Brooklyn prosecutors say a multinational cryptocurrency investment operation stole tens of millions of dollars from Russian-speaking Americans and then used information from the first fraud to target victims again. On October 14, 2026, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Virtual Currency Unit announced that, with FBI cooperation, it had disrupted 241 scam domains and 112 servers tied to the operation.
The alleged scheme had two stages: a fake investment platform took victims’ money, and a later “recovery” approach promised to get the cryptocurrency back—usually in exchange for another payment.

How the alleged investment scheme worked
Russian-language ads led to fake advisers
Recruitment began with Russian-language investment advertisements on Facebook. Callers posing as Russian-speaking investment advisers coached targets through opening accounts on fraudulent cryptocurrency platforms, buying digital assets and transferring them to wallet addresses controlled by the operation, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

Blocked withdrawals created the first crisis
Victims later discovered that withdrawals were blocked. Some were told they had to pay additional fees or taxes before their funds could be released. In some cases, prosecutors say, people lost their entire life savings.

The same victims were approached again
Recovered server data showed that operators contacted victims a few weeks after the initial fraud and promised to recover the missing cryptocurrency. The second contact was not a separate act of customer service; it was another alleged attempt to monetize the victim’s loss. The criminals already had contact details, identity information and transaction context that made the recovery pitch sound credible.
“These criminals stole many millions of dollars from Russian-speaking victims through an elaborate investment scheme, then tried to exploit them again with false promises to recover their money,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said on October 14, 2026.

What investigators disrupted—and what they recovered
The Brooklyn DA said the operation involved 241 web domains and 112 servers. The office estimated that tens of millions of dollars had been stolen. Approximately $300,000 had been seized when the release was issued, a fraction of the alleged losses.
The latest action follows about 400 domains that the Brooklyn DA’s Virtual Currency Unit had previously seized or disrupted. Those figures describe infrastructure actions and estimated losses, not a final victim count or a completed restitution program.

Why the recovery pitch is so convincing
A recovery scam exploits the victim’s urgency and the information gathered during the first crime. Someone who knows the victim’s name, the platform used, the approximate amount lost or a wallet address can appear to be an investigator who has inside access. The caller may use official-sounding language, claim a connection to law enforcement or send a technical-looking tracing report.
The FBI’s recovery-fraud warning says these solicitations can arrive through social media, messaging services, search results and comment sections. Warning signs include an upfront fee, a demand for a tax or tracing payment, incomplete or inaccurate tracing reports and a false claim of FBI affiliation. A legitimate law-enforcement investigation does not require victims to pay a fee.

Recovery solicitation versus an official report
| Check | Recovery solicitation | Official reporting route |
|---|---|---|
| Payment | Often demands an upfront fee, tax or tracing charge, according to the FBI. | Law enforcement does not charge victims a fee to investigate a crime. |
| Authority | May falsely claim an FBI or other law-enforcement connection. | Report through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and local law enforcement; verify any claimed FBI affiliation through an FBI field office. |
| Power to seize assets | A private company cannot issue a seizure order. | Asset seizure is a law-enforcement or court process, not a service a private provider can authorize for itself. |
| Tracing material | Reports may be incomplete or inaccurate. | Provide investigators with the original records and preserve the evidence used to assess the transaction. |
What to do if someone offers to recover your crypto
- Do not pay. Do not send a recovery fee, tax, “release” charge or cryptocurrency to the person who contacted you. Do not provide additional identity or account information.
- Preserve the evidence. Save wallet addresses, transaction hashes, messages, emails, advertisements, phone numbers and payment records. Keep copies before blocking or deleting a contact.
- Report both approaches. File a report about the original investment fraud and the later recovery solicitation with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and your local law-enforcement agency.
- Check claimed FBI ties independently. Use an FBI field office to verify an alleged affiliation rather than relying on a phone number, email address or link supplied by the solicitor.
What the public record does not yet establish
The Brooklyn DA’s release did not state how many victims received the second-round recovery offers or whether anyone paid those demands. It also did not identify the alleged operators, announce arrests or provide a restitution timetable. Those details should not be inferred from the domain and server seizures or from the estimated loss figure.
The wider warning for crypto-fraud victims
The FBI reported that more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment fraud losses were reported in 2022. The Brooklyn case shows why a victim should treat an unsolicited promise of recovery as a possible continuation of the original fraud, especially when the contact demands money first or claims powers that a private company does not have.

A recovery offer can sound personalized because the criminals may have obtained real details during the investment scam. That familiarity is not proof of access to funds, a government mandate or a legitimate tracing capability. The safest response is to stop the payment, preserve the records and use official reporting channels.
