, and textures painted directly into a bitmap.
- Depth geometry that is rendered as artwork rather than generated from editable 3D data.
- Effects hidden inside a locked or flattened group that the template does not expose.
If a change to the type layer does not alter the visible depth, inspect the group for a second rendered copy or a smart object. The correct fix may be to edit that source, reposition a related layer, or accept that the component is fixed. Do not promise yourself that one text edit can regenerate every highlight, shadow, and extrusion.

6. Preserve quality while you work
Keep the document at the template’s native dimensions while editing whenever possible. The example 3D Colored Text Effect listing is 4000 × 3000 pixels, but other assets can use different canvases. Scaling a finished effect repeatedly can soften raster elements, so make major type and layout decisions before reducing the final output.
Leave type layers live until the wording and font are final. Keep adjustment layers, masks, and smart objects intact so you can revise the design without rebuilding it. Use group visibility to isolate the face, extrusion, shadow, and background when diagnosing an unwanted edge or color shift.

The search result opens in the wrong application
Return to the listing and verify its application and file type. Adobe Stock search results mix Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and other templates. License a result only after confirming that it is a Photoshop PSDT or a format the installed Photoshop version can open.
The text layer is missing
Expand nested groups, unlock layers, and inspect smart objects. If the sample wording is a raster image, the template does not provide normal type editing for that element. You can place new type above it, mask the old lettering, or choose a different template with an exposed type layer; none of those actions converts the original pixels back into editable text.

The font is unavailable
Accept Photoshop’s font-sync prompt when the font is available through your Adobe account, or substitute a permitted font with comparable width and weight. Recheck line breaks, tracking, and the alignment of duplicate effect layers after substitution.
Changing text breaks the 3D appearance
Look for clipping masks, linked duplicates, and smart objects that still contain the old dimensions. Update the source layer, then reposition or resize dependent layers. If the depth and lighting are baked into a bitmap, the appearance may not adapt automatically; use the template’s own controls or select a design built for easier text replacement.
The result looks soft
Check whether the text or effects were rasterized, whether the document was changed to a mode that rasterizes type, and whether a raster layer was enlarged beyond its source pixels. Return to the live type or smart-object source and make the change there before exporting again.
You cannot save the asset to your library
Review the licensing prompt for that specific Stock template and confirm that your account has an available entitlement or credit. A preview is not the same as a licensed asset, and licensing terms can differ by item.
Ready-made PSDT effect or build your own type treatment?

Choose the PSDT route when its visual treatment already fits and its editable layers match your changes. Build the treatment yourself when the template locks the critical 3D components or when the design must be reused across many phrases with consistent control.
Final pre-export checklist
- Confirm the file was licensed and opened as a Photoshop working copy.
- Verify that every intended word is on an editable type layer or an editable smart-object source.
- Check font availability, spelling, line breaks, tracking, and alignment.
- Inspect the face, extrusion, shadow, highlight, texture, and background groups at 100% zoom.
- Make sure clipping masks, linked layers, and smart objects still reference the correct sources.
- Keep a layered PSD master, then create the flattened or web-ready output required by your project.
The reliable method is therefore straightforward: identify a Photoshop PSDT template, preview its real layer structure, license that specific asset, edit the working PSD, and treat every 3D component as editable only when the file proves it is.
