It can streamline recordkeeping, but it is not automatically a complete tax return: what it can calculate depends on the records you provide, the provider’s supported sources and rules, and the tax jurisdiction and filing year.
What crypto tax software does
Most tools follow a data-to-report workflow. You connect supported accounts or enter transactions, review how activity has been classified, and generate tax calculations and filing materials.

- Import or enter activity. Bring in transaction records from supported exchanges and wallets, or add records manually.
- Reconcile and classify transactions. Review purchases, disposals, transfers, and any income-related activity the tool supports. Correct missing or ambiguous records where possible.
- Calculate tax-related amounts. The software applies its calculation rules to the records and settings you provide.
- Create reports or forms. Depending on the provider and your location, the output may be a tax form, a report, or a data export.
- Use the results in your filing process. You may enter figures into tax-preparation software, use a supported integration, or share reports with a tax professional.
For example, CoinTracker describes calculating and generating tax forms and reports from user-provided information, with country-specific forms in select regions and CSV reports available for customers elsewhere. TurboTax describes importing digital-asset activity from exchanges and wallets, including NFTs, and calculating capital gains and losses. These are provider-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every account, transaction type, tax year, or edition is supported. CoinTracker’s tax forms and reports information and TurboTax’s crypto tax page explain their respective offerings.
Does it file your tax return?
Not necessarily. Some services focus on calculating crypto-related figures and preparing reports or forms; filing may happen in a separate tax-preparation product or through a tax professional. CoinTracker’s filing instructions describe using its reports with tax software and name H&R Block and TurboTax integrations. Compatibility can depend on the report, tax year, plan, and software edition, so check the provider’s current instructions before relying on an integration. CoinTracker’s filing instructions describe its workflow.

Why the records matter
Software can only work with the information it receives and the classifications applied to that information. Missing exchange history, unrecorded wallet activity, absent cost-basis information, or an incorrect transaction classification can change the figures in a report. An import is a starting point, not proof that the resulting tax calculation is complete or correct.
Review imported activity and unresolved transactions, retain original exchange and wallet records, and check how the software handled transfers and other unclear items. The IRS discusses records used to identify specific units of virtual currency in its virtual currency FAQs. For complex activity or uncertain treatment, consult a qualified tax professional.

What crypto tax software means for U.S. taxpayers
For U.S. federal income tax purposes, the IRS treats virtual currency as property, so tax principles that apply to property transactions also apply. The IRS describes a digital asset as a digital representation of value recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger or similar technology. These are U.S. federal statements; other countries may define and tax digital assets differently. See the IRS pages on virtual currency transactions and digital assets.

What to check before choosing a tool
Features vary, so assess a provider against your own accounts, activity, location, and filing process rather than assuming every crypto tax product does the same thing.
Rank #3
- Data sources: Does it support the exchanges and wallets where your records are held?
- Transaction types: Does it handle the kinds of activity you need to report, and can you review or correct uncertain classifications?
- Jurisdiction and tax year: Does it support your country, filing year, and the forms or reports you need?
- Exports and filing workflow: Can you export a suitable report or CSV, and is any integration compatible with your particular filing product and edition?
- Scope: Does the service prepare tax returns, or does it provide crypto calculations and records for use elsewhere?
Confirm these details in current provider documentation. A provider’s feature description does not independently establish the accuracy of its calculations.
