For a simple dialog fade or slide, start with CSS transitions—provided your dialog primitive keeps the element mounted long enough to play its exit. The difficult part is usually not interpolating opacity or transform; it is coordinating React’s mount and unmount lifecycle with focus, dismissal, and overlay behavior.
Choose an animation library when you need explicit presence management, coordinated or interruptible sequences, or an animation API that would otherwise require custom lifecycle code. React’s ViewTransition is a third option for projects on a compatible React release, but its API and release support are version-sensitive.

The real decision: styling versus presence
A dialog has at least three visual states: entering, open, and exiting. CSS can describe how a property changes between states, but CSS cannot animate an element that React has already removed from the DOM. That makes the close path the key design question.
If the dialog primitive changes an attribute or class and waits before removal, a CSS transition or keyframe animation is often enough. React Aria’s styling documentation describes this model: a supported overlay exposes an entering state for the start of entry and an exiting state for the end of exit, then waits for the animation to finish before removing the component. Verify that the exact dialog or overlay primitive in your application exposes equivalent states; the documentation does not establish that every React dialog component does.

If your component conditionally renders the dialog and unmounts it immediately, the browser has no mounted node on which to run an exit transition. You then need to delay unmounting yourself or use a presence-aware tool such as Motion’s AnimatePresence. The visual CSS may be identical in both implementations; the lifecycle contract is not.
At-a-glance comparison
| Approach | How entry and exit are expressed | How removal is handled | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSS on an overlay primitive | Transitions or keyframes tied to the primitive’s entering and exiting states | The primitive waits for the exit animation when it supports that behavior | A small, self-contained fade, scale, or slide |
| Motion for React | initial, animate, and exit values on motion components |
AnimatePresence keeps the component in the DOM while its exit animation runs |

Enter and exit transitions around a component added to or removed from a Transition | The View Transition coordinates the visual change; exact behavior depends on the React version and implementation | Applications already adopting React’s View Transition model |
This is an architectural comparison, not a performance ranking. The available documentation does not provide a dialog-specific benchmark, bundle-size comparison, or measured accessibility advantage for one approach.
When CSS transitions are the right default
Use CSS for a small, bounded effect
CSS is a strong default when the dialog only needs a short opacity, transform, or visibility change between two known states. A transition keeps the effect next to the component’s visual styles and avoids introducing an additional animation abstraction for one interaction. Motion’s own getting-started guidance makes the same distinction, describing “a standard CSS transition” as a lightweight solution for “simple, self-contained effects (like a color change on hover)” and positioning Motion for broader needs. Read the guidance at Motion for React: Get started.

.dialog {

.dialog[data-state="exiting"] {

transform: translateY(8px) scale(.98);

The exact state names and attributes are implementation-specific. The important contract is that the primitive exposes an entry state before the dialog becomes visible, an open state, and an exit state while the node remains mounted.
Why the close animation often fails
This pattern does not work if closing immediately changes rendered output from <Dialog /> to nothing. React removes the element before the browser can observe the transition. Common symptoms are a working entrance followed by an abrupt disappearance, or a transition that plays only when opening.
Fix the lifecycle rather than adding more CSS:
- Use a dialog or overlay primitive that documents an exit state and waits for the animation to complete.
- Keep the dialog mounted during the closing phase, then remove it from React state after the transition’s completion event.
- Adopt a presence-aware animation component when several elements or nested effects must leave together.
Do not infer lifecycle support from a component’s name. Check its close behavior, focus restoration, dismissal handling, and overlay documentation directly.

- Identify the primitive’s states. Confirm how it represents opening, open, and closing. If it has no documented closing state, plan for delayed removal or choose a presence mechanism.
- Choose properties that do not change layout. Opacity and transform are typical choices for a dialog’s visual entrance. Keep the transition limited to the properties you intend to animate.
- Define the resting state first. Write the fully open dialog styles, then define the entering and exiting styles that interpolate toward or away from them.
- Confirm that the node remains mounted. In browser inspection, the dialog should still exist while the exit styles are visible.
- Test the interaction contract. Close with the Escape key, outside-pointer dismissal, the close button, and rapid reopen actions. Check that focus returns to the invoking control according to the primitive’s documented behavior.
CSS supplies the interpolation, not the dialog semantics. Keep focus trapping, labeling, dismissal, and scroll management in the dialog implementation rather than trying to reproduce them in animation code.

When Motion for React earns its dependency
Presence management is the main reason
Motion’s AnimatePresence keeps a component present while an animation declared with exit runs. That directly addresses the immediate-unmount problem. Motion also exposes initial and animate values, so the entry, visible, and exit states are explicit in the component tree.
import { AnimatePresence, motion } from "motion/react";
function Dialog({ open, onClose, children }) {
return (
<AnimatePresence>
{open && (
<motion.div
role="dialog"
initial={{ opacity: 0, y: 8, scale: 0.98 }}
animate={{ opacity: 1, y: 0, scale: 1 }}
exit={{ opacity: 0, y: 8, scale: 0.98 }}
>
{children}
</motion.div>
)}
</AnimatePresence>
);
}
The snippet demonstrates the animation contract, not a complete accessible dialog. The actual primitive still needs a valid accessible name, focus behavior, dismissal rules, and overlay handling. Place the presence boundary where the dialog is conditionally rendered; otherwise Motion cannot observe the component leaving the tree.
Use Motion for coordination, not for a single extra property
A library becomes easier to justify when the effect has several moving parts: a backdrop that fades separately from the panel, a panel that changes scale and position, coordinated child elements, or transitions that must remain declarative while state changes quickly. A single fade does not automatically require a library. The question is whether presence handling and coordination remove more custom code than the dependency adds.

