According to that report, both modules were revived. One needed a hot-air reflow. The other needed a short repaired, a capacitor replaced and a new PMIC fitted.
What was sent in
The report describes two server ECC DDR5 DIMMs, one of 128GB and one of 256GB, both with physical damage. It gives no exact part numbers. The $16,000 figure is the article’s characterization of their combined value. It is not a verified sale price, and we have no independent check of the parts or the valuation. Everything below is the report’s account of the repair. It is not our own teardown or test.

The repair sequence as reported
Diagnosis: nothing obvious
A close visual inspection reportedly found no conclusive fault. A data-line tester also showed no problem. The damage was real but not easy to locate.

Module one: hot-air reflow
On the first DIMM, Tony applied flux and hot air to reflow solder. The report says the module appeared to work afterward. That wording is cautious: it does not describe a long burn-in or a full validation run.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Module two: no signs of life
The second DIMM was dead in the test system. The report says it also did not warm under a thermal camera. Tony suspected the module “may have a faulty PMIC chip.” The PMIC (power management IC) is the on-module chip that supplies DDR5’s voltages.
The report says he then used voltage injection and thermal imaging to find a short. The fixes it lists are:

- Replace a capacitor.
- Repair a short at the damaged edge of the PCB.
- Install a new PMIC.
The DIMM then reportedly powered on and trained successfully. Memory training is the start-up calibration the platform runs on the module, so it is a meaningful sign. It is still not the same as proof of long-term stability.

The report says Tony had acquired an RDIMM extension for his Unified DDR Flasher. The project README describes SPD reading and writing and DDR5 PMIC operations, and it lists DDR5 RDIMM support. None of these sources documents whether the tool is compatible with the exact modules in this job. The README also describes an ordering process, but it does not tell us whether the tool is currently available.

Does this show DIMM repair is now viable?
Tom’s Hardware frames the case as a sign that high replacement costs make DIMM repair worthwhile. That is an argument drawn from one story. We found no named, dated statistic on DDR5 price inflation, DIMM repair rates or e-waste avoided, so the case shows what is possible for very expensive modules, not a market trend.
The case also says little about ordinary desktop RAM. It involved specialist diagnostics and rework, and it is not a consumer DIY procedure. A hot-air station alone does not make this kind of repair safe or simple.

How to judge repair versus replacement
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Replacement cost | The verified current price of the exact module, not a headline figure |
| Diagnosis and labor | The shop’s fee, including if the fault cannot be found |
| Parts | Whether the PMIC and other components are available |
| Durability | How likely the repair is to last, particularly after board-edge damage |
| Validation | Whether the shop can test the module properly after repair |
| Server factors | Platform compatibility for RDIMMs and the cost of downtime while you wait |
The report does not put numbers on any of these factors. The weighing is left to the buyer, and the cheaper the module, the less likely repair is to win.
