Ajay Shinjin, also known as AJ Marley Cruz, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison at Inner London Crown Court on 8 October 2026 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and transferring criminal property. City of London Police says he received more than £44,000 from a SIM-swap cryptocurrency theft operation and spent funds on luxury holidays in Dubai, a high-end apartment and gold-plated dental grills.
What happened in the London crypto theft case?
City of London Police says Shinjin pleaded guilty on 28 September 2026. The force described the overall theft as almost £200,000 worth of cryptocurrency across four victims. That is the reported victim loss, not the amount Shinjin personally received: police say more than £44,000 was traced to him, while some thefts he facilitated were sent elsewhere.

Detective Constable Simon Ardeman of City of London Police said: “This was a complex and calculated fraud that caused significant financial harm to a number of victims.” The force’s 8 October 2026 release sets out the plea, sentence and investigation. The Record also reported the case; the pound figures below follow the police account.
How did the SIM-swap fraud work?
In early November 2021, BT detected unauthorized activity in which customers’ telephone numbers had been moved to SIM cards controlled by criminals. Once a criminal controlled a victim’s number, they could receive one-time passcodes sent by text and use them to try to access bank accounts or cryptocurrency wallets.

Investigators used data from BT to identify devices and suspects. Police attributed four SIM-swap devices to Shinjin. SIM swapping is the transfer of a victim’s phone number to another SIM; in this case, the reported purpose was to intercept texted codes and get into cryptocurrency accounts.
How much did victims lose, and how much reached Shinjin?
City of London Police identified four victims whose incidents were reported in the first week of November 2021. The figures are approximate, as reported by the force:

|---|---|
| Around £40,000 in cryptocurrency | Roughly £27,000 was transferred to Shinjin’s personal cryptocurrency account. |
| Around £17,000 | The funds were later found in his personal wallet. |
| Approximately £8,000 from a Coinbase account | Police say Shinjin facilitated the theft, but the money was sent elsewhere. |
| Approximately £130,000 | Police say Shinjin facilitated this theft as well. |
The individual amounts are approximate and should not be treated as a more precise accounting than the police release provides. In particular, the almost £200,000 total describes cryptocurrency stolen from victims; it does not mean Shinjin personally received the full total. City of London Police says more than £44,000 was received by him.

Why were gold-plated dental grills mentioned?
Police reported the grills as one of the things Shinjin funded with proceeds, alongside luxury holidays in Dubai and a high-end apartment. They are a detail about the reported spending, not a separate allegation or a consumer recommendation.

He pleaded guilty at Inner London Crown Court on 28 September 2026 and was sentenced there on 8 October 2026. The force’s release reports the sentence and offences but does not include judicial sentencing remarks, so it does not establish the judge’s reasoning.
