Custom Roku Wallpapers on Roku: Add Personal Photos, Themes, and Screensavers

Roku has two different ways to put artwork on your television. Backdrops displays your own photos full-screen, while Themes changes the Roku interface with Roku-provided wallpaper, screensavers, and navigation sounds. A Backdrops photo is not automatically the background behind the Home menu. To create a personal-photo display, open Backdrops, upload images through the QR-code workflow at backdrops.roku.com, then start an image or album. To change the Home-screen look, use Settings and Themes instead.

This distinction matters because the controls, storage limits, and behavior are different. The guide below shows the exact paths, explains what each feature can and cannot do, and gives practical recovery steps when an upload or display does not behave as expected.

Roku wallpaper, Backdrops, and screensavers are separate features

The phrase “Roku wallpaper” can describe three different results. Choosing the wrong control is the most common reason a personal image appears somewhere other than expected.

What you want Roku feature What appears on screen Where you control it
Your own vacation, family, artwork, or design photo Backdrops A full-screen still image or a rotating album while Backdrops is running The Backdrops app and the Roku account upload page
A different look for the Roku menus Themes or Theme Roku interface wallpaper, a screensaver, and navigation sounds from a theme pack, or individual choices Settings > Themes/Theme
An image shown while the player or TV is idle Screensaver A screensaver application after the configured wait period Theme settings and the screensaver’s wait-time control

Roku’s instructions do not say that an uploaded Backdrops image becomes the Home-screen interface wallpaper. Treat Backdrops as a personal-photo display, not as a replacement for the menu background. Likewise, selecting a Backdrops photo does not by itself replace the screensaver.

What you need before uploading

You need a Roku player or Roku TV with the Backdrops app available, a Roku account, and a phone or another mobile device that can scan a QR code. The upload process is web-based; Roku’s documented workflow does not require a particular phone model, a USB drive, or another special accessory.

Supported image formats

Roku lists these file types for Backdrops:

  • JPG
  • PNG
  • HEIC
  • WEBP

The cited Roku instructions do not specify a required pixel resolution, aspect ratio, maximum file size, or a guaranteed cropping rule. If an image has an unusual shape, preview it on the television after uploading rather than assuming that it will fill the screen exactly as it does on your phone.

Account and album limits

Roku documents the following Backdrops limits for an account. The figures are product limits, not image-quality or performance measurements, and they remain subject to the storage limit on the Roku account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Limit Documented amount How to interpret it
Albums per Backdrops account Up to 10 All albums share the account’s available storage.
Photos in one album Up to 100 An album cannot exceed this documented count, even if you have additional account storage.
Photos uploaded in one batch 20 For a larger collection, repeat the upload in additional batches.

Roku describes Backdrops as completely free. The support instructions do not identify a separate purchase needed to upload or display your photos.

Enable Backdrops on the Roku device

Backdrops may already be installed, but it can be hidden from the Home screen. Use the following checks in order:

  1. From the Roku Home screen, look for Backdrops in the channel or app list and open it.
  2. If it is not listed, open Settings > Home Screen Menu > Backdrops and enable the entry.
  3. If your software presents Backdrops through the Streaming Store instead, search the store for Backdrops and add or open it there.
  4. Return to Home and launch Backdrops.

Menu wording can vary by device, software presentation, and region. If you do not see an item with the exact label shown above, look for the Backdrops entry under the Home-screen menu or in the Streaming Store rather than changing the screensaver settings.

Upload your own photos with the QR-code method

Roku’s documented upload path starts on the television and finishes in a browser on your mobile device. Keep the Roku screen visible while you complete the web steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Backdrops on the Roku.
  2. Select Add your photos.
  3. Choose Upload photos. Backdrops displays a QR code.
  4. Scan the QR code with your phone or another mobile device.
  5. Follow the prompts at backdrops.roku.com, signing in to the Roku account associated with the device when requested.
  6. Select files in JPG, PNG, HEIC, or WEBP format. Roku documents a maximum of 20 photos in one upload batch.
  7. Wait for the upload to finish, then return to Backdrops on the television and look for the new photos or album.

The QR code connects the device’s Backdrops session with the account web flow. If you scan it with a phone that is signed in to a different Roku account, the photos may be associated with the wrong account or fail to appear on the television you intended to use. Check the account identity before confirming a large upload.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

Organize uploads into albums

Use albums when you want separate collections, such as family pictures, travel images, or artwork. An account can contain up to 10 albums, and each album can hold up to 100 photos, subject to account storage. Because one upload batch is limited to 20 photos, a 100-photo album requires several batches. Add the batches to the same album instead of creating a new album for every upload; otherwise you can reach the account’s 10-album limit unnecessarily.

Show one photo or rotate an album

Uploading a file does not automatically put it on the screen. You must select the image or collection in Backdrops and start the display.

  1. In Backdrops, browse to the uploaded photo or album.
  2. Select a single image for a one-photo display, or select a collection when you want multiple photos.
  3. Start Backdrops using the on-screen start command or the supported control shown by your device.
  4. For a single still image, open the image-duration setting and choose Don’t Change. This keeps that image displayed instead of advancing to another photo.

A collection can run as a rotating display. The available controls and timing presentation can differ slightly by device, but the important choice is whether you start one image or an album and whether Image Duration is left to change or set to Don’t Change.

What happens when you leave Backdrops

Backdrops is the app responsible for displaying the personal image. Navigating back to the Roku Home screen returns you to the interface and its selected theme; it does not turn the Backdrops image into a permanent Home-screen background. If your goal is an idle-screen picture that appears after inactivity, configure a screensaver separately.

Change the Roku interface wallpaper

For the background behind menus and other interface elements, use Roku’s Theme controls rather than Backdrops.

