Steam Deck is the better choice for tunable performance and controls, while Switch 2 is the better choice for a lighter console experience, a sharper handheld screen, and simple local multiplayer. The distinction matters because Nintendo officially lists Cult of the Lamb as supported on Switch 2 but says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch; the listing does not promise a separate Switch 2 enhancement mode or frame-rate target.
Steam Deck has current compatibility evidence from Valve and community reports showing adjustable play commonly settling between 40 and 60 frames per second. Switch 2 has the cleaner plug-and-play experience, but there is no controlled, same-build test proving that it renders this game at a higher resolution or maintains a specific frame rate.

Quick verdict
| Choose this platform | If your priority is | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Deck | Adjustable performance, PC controls, Steam features, and configuration freedom | Valve marks the game Verified; community reports commonly use 40–60 fps, with graphics and input options that Switch 2 does not expose. |
| Switch 2 | A lighter console, sharper handheld panel, detachable controllers, and easy local co-op | The 1920×1080 screen is sharper than Deck’s 1200×800 panel, and Joy-Con 2 can be attached, detached, or used as a gamepad. |
Neither platform has a documented, definitive advantage in every scene. Nintendo’s official wording is “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch,” so the Switch 2 edition should be treated as a compatible version rather than a confirmed enhanced port. Steam Deck’s advantage is evidence of flexibility: you can select a frame-rate target and adjust PC settings, but results vary with configuration and the game’s current build.

Nintendo’s store listing labels Cult of the Lamb “Supported” on Nintendo Switch 2 and states: “Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” That sentence is the most important qualification in this comparison. It confirms that the Switch version runs on Switch 2, but it does not advertise a Switch 2-specific visual upgrade, a new performance mode, or a locked frame rate.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
The listing supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. It gives the game a 1.8 GB file size on both Switch and Switch 2 and lists single-system play for one or two players. Massive Monster is the developer, Devolver Digital is the publisher, and the original release date is 11 August 2022.
The same listing includes the Unholy Alliance update. That update adds local two-player co-op, with one player controlling the Lamb and the other the Goat, along with tarot cards, relics, buildings, follower traits, quests, and other content. Woolhaven DLC is listed with a 22 January 2026 date. These additions are part of the content context for a new purchase, but they do not establish a Switch 2 performance enhancement.
Performance: what the evidence actually shows
Switch 2: compatible, but without a published target
Nintendo’s compatibility statement is current platform guidance, not a benchmark. It does not say whether the game is internally rendering at 1080p, whether it has a 30 or 60 fps target, or whether demanding scenes receive extra headroom from Switch 2 hardware. Do not read “Supported” as a promise of a locked frame rate.
The strongest dated performance account for the Nintendo version is Nintendo Life’s review published on 11 August 2022. In that launch-era review of the original Switch version, performance was generally consistent until busy scenes, where the frame rate became “real choppy.” The reviewer said drops could cause unnecessary damage or lost runs, reported one crash and several softlocks, and observed loading screens lasting up to 15 seconds.
Those observations describe the 2022 Switch release, not a controlled 2026 test of the Switch 2 build. They are useful historical context for why performance remains a question, but they cannot prove that Switch 2 behaves identically in every current scene. The honest claim is narrower: Nintendo documents consistency with the Switch version, while the available review evidence records problems in the original release.
Steam Deck: Verified status and adjustable headroom
Valve marks the Steam version Verified for Steam Deck. The compatibility report describes full controller support, legible interface text, and good performance at default settings. A 2026 community sample reports players commonly settling between 40 and 60 fps.

