Crypto scam warning signs: A practical checklist for fake brokers and recovery services

A crypto offer is likely fraudulent when an unsolicited contact promises guaranteed or unusually high returns, rushes you to act, directs funds to a stranger-controlled wallet, or demands a tax or fee before withdrawal. A polished dashboard, app, video call, or claimed license does not prove the business is real. Treat any person who appears after your loss with a guaranteed recovery promise as a possible second scam.

The eight warning signs that matter most

1. An unsolicited contact turns into an investment pitch

Be cautious when an unknown person, dating-app match, wrong-number texter, or social-media contact introduces a crypto opportunity. The FBI and Federal Trade Commission describe unsolicited messages and online relationships as common entry points for fake investment platforms. Relationship grooming can continue for days or weeks before the investment request appears, so familiarity is not independent verification.

2. Returns are guaranteed, risk-free, or implausibly high

Legitimate investments carry risk. Promises of “guaranteed,” “risk-free,” or unusually high profits are classic fraud signals. A joint Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission alert specifically cites claims such as 20–50% returns with little or no risk as examples used by fraudulent sites. The agencies’ warning is direct: “All investments have risk, and investors should question any so-called ‘guaranteed’ return.”

3. Pressure, secrecy, and isolation replace due diligence

Fraudsters manufacture a deadline, claim an allocation will disappear, or insist that you keep the opportunity from family, friends, or financial professionals. Urgency prevents second opinions and makes an unusual payment feel like a test you must pass. A genuine investment decision should tolerate time for independent checks.

4. The identity, domain, or app cannot be verified independently

Inspect the spelling of the web address, the domain registration details, published contact information, and the app’s source. The FBI warns about domains that impersonate real institutions, misspelled URLs, and suspicious investing applications. A logo, certificate image, or “regulated” label on the site is only a claim until confirmed through the regulator or institution’s own official website.

5. A convincing dashboard shows balances you cannot prove

Fake platforms can display account balances, charts, deposits, and profits that exist only in their database. The FTC cautions that an investment site may look real while the promised investment and account growth are fabricated. A number on a screen is not evidence that a blockchain transaction occurred or that you control the underlying assets.

6. You are told to convert money and send crypto to a stranger-controlled wallet

A common fraud flow is an instruction to buy or convert cryptocurrency and transfer it to a wallet selected by the contact. Once sent, crypto transactions are generally difficult to reverse. Do not treat a wallet address, QR code, or “escrow” explanation as proof of ownership or protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Withdrawal requires a tax, release fee, deposit, or other payment

A demand to pay before you can withdraw supposed profits is a stop signal. The FBI, FTC, CFTC, and SEC all identify taxes, fees, and additional deposits used to unlock an account as part of the fraud pattern. A new payment normally produces a new obstacle rather than access to funds.

8. A recovery service contacts you after the loss

After a victim reports a loss, another person may pose as a law firm, tracing company, government official, or recovery expert. Warning signs include an upfront fee, requests for bank or identity data, messaging-app-only communication, an implausible office address, and repeated demands for more fees. The FBI’s Operation Level Up warning is unambiguous: “Do not pay for services that claim to be able to recover lost funds, as these are often scams as well.”

How to vet a broker or platform before sending money

Use the same checks for a website, mobile app, social-media pitch, or a person who claims to represent a licensed business. Complete the checks yourself; do not use a phone number, email address, or link supplied by the person who solicited you.

Check What independent verification looks like Stop signal
Identity and registration The legal name, address, and registration can be confirmed through the relevant regulator or institution’s official contact channel. The contact supplies only screenshots, badges, or a registration number that cannot be matched independently.
Domain and app authenticity The spelling, domain, publisher, support address, and download source match information published by the real organisation. A look-alike domain, misspelling, recently presented app, or contact detail that exists only on the pitch page.
Return and risk claims Risks, fees, and performance are explained without guarantees; you can take time to review them. “Guaranteed,” “risk-free,” or 20–50% returns with little or no risk.
Communication style You can ask questions, consult others, and decline without consequences. Countdowns, secrecy instructions, threats of lost access, or pressure to move the conversation to a private channel.
Wallet and payment destination You understand who controls the account and can verify the destination through a trusted channel. Instructions to send crypto to a stranger’s wallet or to buy through an unfamiliar service.
Withdrawal terms Costs and procedures are clear before any deposit, with no surprise condition to release your own funds. A tax, release fee, insurance payment, verification deposit, or “temporary” charge appears only after profits are shown.
Data requests Only information required by a verified organisation is requested through its established systems. Early requests for bank credentials, identity documents, seed phrases, one-time codes, or remote access.
How contact began You initiated contact through a source you already trust. The offer began with an unknown person, dating match, wrong-number text, or unsolicited social message.

