A film made from a protonated organic molecular cage called Cage-1 changes electrical resistance when water reaches its porous crystal. Moisture carried near a fingertip can therefore produce a detectable signal before the finger contacts the film.
Wang and colleagues built the material, measured its humidity response, and connected a 5 × 5 array to experimental touchless controls and a password-manager interface. Those demonstrations show a research proof of concept rather than a retail sensor or validated security product. The primary report is available in Nature Communications, with bibliographic details in PubMed.

What the crystalline-cage sensor actually detects
The device responds to changes in relative humidity at the sensing surface. It does not recognize a finger through a camera, an infrared beam, an ultrasonic reflection, or a standard touchscreen capacitance measurement. The unusual part is the combination of a humidity-sensitive porous crystal and a resistance readout.
Cage-1 is a protonated organic molecular cage modified with carboxylic groups. The researchers formed a sensing film from an aqueous solution and deposited that film over an interdigitated electrode. When the amount of water around the film changes, the film’s electrical resistance changes. Electronics can monitor that change and interpret a rapid local humidity disturbance as an input.

A nearby fingertip is a convenient source of that disturbance. Skin continually exchanges moisture with the surrounding air, and the thin layer of humid air near a finger can reach the film as the finger approaches. Moving the finger away lets the local humidity fall again, producing a recovery signal. The finger is therefore detected indirectly through water associated with it.
The paper calls this approach “touchless human–machine interaction.” It is more precise to describe it as humidity-mediated proximity sensing: the material senses the environmental consequence of a nearby finger, not the finger’s shape or identity.
Why Cage-1 responds to water
Three-dimensional channels
The cage crystals contain an interconnected three-dimensional pore network. Those channels provide routes through which water can enter and move through the material. A porous network gives the film a large internal interface with humid air, so a change outside the film can influence a measurable region inside it.
Carboxylic groups and hydrogen bonding
Cage-1’s carboxylic groups are water-attracting functional groups. They can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, helping the crystal absorb and transport moisture. The authors link the functional groups, the cage’s open structure, and hydrogen-bonding interactions to the observed humidity response; the study does not present the material as a generic humidity module that could be replaced by any porous powder.
From absorbed water to resistance
As water uptake changes, the charge-transport environment in the film changes as well. The resulting resistance shift is read between the interdigitated electrode fingers. A measurement circuit can sample resistance continuously, establish a baseline, and look for the direction and size of a change as a hand approaches or retreats.

How the researchers made the demonstration
- Prepare the cage solution. The team made an aqueous solution of protonated, carboxyl-functionalized Cage-1.
- Form the sensing film. They deposited the solution onto an interdigitated electrode and allowed a crystalline porous film to form over the electrode area.
- Expose it to controlled humidity. Resistance was recorded while relative humidity was varied, allowing the electrical signal to be related to water uptake.
- Test proximity. A fingertip was moved toward and away from the sensing surface. Approach and withdrawal produced corresponding resistance changes without physical contact.
- Connect multiple pixels. The researchers arranged 25 sensing elements as a 5 × 5 array and used the array as the input surface for custom interface demonstrations.
This sequence matters because the proximity effect depends on the fabricated Cage-1 film and its electrode geometry. The paper does not show that an ordinary commercial humidity sensor, by itself, reproduces the same spatial control.

The abstract of the Nature Communications paper gives the one-second response, three-second recovery, 11%–95% relative-humidity range, and more-than-800-cycle result. Those values describe the reported experiments under the authors’ conditions; they are not a guarantee of lifetime, speed, or environmental performance in a commercial device.
How a fingertip becomes a touchless command
Approach and withdrawal
When a finger moves closer, humid air associated with the skin reaches the Cage-1 film. Water adsorption changes the film’s resistance. The electronics can assign a threshold or a pattern of resistance changes to an approach event. As the finger withdraws and the local moisture concentration falls, the recovery trajectory supplies a second event or resets the pixel.
Distance is not determined by a universal “finger sensor” formula. It depends on airflow, room humidity, finger speed, skin moisture, film geometry, electrode spacing, and the signal-processing threshold chosen by the demonstrator. A system calibrated in one room would not automatically have the same detection boundary elsewhere.