Those frame-rate figures are community observations rather than laboratory measurements. They can change with the Deck model, operating-system updates, game patches, resolution, refresh rate, power limits, and the player’s chosen cap. “Verified” means the game meets Valve’s compatibility criteria; it is not a guarantee that every scene remains at one exact frame rate.
The practical difference is control. On Deck, you can choose a lower cap for longer battery life or a higher cap for a more responsive feel, then adjust settings if a particular scene behaves differently. Switch 2 does not expose an equivalent set of PC graphics controls in Nintendo’s listing.
Battery trade-offs on Steam Deck
A 2026 community report estimates battery life for this game at about 4 hours 54 minutes when capped at 30 fps, 2 hours 53 minutes at 40 fps, and 2 hours 48 minutes at 60 fps. Treat these as indicative configuration estimates, not standardized measurements. They show the decision clearly: the jump from 40 to 60 fps can cost substantial runtime, while a 30 fps cap favors longer sessions.
If you are playing a long crusade away from a charger, a 30 or 40 fps target may be the sensible starting point. If combat responsiveness matters more than endurance, 60 fps is the higher-performance choice when your configuration sustains it. The report does not establish equivalent battery figures for Switch 2, so no direct endurance winner can be claimed from these numbers.
Visuals and display sharpness
Switch 2 has the sharper handheld panel
TechRadar lists the Switch 2 handheld display at 1920×1080 with refresh rates up to 120Hz. Steam Deck is listed at 1200×800 with refresh rates up to 90Hz. On the hardware specifications alone, Switch 2 offers more pixels and greater refresh-rate headroom in handheld mode.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That does not prove that Cult of the Lamb renders at 1920×1080 on Switch 2. Nintendo’s store page says behavior is consistent with Switch and does not mention higher-resolution assets or a dedicated visual overhaul. The defensible conclusion is about the screens: Switch 2 can present a sharper native handheld image, while the game’s actual internal resolution remains undocumented in the cited material.
The art style matters more than raw resolution
Cult of the Lamb uses flat, hand-drawn art with a deliberately cute-but-horror tone. Nintendo Life praised that presentation even while criticizing launch performance. The thick silhouettes, high-contrast colors, and readable character shapes translate well to either display, so the panel difference is most noticeable in small interface text, fine edges, and the overall crispness of the handheld image rather than in a change to the game’s artistic identity.
Switch 2’s 1080p panel is the stronger choice if you often play handheld and sit close to the screen. Deck’s 800p panel remains suitable for the game’s stylized visuals, and its larger PC settings menu lets you trade image quality against performance. There is no evidence here of a Switch 2-only texture pack or a higher-resolution version of the game.
Controls and accessibility of input
Switch 2: flexible Joy-Con 2 play
Joy-Con 2 can be used attached to the console, detached as separate controllers, or joined as a gamepad. TechRadar also describes added mouse-control functionality. That gives Switch 2 several natural arrangements: handheld play with both controllers attached, tabletop play with detached controllers, or a conventional gamepad setup on a television.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor crusades, the standard sticks and buttons provide the familiar action-game layout. The main advantage is immediacy: wake the console, resume the game, and use the same controller arrangement without configuring a PC profile. The trade-off is fewer exposed remapping and customization options than the Steam Deck offers.
Steam Deck: more ways to remap
Steam Deck combines thumbsticks, dual trackpads, a touchscreen, and rear buttons. The Steam version supports controller input, and the PC platform allows broader remapping than a fixed console control scheme. You can assign secondary actions to the rear buttons, use a trackpad for pointer-style interactions, or keep the conventional stick-and-button layout for combat.
Those options are most valuable if you have a preferred control profile, need to move actions away from the face buttons, or switch between handheld and docked play. They also introduce setup time: a Deck profile can be more powerful, but it is another layer to manage. Players who want a console that behaves the same every time may prefer Switch 2’s simpler approach.

Which controls suit combat?
Both systems provide conventional analog sticks and buttons for dodging, attacking, and navigating menus. Choose Deck when remapping, trackpads, touchscreen input, or rear buttons are central to how you play. Choose Switch 2 when detachable Joy-Con arrangements and a straightforward gamepad feel matter more than custom profiles.
Co-op and platform features
Nintendo documents one-system play for one or two players and specifically describes local two-player co-op from the Unholy Alliance update: one player is the Lamb and the other is the Goat. That makes Switch 2 a natural fit for couch sessions with Nintendo controllers, whether the console is in tabletop or TV mode.
Steam’s listing tags the game for controller support, shared or split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together. The latter can let another person join through Steam’s networked feature rather than sitting beside the same handheld. The exact experience depends on both players’ connections and controller setups, but it is a platform feature Switch 2’s single-system listing does not claim.
Both platforms therefore support local shared play, but they emphasize different ecosystems. Switch 2 is oriented around one console and Nintendo controllers; Steam Deck adds PC-style options and Remote Play Together.