One warning sign can justify stopping. Several together indicate that continuing to test the platform increases your exposure rather than proving it legitimate.

What to do if you have already paid

  1. Stop additional transfers. End payment instructions and do not send a withdrawal tax, release fee, recovery deposit, or any “final” amount.
  2. Preserve evidence before deleting accounts or chats. Save wallet addresses, transaction hashes, dates, amounts, exchange names, website addresses, app details, usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, and the complete conversation history. Keep screenshots and original files where possible.
  3. Secure accounts and devices. Change passwords that were reused, enable multifactor authentication, and review email, exchange, banking, and cloud sessions for unfamiliar access. If you shared identity or bank information, expect follow-on fraud attempts and monitor those accounts.
  4. Contact legitimate services through verified channels. Use contact information found on the organisation’s official website, not details in the message. Ask your bank, card issuer, or exchange what protective actions remain available, without assuming a payment can be reversed.
  5. Report promptly. File an Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report with the FBI and consider reports to the FTC, CFTC, SEC, and local law enforcement as appropriate. Include the transaction and contact details requested by the reporting system.

Fast reporting does not guarantee reimbursement, but wallet addresses, transaction hashes, timestamps, amounts, and contact identifiers give investigators usable leads. Do not pay anyone who claims that a report or a fee guarantees recovery.

How to recognise the second scam

Why recovery promises are persuasive

A victim may be actively searching for help, making a new approach feel like a lifeline. The caller may already know the amount lost, the platform name, or personal details because criminals share victim lists or reuse information submitted to the first fraud. Familiarity with your case is not proof of a government connection, legal authority, or tracing capability.

Questions that expose an unverified service

  • Can you verify the organisation, attorney, or investigator through a regulator or bar directory using contact information you found independently?
  • What exact legal entity will receive payment, and why is an upfront fee required before any documented action?
  • Will the service guarantee a result, demand cryptocurrency, or keep adding charges for taxes, bonds, conversion, or release?
  • Does the alleged office have a verifiable address and normal business communications rather than only a messaging app?

Private crypto-recovery providers do not have a reliable industry-wide success rate published by the agencies cited here. No agency promises that reporting will recover funds. Treat guaranteed recovery, especially after an initial fee, as another fraud warning.

Where the losses stand

The scale explains why these approaches are persistent. The FBI reported more than $5.6 billion in cryptocurrency-fraud losses for 2023, released September 9, 2024—45% higher than in 2022. The FTC stated in a July 2024 consumer alert that consumers reported $4.6 billion in investment-scam losses during 2023. These figures are reported losses, not a prediction of what any individual victim will lose.

The FBI’s Operation Level Up illustrates the value of early intervention. By January 2025, it had notified more than 4,300 potential victims and estimated that its notifications saved $285 million. Notification and reporting can prevent additional transfers even when the original transaction cannot be undone.

A printable decision checklist

  • Did an unknown person initiate the contact?
  • Are returns guaranteed, risk-free, or far above normal market uncertainty?
  • Am I being rushed, isolated, or told to keep the opportunity secret?
  • Have I independently confirmed the legal entity, domain, app publisher, and registration?
  • Could the displayed balance be fabricated rather than verified on a blockchain or trusted account?
  • Am I being told to send crypto to a wallet controlled by someone I do not know?
  • Has a tax, fee, deposit, or other payment appeared as a condition of withdrawal?
  • Has anyone contacted me after the loss promising guaranteed recovery?

If any answer is yes, pause the transaction, preserve the evidence, verify contacts independently, secure exposed accounts, and report through the appropriate official channels. The checklist helps identify danger and limit further loss; it cannot authenticate a specific broker, predict recovery, or replace licensed legal or financial advice.