Locating a gesture with an array
A single sensing element can indicate that humidity changed, but it cannot provide a two-dimensional location by itself. The 5 × 5 arrangement gives the controller multiple neighboring signals. Comparing which pixels respond, and in what sequence, lets a custom interface associate a hand movement with a position or command. The paper presents that arrangement as an experimental touchless control screen.
Why recovery time matters
A sensor that reacts quickly but remains saturated would blur successive commands. The reported three-second recovery gives the prototype a way to return toward baseline between gestures. In a deployed design, the controller would still need debouncing, baseline tracking, and rules for gestures made faster than the material can recover.
What the touchless screen and password manager demonstrate
The screen demonstration used the custom 5 × 5 array to show touchless control. It is evidence that the material can be integrated into a multi-pixel interaction experiment, not evidence that a finished display panel has been manufactured. The study does not establish brightness, resolution, durability under daily use, or compatibility with a particular operating system.
The password-manager demonstration shows that the researchers mapped sensor outputs to an interface involving password-related actions. It does not establish cybersecurity, cryptographic protection, resistance to replay or observation, or product-grade user authentication. A humidity signal can be influenced by people, ventilation, temperature, and other environmental factors; the paper’s demonstration should therefore be read as an interaction concept rather than a security certification.
How the study’s material comparisons should be read
To examine why Cage-1 behaves as it does, the researchers compared it with a cage lacking carboxyl groups, called Cage-2, and with a two-dimensional trianglamine macrocycle, abbreviated TA. These are scientific controls and structural comparators, not competing consumer products.

| Material in the study | Structural feature highlighted | Role in the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Cage-1 | Protonated organic cage with carboxylic groups and a three-dimensional interconnected pore network | Main humidity-sensing material used for the proximity and array demonstrations |
| Cage-2 | Cage lacking the carboxyl groups | Control for assessing how the water-attracting functional groups affect humidity response |
| TA | Two-dimensional trianglamine macrocycle | Structural comparison for examining the effect of a two-dimensional architecture versus a porous cage network |
The comparison supports a materials explanation: both chemical functionality and three-dimensional pore architecture influence water uptake and the electrical response. The study is not a ranking of which material a consumer should buy.
How this differs from familiar touchless systems
Many touchless interfaces use an energy source and a detector aimed at a hand. Infrared systems look for reflected or interrupted light; ultrasonic systems infer position from sound waves; capacitive systems measure changes in an electric field. The Cage-1 approach instead uses ambient water as the signal carrier.
That distinction creates a different set of design trade-offs:
- Potential advantage: the sensing layer can be a thin porous film on patterned electrodes, and the reported response occurs without requiring optical line-of-sight hardware.
- Environmental dependence: room humidity, drafts, heating, cooling, and other moisture sources can alter the baseline or imitate a gesture.
- Gesture constraints: the user must create a sufficiently distinct humidity disturbance, and the material needs time to recover between events.
- Calibration needs: thresholds and spatial interpretation must be tuned to the film, electronics, enclosure, and surroundings.
Chemistry World’s coverage describes the contrast with infrared, ultrasound, and capacitance and quotes lead author Niveen Khashab saying the sensor “exhibits an exceptional responsiveness to humidity changes.” The same article quotes University of Cambridge supramolecular-cage expert Jonathan Nitschke: “I had never heard of this application before.” These comments provide context and expert reaction; the numerical performance claims come from the primary paper.

Established by the study
- A fabricated Cage-1 crystalline film changes resistance with humidity.
- A nearby and moving fingertip can produce a measurable response without contact.
- The authors built a 5 × 5 array for touchless-control experiments.
- The paper reports approximately one-second response, approximately three-second recovery, operation across 11%–95% relative humidity, and stability over more than 800 cycles.
Not established by the study
- There is no evidence here of a marketed sensor, finished touchscreen, development kit, or replacement module.
- The experiments do not establish performance after years of use, contamination, condensation, temperature swings, or outdoor exposure.
- The reported cycle count is not a universal lifetime rating and does not specify every mechanical or environmental condition a product would face.
- The password-manager interface is not proof of secure authentication.
- No independent replication or standardized commercial specification is provided by the cited sources.
For these reasons, “touchless humidity sensor based on a crystalline cage” is an accurate description of the work, while “commercial touchless touchscreen” would overstate it.

Where the market figure fits
The article associated with the study repeats a projection of a market growing from $13.6 billion in 2021 to a projected $37.6 billion by 2026. That was a forecast quoted in a 2024 publication, and the 2026 horizon has now passed. It should not be presented as a measured current market size or as evidence that Cage-1 has reached commercial adoption.
Why the result is scientifically interesting
The demonstration expands what “touchless” can mean. Instead of adding a camera or a distance sensor, it turns a material property—water transport through a molecular cage—into an interaction channel. The same porous features that make Cage-1 responsive to humidity also explain why a human hand can act as a stimulus at a distance.
For materials researchers, the work links molecular design to an interface function: adding carboxylic groups and retaining an interconnected three-dimensional pore network affects adsorption, transport, and electrical readout. For interface designers, it suggests that humidity itself can carry a gesture signal, provided the system is calibrated for its surroundings and the limits of response and recovery are respected.
The important result is therefore not that a new retail touchscreen has arrived. It is that a carefully designed crystalline organic cage can convert fingertip-associated moisture into a repeatable electrical input, and that the authors were able to use an array of those inputs in laboratory interface prototypes.
