If Baldur’s Gate 3 says “Can’t save right now: Game is currently syncing” and the save or load buttons are greyed out, the game has placed a save lock while a synchronization job is unfinished. The warning does not, by itself, mean your save is permanently lost. In most cases, you can isolate the cloud service or Cross-Save feature, then repair files, cache, permissions, or the local profile without deleting your original saves.
Protect your local saves first. On Windows, make a copy of the entire %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfilesPublicSavegamesStory folder before changing cloud settings, deleting cache data, or recreating a profile.

What “Currently Syncing” means in Baldur’s Gate 3
The message is a synchronization lock, not a normal gameplay restriction. Baldur’s Gate 3 will not write a new save while it is waiting for an in-game Cross-Save operation or a platform cloud operation to finish. Because loading can also conflict with the pending operation, the save and load controls may appear disabled at the same time.
A contemporaneous troubleshooting report updated April 5, 2024, associated this specific error with conflicts between Cross-Save and Steam Cloud. Larian’s own save guidance describes a broader set of causes: damaged LevelCache data, antivirus or ransomware protection blocking file writes, stale or corrupted profile folders, and cloud-client behavior.

There are two different copies to keep in mind:
- Local save: a file stored on the physical hard drive or solid-state drive of the device you are using. Larian describes this as a file stored directly on the specific PC or console.
- Cross-Save copy: when Cross-Save is enabled, your Larian Account synchronizes a copy of your last ten saves to its servers. This is not a complete replacement for local storage.
Your local files should remain available on the PC or console even when Cross-Save is enabled, but a failed cloud operation can still prevent the game from accepting another save. Treat the warning as an unresolved synchronization state until you have tested the game with the competing sync layers isolated.
Protect saves before troubleshooting
Do not begin by deleting the profile folder or accepting a cloud prompt that could replace local data. Create an independent backup first so every later test is reversible.
Windows backup
- Exit Baldur’s Gate 3 completely. Also close the launcher and wait for Steam, GOG Galaxy, or another platform client to finish any visible cloud activity.
- Press
Windows key + R, paste%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3PlayerProfilesPublicSavegamesStory, and press Enter. - Copy the complete
Storyfolder to a separate drive or a clearly named folder outside%LocalAppData%Larian Studios. Keep the original.lsvfiles unchanged. - If support later requests a save, the affected
.lsvfile in this folder is the file Larian identifies for troubleshooting.
On consoles, use the platform’s normal save-management and cloud-download controls, and avoid choosing a replace or overwrite option until you know whether the local or cloud copy is newer. The exact local-console path is not stated in Larian’s Windows-oriented instructions, so do not assume the Windows path applies to Xbox or PlayStation.

Work from the least destructive test to the most invasive repair. After each step, launch the game, load a known save, and attempt a manual save in a new slot. A successful test tells you which layer was blocking writes; it does not automatically repair an older damaged save.
1. Restart the game and isolate synchronization
First perform a full restart rather than returning to the title screen. Quit the game, close the launcher and platform client, and relaunch. If the warning returns, temporarily disable the synchronization features that can compete with one another:

- Turn off in-game Cross-Save.
- Temporarily turn off Steam Cloud, GOG Galaxy cloud synchronization, or the equivalent cloud feature on your console.
Use the platform’s own setting to disable cloud synchronization rather than deleting cloud data. Start Baldur’s Gate 3, load a local save, and try a new manual save. This is a diagnostic isolation step. A successful save shows that a sync layer is involved; it does not prove that the cloud copy or every existing save is healthy.
When testing is complete, close the game before re-enabling one service. Turn services back on one at a time, launch again, and check whether the lock returns. If the error appears immediately after re-enabling a particular service, leave that service off while preserving your local backup and contact support rather than allowing repeated overwrite prompts.
2. Update the game and platform client
Install any pending Baldur’s Gate 3 patch and update the launcher or platform client before deeper file work. Larian’s Hotfix #21, released March 7, 2024, added additional save-load error checks and serialized multiple large Xbox Cross-Save requests to reduce synchronization-related crashes. Those changes show that cross-save failures have been an acknowledged platform issue, but they do not guarantee that every current syncing incident is fixed on every build.
After updating, repeat the isolated manual-save test with Cross-Save and platform cloud synchronization still disabled. Record the game version and platform if the problem remains; those details help distinguish a current build issue from local corruption.
3. Verify the installation files
A damaged executable or data file can leave a synchronization operation incomplete. Verification replaces or repairs files while normally leaving your saves alone, but keep the backup you made in case the platform displays an unexpected cloud prompt.

Steam
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click Baldur’s Gate 3 and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity and wait for the process to finish.
GOG Galaxy
- Open the game’s entry in GOG Galaxy.
- Choose Manage Installation.
- Select Verify/Repair.
- Relaunch the game and repeat the manual-save test.
Verification checks installation data; it does not rebuild a damaged profile or guarantee that a cloud conflict has ended. Keep Cross-Save and the platform cloud layer isolated until you have confirmed that local saving works.