Why Switch 2 feels more console-like
Switch 2 is the lighter, more appliance-like option in this comparison. Its handheld, tabletop, and TV modes are built into the console interface, and detached Joy-Con 2 controllers make a quick local session easy to start. For a player who values suspend-and-resume simplicity and does not want to tune graphics, that predictability is a major benefit.

The sharper 1920×1080 handheld panel also favors frequent portable play. Nintendo’s listing gives the game a 1.8 GB size on Switch and Switch 2, so storage requirements are modest by modern standards.
Best Value
- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
Why Steam Deck feels more like a portable PC
Deck is better suited to players who already use Steam or want access to a broader PC library from one device. Its controls, graphics settings, display options, and remapping tools provide more freedom, but they also mean more decisions. You can select a frame-rate cap, alter input behavior, and use Steam features that are not part of Nintendo’s console interface.
That flexibility is valuable when you want to balance responsiveness and battery life. The community estimates of 4h54m at 30 fps, 2h53m at 40 fps, and 2h48m at 60 fps illustrate why a Deck owner may tune the game for the session rather than simply accept one fixed target.
Price context and value
TechRadar’s 31 August 2025 list prices were $449.99 for Switch 2 and $399 for the base Steam Deck. These are dated list prices, not a guarantee of current retail pricing, availability, storage configuration, or regional taxes. Recheck the price and stock in your market before buying.
Hardware price alone does not settle value. Switch 2 may be worth more to someone who prioritizes Nintendo’s software ecosystem, local co-op convenience, and a sharper handheld screen. Deck may be worth more to someone who will use Steam library access, PC configuration, and remappable controls across many games rather than only this one.
How to choose for your playing style
Pick Steam Deck if these describe you
- You want the strongest current evidence of adjustable performance for this game.
- You prefer selecting a 30, 40, or 60 fps target to balance smoothness and battery life.
- You use rear buttons, trackpads, touchscreen input, or custom controller mappings.
- You want Steam features such as Remote Play Together and access to a PC game library.
- You are comfortable treating community frame-rate and battery figures as configuration-dependent rather than guaranteed.
Pick Switch 2 if these describe you
- You want a console-first interface with handheld, tabletop, and TV modes.
- You value a 1920×1080 handheld panel and detachable Joy-Con 2 options.
- You expect to play local two-player co-op on one system.
- You prefer not to configure graphics or input profiles.
- You accept that Nintendo officially describes the game as behaviorally consistent with Switch rather than as a documented enhanced Switch 2 build.
What not to assume
- Do not assume Switch 2 is locked to 60 fps; the official listing provides no such target.
- Do not assume Switch 2 renders Cult of the Lamb at 1080p simply because its panel is 1920×1080.
- Do not treat the 2022 Nintendo Life performance observations as a controlled 2026 Switch 2 test.
- Do not treat Steam Deck’s Verified label or community 40–60 fps reports as a guarantee for every scene, update, or configuration.
- Do not compare the community battery estimates directly with Switch 2 endurance; equivalent Switch 2 measurements are not established here.
Bottom-line recommendation
For most technically minded players, Steam Deck is the safer recommendation: it has current Verified status, community evidence of 40–60 fps play, configurable performance targets, and the broadest control options. It is the platform to buy when you want to tune the game and integrate it with a PC library.
Switch 2 is the better lifestyle choice when convenience matters more than settings. Its 1920×1080 handheld display is sharper on paper, Joy-Con 2 supports several play arrangements, and Nintendo documents easy one-system two-player support. Buy it with the understanding that the official listing promises compatibility and Switch-consistent behavior, not a bespoke enhancement mode.
