Custom PS Vita dashboards compared with the stock LiveArea

Short answer: Keep LiveArea if you want the safest, supported and least complicated experience. Choose VitaShell when your priority is file management, package installation and FTP transfers. Choose VitaXMB when you want a PSP-style, category-based launcher for browsing games and homebrew. Neither custom option completely removes the system’s LiveArea launch behavior, and both require a modified Vita environment. An SD2Vita adapter can expand storage, but it is a storage accessory—not a dashboard by itself.

What changes when you replace LiveArea?

The PS Vita’s stock home screen is organized around application bubbles. Selecting a game or other application opens that application’s LiveArea screen, where its start button and related actions are presented. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2021 documentation says the home screen can contain up to 10 pages, and that you can open LiveArea screens for multiple applications and move between them.

A custom dashboard changes the way you browse and manage content before launch. Instead of treating every title as a bubble on a page, a shell can present files, folders, categories or a list of installed games and homebrew. The trade-off is that custom shells sit on top of a modified software environment and may still hand the final launch operation back to the system.

How the stock LiveArea works

Application-centered navigation

LiveArea is a start gate for each application. The bubble on the home screen identifies the title; opening it reveals that title’s LiveArea screen. This keeps controls and related actions close to the application, but it also means that a large library becomes a page-management problem. You browse bubbles rather than a single unified list.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Multiple open LiveAreas

The firmware can keep up to six LiveArea screens open at once. Opening a seventh closes the first one in the sequence. This is useful for moving between recently used applications, but it is not the same as a persistent task switcher or a category-based library view.

Official organization limits

Sony documents up to 10 home-screen pages and a maximum of 500 icons, counting icons inside folders. Folders are one level deep, so the stock system is suitable for broad grouping but not for a multi-level hierarchy such as platform, genre and status. You can rearrange bubbles, create folders, add pages and assign a background to each page.

Background image requirements

Sony’s 2021 guidance recommends source images sized 960 × 544 pixels for optimum clarity when used as page backgrounds. The recommendation is about image quality, not an increase in the number of pages or icons the system can hold.

What LiveArea does well—and where it stops

  • No modification: It is available on an unmodified Vita, Vita Slim or PS TV and follows the firmware’s supported behavior.
  • Predictable launch flow: The system’s own bubble and LiveArea transition are used for every application.
  • Touch-first management: Moving icons, creating folders and changing page backgrounds are handled through the built-in interface.
  • Bounded scale: Ten pages, one-level folders and 500 total icons can feel restrictive with a large homebrew or game collection.
  • No unified file view: LiveArea does not replace a file manager, package installer or FTP server.

For a small library or a stock console, these limits are often acceptable. The case for a custom dashboard becomes stronger when you regularly install packages, move files, maintain multiple homebrew titles or want a console-style category menu.

VitaShell: the utility-first alternative

What it is

The archived HENkaku project README describes VitaShell as “an alternative replacement of the PS Vita’s LiveArea.” Its core purpose is practical rather than cosmetic: it provides a file manager, package installer, built-in FTP and additional storage and content tools.

Why it suits homebrew maintenance

VitaShell is the most useful choice when your main task is managing the console rather than browsing it like a media launcher. Typical jobs include navigating storage partitions, copying files, installing VPK packages, and transferring content over FTP without removing the memory card. A file-oriented interface also makes it easier to inspect where content is stored and to perform maintenance that bubbles cannot expose.

Customization options

The project’s customization section covers colors, wallpapers, browser, editor and player backgrounds, battery graphics, icons, and dialog or context-menu images. That lets you give VitaShell a personal look, but the customization is still attached to a utility shell. It does not turn the stock system into a fully category-driven game browser.

Maintenance status

The VitaShell repository is marked read-only and was archived on 21 November 2019. That makes it a mature utility with a fixed documentation baseline, not a project whose archived page should be treated as a promise of support for every later firmware, plugin combination or launcher. Check compatibility with the exact custom-firmware and plugin stack on your Vita before changing a working setup.

VitaXMB: a PSP-style launcher with a system handoff

Interface and library model

The 2026 VitaXMB release discussion describes a horizontal, PSP-style bar with six categories. It includes a Game list for installed games and homebrew, folders, a two-level Settings layout, music playback and animated visual elements such as waves and sounds. Beta support for PSP custom themes is also listed in the release notes.

The important launch limitation

VitaXMB does not eliminate the normal LiveArea transition. Its author states that starting a game still shows the system’s LiveArea bubble transition because that transition is drawn by the system. In practical terms, VitaXMB changes discovery and presentation: you browse a category or folder, select a title, and then the Vita performs its native handoff.

Experimental features need caution

The release notes report that an experimental artwork-decryption option froze the author’s Vita once and is disabled by default. This is a project-specific warning, not a measured failure rate for all users. Leave experimental options disabled unless you have a recovery plan and are prepared to consult the current release notes for the build you are using.

Which dashboard should you choose?

Stay with LiveArea when reliability is the priority

Use the stock shell if you do not need homebrew management, if the Vita is shared with less technical users, or if avoiding modification is more important than changing the interface. Its limits are documented and its launch path is the one Sony designed and supports.