4. Clear the LevelCache contents
Larian lists corrupted LevelCache data as a possible cause of save problems. Clearing the cache is less destructive than deleting the profile because the game can rebuild it, but preserve your save backup first.
- Exit the game and launcher.
- Open
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3LevelCache. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the
LevelCachefolder itself. - Launch Baldur’s Gate 3 and allow it to rebuild the cache.
- Load a save and test a new manual save before re-enabling cloud services.
Do not remove the neighboring PlayerProfiles folder during this step. The cache repair is intended to leave your save files untouched.
5. Check antivirus and ransomware protection
Security software can allow the game to run while blocking the file-write operation that creates a save. Larian reports that Bitdefender, Windows Defender, Avast, and AVG have blocked the game or launcher from writing save data.
In your security product, add the Baldur’s Gate 3 executable, the Larian launcher, and the relevant Larian save directory to the product’s trusted, allowed, or controlled-folder exception list. The exact menu name differs by product and version. If ransomware protection or controlled-folder access is enabled, explicitly allow the game and launcher rather than disabling all protection indefinitely.

Restart the game after changing permissions. If saving works only while protection is temporarily paused, restore protection and create a narrow allow rule for the listed executables and save directory. A successful save after this change identifies a write-permission block rather than a cloud conflict.
6. Recreate the local profile as a controlled test
Use profile recreation only after backing up saves and after trying verification, cache clearing, and security-permission checks. Renaming is safer than deleting because it preserves a rollback copy.
- Close Baldur’s Gate 3 and the launcher.
- Open
%LocalAppData%Larian Studios. - Rename the local
Baldur's Gate 3folder, for example toBaldur's Gate 3 - old. Do not delete it. - Launch the game. It should create a fresh profile folder.
- Start a new game, reach a point where saving is allowed, and create a manual save with Cross-Save and platform cloud synchronization still isolated.
- If the new profile saves successfully, close the game and copy only a small number of backed-up
.lsvfiles into the newSavegamesStoryfolder. - Relaunch and test those imported saves. Add more files in small batches so a problematic save can be identified.
If the fresh profile also cannot save, close the game and restore the original folder name. Profile recreation is a diagnostic test for stale or corrupted profile data, not a reason to discard the original folder.
7. Reintroduce cloud services carefully
Once local saving works, re-enable only one synchronization service and test again. Keep a current copy of the working local saves before each change. Cross-Save stores only the last ten saves on Larian’s servers, so it should not be treated as the sole archive of a long campaign.

If enabling one cloud layer brings the lock back, disable it again and avoid accepting a prompt that says the local and cloud files are different until you have compared dates and kept both copies. Repeatedly launching while two services fight over the same profile can turn a recoverable lock into an overwrite or redownload problem.

8. Escalate with the files Larian requests
If a clean profile, verified installation, rebuilt cache, and permitted file writes still cannot produce a manual save, contact Larian Support. Include the affected .lsv save and the diagnostic files named in Larian’s support guidance:
runlog.txtgold.log- the altered-files report
Describe your platform, game version, whether the failure occurs with both Cross-Save and platform cloud disabled, and which troubleshooting step changed the behavior. Do not send only screenshots when the support request asks for the save and logs; the files contain information needed to identify profile, write, or synchronization failures.

What the test results tell you
The game saves with cloud features off
The local installation can write saves, so the unresolved issue is likely Cross-Save, Steam Cloud, GOG cloud synchronization, or the console cloud layer. Keep local backups, re-enable one service at a time, and stop when the lock returns.
Verification and cache clearing change nothing
Move to the security-permission check, because a healthy installation can still be prevented from writing by antivirus or ransomware controls. Check that the game and launcher are allowed, then repeat the test with a new save.
A new profile saves but old saves fail
The original profile or one of the imported .lsv files is implicated. Restore files in small groups, retain the original folder, and identify the smallest set that reproduces the error. Do not overwrite the only copy.
A new profile also fails
That result points away from one damaged save and toward a write-permission, installation, platform, or account-synchronization problem. Confirm updates, repeat the isolated test, and send Larian the requested logs if the failure persists.

- Keep periodic local copies of important campaign saves instead of relying only on the last ten Cross-Save copies.
- Use one cloud synchronization layer at a time while diagnosing conflicts.
- Leave the
LevelCachefolder in place when clearing it so the game can rebuild the directory correctly. - Keep the game, launcher, and platform client updated, especially after a patch that changes save or cross-save behavior.
- When a cloud conflict prompt appears, stop and preserve both local and cloud versions before choosing a replacement.
The greyed-out controls should clear once the pending synchronization state is resolved and the game can write to its profile again. If they do not, the backup-and-isolation sequence above separates cloud conflicts from cache, permissions, installation, and profile failures without sacrificing the original saves.
