A crypto seed phrase is a sequence of words that represents the random data a compatible wallet uses to generate or restore its keys. It is a backup to wallet access—not the cryptocurrency itself—and anyone who obtains it may be able to control the assets associated with the wallet.
What a crypto seed phrase does
A wallet uses cryptographic keys to control cryptocurrency recorded on a blockchain. A seed phrase is a human-readable backup of key-generating material: a compatible wallet can use it to recreate the keys, including when the original device is lost, stolen or broken. Bitcoin.org describes a recovery phrase as a sequence of words from which a wallet can be restored (Bitcoin.org FAQ).

“Seed phrase,” “recovery phrase” and “mnemonic phrase” are often used for this backup, but wallets do not all use identical standards or recovery procedures. It is not a conventional account password, and it is not a record of coins stored in the words themselves.

BIP-39 is a deployed specification for making computer-generated randomness easier to back up. It is not a method for turning a sentence chosen by a person into a secure wallet seed. The process starts with random entropy, adds checksum bits derived from SHA-256, splits the result into 11-bit groups, and maps those groups to words in a specified list. The mnemonic is then converted to a 512-bit seed using PBKDF2 with HMAC-SHA512 and 2,048 iterations (BIP-39).

BIP-39 defines five word counts. The numbers below are the standard’s mappings from initial entropy, not a universal rule for every wallet.

How a passphrase affects recovery
BIP-39 can combine the mnemonic with an optional passphrase to derive the wallet seed. This passphrase is separate from the phrase itself. Under the standard, every passphrase produces a valid seed, so entering the wrong one may open a different wallet rather than trigger an obvious error. To recover the intended wallet, the words and any passphrase used when it was set up must be entered correctly (BIP-39).

Why a seed phrase is sensitive
Anyone who gets the phrase may be able to access the associated wallet assets. Treat it as a secret that grants control, not as information to share with support. Ethereum.org says legitimate services, support agents and websites will not ask for a recovery phrase (Ethereum.org security guidance).
- Keep it private; do not enter it into an unfamiliar site or send it to someone offering to recover funds.
- Avoid screenshots and cloud-synced photos. Bitcoin.org advises against photo or cloud storage, and Ethereum.org warns that screenshots may sync to cloud providers (Bitcoin.org wallet security; Ethereum.org security guidance).
- Keep an offline backup in a place protected from unauthorized access and physical damage.
What can prevent a wallet from being restored?
A phrase is useful only when the recovery method is compatible with the wallet’s setup. The supported standard, wordlist, exact word spelling and order, and any optional passphrase can all matter. BIP-39’s checksum can detect some mistakes, but it does not correct them or guarantee that every error will be caught.

Do not assume that every wallet accepts the same phrase format or number of words. For example, Coinbase Wallet documents a 12-word recovery phrase for its product; that is a product-specific instruction, not a universal standard (Coinbase Wallet backup guidance). When restoring, use the wallet provider’s official recovery flow and preserve the phrase exactly as recorded.