  1. From Home, open Settings.
  2. Choose Themes or Theme; the exact label can vary with the software presentation.
  3. Select a theme pack if you want a coordinated background, screensaver, and navigation-sound set.
  4. Alternatively, browse the individual Wallpapers, Screensavers, or Navigation sounds sections and choose components separately.
  5. Apply the selection and return to Home to check the interface.

Roku also provides separate toggles for seasonal and sponsored wallpapers. Those controls affect Roku’s built-in interface artwork. They do not turn a Backdrops upload into a menu wallpaper. If a seasonal or sponsored image keeps replacing the look you selected, revisit the Theme settings and check those toggles.

Configure a screensaver independently

A screensaver is an application that fills the screen when the Roku player or TV is not in use. It has its own wait-time setting and is selected through Theme settings. This makes it different from both a Home-screen wallpaper and a Backdrops photo.

To use a Roku-provided screensaver, open Settings > Themes/Theme > Screensavers, choose the design, and set the wait time offered by your device. To display your own photo as art, launch Backdrops and select the image instead. The cited Roku instructions do not establish that a user-uploaded Backdrops image can be assigned as the system screensaver, so do not expect the two controls to be interchangeable.

Photo Streams has moved to Backdrops

If you previously used Photo Streams, look for those images in Backdrops. Roku states that Photo Streams has become Backdrops and that existing photos are already available there without being uploaded again. The migration changes the app name and location; it does not require you to recreate the old collection from scratch.

Troubleshooting uploads and display problems

Backdrops is missing from Home

  • Check Settings > Home Screen Menu > Backdrops and enable it.
  • Search the Streaming Store for Backdrops if the menu entry is not available.
  • Return to Home after enabling it; the app may not appear until the menu refreshes.

The QR code will not scan

  • Increase the television’s brightness or move the phone closer until the entire code is visible.
  • Open the phone’s camera or QR scanner and allow it to recognize the complete code, not a cropped portion.
  • If the code has expired or the page does not load, close the upload screen and choose Add your photos > Upload photos again to generate a fresh code.
  • Use the account associated with the Roku device when the browser asks you to sign in.

The file is rejected

  • Confirm that the file ends in JPG, PNG, HEIC, or WEBP.
  • Convert an unsupported format to one of those four types before trying again.
  • Upload no more than 20 photos in a single batch.
  • If the account is near its storage limit, remove unnecessary photos or use a smaller set before retrying.

Roku’s cited instructions do not give a per-file size limit, so do not diagnose a rejection by guessing at an undocumented number. First verify the format, batch count, account, and available storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The upload completed but the image is not visible

  • Wait for the Backdrops library to refresh, then leave and reopen the app.
  • Check every album, especially if the browser upload flow allowed you to choose a destination album.
  • Verify that the television and browser session use the same Roku account.
  • Confirm that the image was not uploaded into a different account’s album.

The image is cropped or has empty space

Roku’s support material cited here does not state how mismatched aspect ratios are cropped or stretched, nor does it publish a recommended resolution. Use an image with the composition you want, test it on the actual TV, and leave important faces or text away from the extreme edges. If the result is unacceptable, edit the image to a television-friendly shape and upload the revised file rather than relying on an undocumented Roku crop setting.

The wrong picture keeps appearing

  • Open Backdrops and make sure you selected the intended image rather than an album.
  • For a single image, set Image Duration to Don’t Change.
  • If the picture appears only after inactivity, inspect the screensaver selection and wait-time setting; that is a separate feature.
  • If the Home menu has the wrong background, return to Theme settings and choose the desired wallpaper or theme pack.

Choose the right setup for your goal

Your goal Use this path Important setting or limit
Display one personal photo as art right now Backdrops > select the photo > start Backdrops Set Image Duration to Don’t Change.
Cycle through personal photos Backdrops > select an album or collection > start Backdrops An album can contain up to 100 photos; a single upload batch can contain 20.
Change the Home-screen appearance Settings > Themes/Theme > Wallpapers or a theme pack This uses interface artwork, not a Backdrops upload.
Change what appears after inactivity Settings > Themes/Theme > Screensavers Screensaver choice and wait time are independent of Backdrops.
Recover old Photo Streams pictures Open Backdrops and browse existing albums Roku says Photo Streams has become Backdrops and existing photos are already available.

What Roku does not specify

For this workflow, Roku’s cited support pages do not establish a minimum Roku OS version, model-by-model compatibility list, recommended pixel dimensions, aspect-ratio rules, upload-size limit per file, or a precise crop algorithm. Availability and menu names can vary by device, software presentation, and region. Use the controls displayed on your own Roku and verify the result on your television instead of treating an unlisted specification as a requirement.

There is also no documented need for a special physical product purchase. A phone or tablet is used only to scan the QR code and complete the account upload. If a device cannot scan QR codes, another mobile device with a camera can perform that step; Roku’s instructions do not require a particular brand or accessory.

A practical checklist

  • Decide whether you want personal-photo art, a Home-screen wallpaper, or an idle-screen screensaver.
  • For personal photos, enable and open Backdrops.
  • Prepare JPG, PNG, HEIC, or WEBP files.
  • Scan the QR code after choosing Add your photos > Upload photos.
  • Use the Roku account linked to the television.
  • Keep each upload batch to 20 photos or fewer.
  • Keep the account within 10 albums and 100 photos per album, subject to account storage.
  • Select the uploaded photo or album in Backdrops and start it.
  • Set Image Duration to Don’t Change when one still image should remain visible.
  • Use Settings > Themes/Theme for interface wallpaper and screensavers, and check seasonal or sponsored wallpaper toggles if the appearance changes unexpectedly.
