Use mix-blend-mode when an element should blend with what is behind it; use background-blend-mode when you want to combine an element’s background images and background color. The right choice depends on which layers should participate and on their colors.
Choose the property that matches the layers

background-blend-mode does not replace mix-blend-mode when foreground content must blend with outside content. See the MDN reference for mix-blend-mode and the MDN reference for background-blend-mode.
Blend an element with the content behind it
Apply mix-blend-mode to the element whose pixels should combine with the backdrop. For example, this can make a label’s color respond to the background behind it:

}The result is calculated from the foreground and backdrop colors at affected pixels. It changes with the backdrop, so preview the effect on the actual page rather than expecting the same appearance on every background.

Blend a background image with a color
Set the color and image on the same element, then choose a background blend mode:
.photo-tint {

}This combines the element’s own background layers. If you use several background images, the mode values follow the order of the background-image list. When the number of modes does not match the number of background layers, the list is repeated or truncated to match.

Choose a blend mode by testing the actual colors
CSS provides these <blend-mode> values: normal, darken, multiply, color-burn, lighten, screen, color-dodge, overlay, soft-light, hard-light, difference, exclusion, hue, saturation, color, and luminosity. The names offer a starting point, not a guaranteed design outcome: the visible result depends on the colors and layers being combined.
- For a darkening effect, compare
multiplyanddarken. - For a lightening effect, compare
screenandlighten. - For contrast or color-component effects, test
overlay,soft-light,hard-light,difference,exclusion,hue,saturation,color, andluminosityagainst the real layers.
Check text legibility in the rendered result. A blend mode alone does not guarantee sufficient contrast or accessibility.

Control which backdrop participates
mix-blend-mode depends on the backdrop in the same stacking context. Page structure and stacking contexts can therefore change the result. If a blended group should be constrained, try isolation: isolate on its container:

}Isolation can change which backdrop is included in the blending calculation. Inspect the effect in the page’s actual structure to confirm that nearby content is excluded as intended. The W3C compositing and blending specification describes the compositing model.

Browser support
MDN labels <blend-mode> Baseline / Widely available and reports cross-browser availability since January 2020. Its reference also cautions that some parts may vary. Check the live compatibility tables for the specific modes and behavior your production design relies on: MDN blend-mode compatibility.
Troubleshoot unexpected results
- The element does not blend with the page: Check whether you used
background-blend-modewhere you meant to usemix-blend-mode. The former operates on the element’s backgrounds; the latter blends element content with its backdrop. - The effect changes in another part of the page: Inspect the stacking context and backdrop at that location. Consider whether grouping the effect with
isolation: isolategives the intended scope. - The background tint looks wrong: Verify the background layer order and mode-list order, then try another mode with the actual image and color.
- Blended text is hard to read: Recheck the rendered contrast over all relevant backgrounds; do not assume the selected mode preserves legibility.