Use VitaShell for maintenance work

VitaShell is the better fit when your day-to-day activity is installing packages, moving files, checking storage locations or transferring content by FTP. It is a tool bench, not primarily a polished front end for browsing a large game collection.

Use VitaXMB for browsing and presentation

VitaXMB is the closer match for a unified launcher experience. Its categories, folders and game/homebrew list can reduce bubble-page navigation, while its music and visual features make the console feel more like a PSP-style menu. Remember that selecting a game still leads into the native LiveArea transition.

Combine roles rather than forcing one shell to do everything

A practical setup can use a launcher for daily browsing and VitaShell for file operations. Treat them as complementary tools: one organizes what you start, the other manages what is stored and installed.

Requirements before installing a custom dashboard

Modified firmware environment

Custom dashboards are not stock firmware features. The Vita Hacks Guide describes Ensō as a boot-time homebrew setup and covers Vita, Vita Slim and PS TV firmware 1.03 through 3.74. It states that Ensō is available on firmware 3.65 or below, while higher versions can be downgraded. The exact downgrade and installation path depends on the console’s current firmware and model, so follow a current, version-specific guide rather than applying instructions from an older release.

Accept the modification risk

The same guide warns: “EVERY time you modify your system, there is always the potential for an UNRECOVERABLE brick.” A custom dashboard is therefore a project for an owner who accepts recovery risk, keeps important saves backed up, and avoids mixing plugins or installers intended for different firmware versions.

Check plugin and launcher compatibility

VitaShell’s archived documentation and VitaXMB’s active development do not guarantee compatibility with every modern plugin stack. Confirm that the launcher build, kernel plugins and storage configuration are intended to work together before replacing a stable setup. Keep a known-good configuration and the files needed to restore it before experimenting.

Do you need an SD2Vita adapter?

No. A dashboard can run without an SD2Vita adapter. The adapter becomes useful when the official storage available to the console is too small for a large game and homebrew library.

What SD2Vita changes

The YAMT guide describes an SD2Vita adapter as a device that places a microSD card in the Vita’s game-card slot. YAMT can mount that microSD as ux0:, the primary storage location used by many applications. This provides a practical way to expand capacity, but it does not install a launcher and does not, by itself, modify the operating system.

Compatibility boundary

YAMT compatibility is documented for firmware 3.60 and 3.65 running HENkaku Ensō. Do not assume that the same mounting method works on every firmware or with every storage plugin. You need the adapter, a compatible microSD card, the correct mount configuration and a firmware/plugin combination supported by the guide.

Storage planning

  • Back up important data before changing mount points.
  • Confirm which device will be mounted as ux0: before moving applications.
  • Do not remove the adapter or microSD while the Vita is accessing storage.
  • Keep the original storage path available for recovery if the new mount fails.

A sensible setup and organization workflow

  1. Record the current state. Note the Vita model, firmware version, storage devices and installed plugins before changing anything.
  2. Decide whether the problem is navigation or storage. If you only need folders and backgrounds, LiveArea may be enough. If you need file operations, add VitaShell. If you need category browsing, evaluate VitaXMB.
  3. Install or update the modified environment using a current, model-specific procedure. Do not combine steps copied from guides written for different firmware versions.
  4. Test the shell before importing a large library. Launch a few known-good applications, open settings and verify that the console can return to the home environment.
  5. Plan categories before creating folders. For example, separate Vita games, homebrew, utilities and PSP-related content rather than making many shallow folders that are difficult to scan.
  6. Add SD2Vita only after the software path is stable. Configure YAMT and confirm the intended ux0: mount before copying a large collection.
  7. Keep a recovery path. Preserve backups, a known-good plugin list and the files required to return to the last working configuration.

Common problems and what they usually mean

“I installed a launcher, but I still see LiveArea.”

That is expected with VitaXMB. The launcher controls browsing, while the system still draws the normal LiveArea bubble transition when a game starts.

“My custom shell does not see applications after changing storage.”

Check the mount assignment first. If the microSD was not mounted as the expected ux0:, applications may appear missing even though the files remain on another device. Revert to the last known-good mount configuration before copying or deleting anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A visual or artwork option froze the Vita.”

Disable experimental features and return to the project’s documented defaults. VitaXMB’s release notes specifically report one freeze associated with experimental artwork decryption; that report should be treated as a warning about the option, not proof of a universal failure rate.

“The installation guide I found uses different firmware numbers.”

Stop and identify the exact firmware and model. Ensō and YAMT support is version-specific, and instructions for 3.60 or 3.65 should not be assumed to apply unchanged to another release.

Bottom line for most Vita owners

LiveArea remains the right answer for a stock, low-maintenance console. VitaShell is the practical replacement when “dashboard” really means a file manager and installation toolkit. VitaXMB is the strongest choice for a PSP-style browsing experience, provided you accept custom-firmware setup and the fact that game launches still pass through the system’s LiveArea transition. Add SD2Vita only when storage capacity—not interface design—is the limiting factor.