Motion-specific checks
- Keep the conditional child inside
AnimatePresenceso the exit phase can be observed. - Give the exiting element a stable identity when multiple dialog instances can appear over time.
- Decide how a rapid close-and-reopen should behave. A new open state may interrupt, replace, or wait for an exit depending on the component structure and Motion configuration.
- Make sure the animation wrapper does not break the dialog primitive’s ref, portal, focus, or positioning requirements.
- Test the no-JavaScript or reduced-motion policy your product requires; the cited material does not establish Motion’s behavior for your particular accessibility configuration.
Where React ViewTransition fits
React’s ViewTransition reference documents enter and exit transitions when a View Transition is added or removed by a component during a Transition. CSS classes can customize the visual treatment, and Web Animations API callbacks can provide imperative control. See the reference at react.dev/reference/react/ViewTransition.
This route is worth considering when your application already uses React’s View Transition model for state changes and you want dialog appearance and disappearance to participate in that system. It is not a drop-in replacement for every dialog primitive: verify the exact API, release status, and supported behavior against the React version in your project before committing to it.
Keep the same separation of concerns as with the other approaches. View Transition can coordinate visual changes; it does not, by itself, define the dialog’s accessible name, focus return, Escape handling, outside-click policy, or scroll locking.
A decision framework for a real React project
Choose CSS when all of these are true
- The effect is limited to a small fade, slide, scale, or similar state change.
- Your dialog primitive exposes a documented entering and exiting lifecycle.
- The primitive waits for the exit animation before removal, or you already have a reliable delayed-unmount mechanism.
- You do not need a coordinated sequence across several independently mounted elements.
- Adding an animation dependency would solve no concrete lifecycle or authoring problem.
Choose Motion when one of these is the blocker
- React currently removes the dialog immediately and you do not want to build and maintain delayed-unmount logic.
- The panel, backdrop, and child content need coordinated entry and exit values.
- You need a declarative animation API that can express more than a few CSS states.
- Rapid state changes, nested presence, or reusable animation variants are central to the component design.
Evaluate ViewTransition when your version supports it
- Your application already uses React Transitions in the way required by the View Transition API.
- You want CSS class customization or Web Animations API callbacks around component insertion and removal.
- You have verified the API against the exact React release and browser support policy used by the project.
Use a four-question review before merging
- What owns removal? Name the component or mechanism that keeps the dialog mounted through exit.
- What owns semantics? Identify the primitive responsible for role, labeling, focus, dismissal, and overlay behavior.
- What happens on interruption? Test close, reopen, and route changes while an animation is in progress.
- What is the maintenance cost? Count the custom lifecycle code, animation states, and dependency surface you will maintain—not just the lines in the first implementation.
Testing enter and exit behavior
Animation correctness is more than seeing a panel move. Test the dialog as an interaction state machine.
Best Value
Opening
- Open from the invoking control and confirm the initial visual state is actually rendered before the open state.
- Confirm focus lands where the dialog primitive specifies, and that the dialog has an accessible name.
- Verify that the backdrop and panel use the intended stacking and positioning while the entry effect runs.
Closing
- Close with the visible close control, Escape, and the documented outside-pointer gesture.
- Watch the DOM during the exit interval. If the node disappears immediately, no CSS transition can repair the lifecycle.
- Confirm that focus returns only after the primitive’s normal close handling, not to a removed or hidden element.
Interruption and failure paths
- Open and close repeatedly before the first animation finishes.
- Navigate away while the dialog is exiting.
- Render two dialogs in succession and ensure an old exit cannot remove the new instance.
- Disable animations in the project’s testing configuration and verify that the dialog still opens, closes, and restores focus.
The cited sources do not provide comparative accessibility results or a universal reduced-motion recipe. Treat those as project requirements to verify with your dialog primitive, browser targets, and accessibility testing process rather than as benefits guaranteed by CSS, Motion, or ViewTransition.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Entry animates; exit snaps shut
Immediate unmounting is the usual cause. Inspect the close path and either use the primitive’s documented exiting state, delay removal until the transition completes, or move the conditional child under AnimatePresence.
Neither direction animates
Check that the initial state is applied before the open state, that the transition targets a property whose values differ, and that a parent rule is not overriding opacity or transform. Then confirm the state attribute or class is actually emitted by the primitive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe backdrop exits but the panel does not
They may not share the same lifecycle boundary. Give each element the intended exit state, or place both under a presence mechanism that keeps them mounted for the same close operation.
The dialog closes visually but remains interactive
An opacity change does not itself remove keyboard or pointer interaction. Let the dialog primitive control inertness, pointer handling, focus, and removal; do not treat invisibility as unmounting.
Animation works in one dialog implementation but not another
State exposure and removal policy belong to the primitive. Compare their documented lifecycle contracts rather than assuming that a CSS selector or animation wrapper is portable between components.
Bottom line
Use CSS transitions when the dialog primitive already owns entering, exiting, and delayed removal, and the effect is a small, self-contained change. Use Motion when presence handling or coordinated declarative animation is the concrete problem. Consider React ViewTransition only after verifying its version-sensitive API in your project. In every case, keep animation separate from dialog semantics and test the complete close path—not just the pixels.
