If a crypto remittance offer creates urgency, demands secrecy, or tells you to move money through an unfamiliar channel, stop. Treat it as a likely scam until you independently verify the sender and payment instructions. If you have already sent cryptocurrency, stop further payments, secure any compromised accounts or wallets, contact the exchange or crypto-ATM operator immediately, preserve every record, and report the incident. Blockchain transfers are usually difficult to reverse, but a provider may still be able to freeze an account or preserve funds if you act quickly.
What a crypto remittance scam looks like
A crypto remittance scam uses the promise of sending money, receiving money, fixing a transfer, or accessing a balance to make you transfer cryptocurrency to a scammer-controlled wallet. The approach may be presented as a family emergency, an inexpensive international remittance, an exchange security alert, a job or investment opportunity, or help recovering money that was already stolen.

The person contacting you may impersonate an exchange, bank, government office, employer, investment adviser, friend, romantic partner, or relative. The identity is less important than the behavior: the scammer tries to control your decisions before you can verify the story. The CFTC says that a request to move money through an unusual channel is a warning sign, particularly when the caller claims your funds or identity are in immediate danger.

Urgency, fear and secrecy
- You are told to act immediately or lose access, miss a deadline, face arrest, or let a relative suffer.
- The sender insists that you keep the transaction secret from family, your bank, an employer, or an adviser.
- You are coached line by line while buying cryptocurrency, scanning a QR code, or moving it to a wallet.
- The caller will not let you hang up and verify the claim through an independently found number.
Legitimate financial providers can have deadlines, but they do not normally require secrecy or prevent you from independently contacting them. End the conversation and verify through a known official website, a statement, or a telephone number you locate yourself.

Promises that cannot be true
- Guaranteed profits, “zero risk,” free money, or a fixed return for a short-term transfer.
- A promise that cryptocurrency will be released as soon as you pay a tax, validation charge, insurance premium, or other fee.
- A claim that a payment is reversible or protected like a credit-card purchase when it is being sent directly to a wallet.
The FTC’s plain warning is: “Only scammers demand payment in cryptocurrency.” A genuine tax authority, court, or employer will not require you to send crypto to an unknown wallet to prove your identity or unlock a payment.
Impersonated exchanges and “safe” wallets
A fake exchange message may say that your account has been compromised and instruct you to click a supplied link, reveal a password or one-time code, install remote-access software, or transfer assets to a “safe” wallet. The safe wallet belongs to the attacker. Do not use the link or telephone number in the message. Open the provider’s official website or app yourself, and use its published support channel.
No legitimate support agent needs your seed phrase or private key. Never disclose either one, even if the person knows your name, account balance, transaction history, or part of your identification number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUnusual payment channels
Be especially cautious when a new contact directs you to a crypto ATM, a QR code, an unfamiliar app or wallet, gift cards, a courier, or several split payments. These channels make it harder to identify the recipient and harder for a bank or exchange to intervene. A request to bypass your normal exchange, bank, or remittance provider is itself a reason to pause.
Trust-building followed by a transfer request
Some scams begin with a person met online who spends weeks building trust, discouraging you from consulting family, and then introducing a fake investment or remittance process. The relationship may be romantic, professional, or simply friendly. A familiar conversation does not make a wallet address safe. Verify the payment destination independently before sending anything.

Check an offer before sending any cryptocurrency
- Stop the conversation. Do not let the caller or chat contact rush you through a payment.
- Identify the exact recipient. Obtain the legal name, destination wallet address, asset, network, amount, and purpose in writing.
- Verify outside the conversation. Use a website or phone number you found independently, not a link, QR code, or number supplied by the sender.
- Ask someone you trust. A second person often notices urgency, secrecy, or an inconsistent story.
- Test the process with the provider. A regulated exchange or remittance service should explain fees, limits, identity checks, and what happens if a transfer fails. It should not demand your seed phrase or remote access.
- Assume a withdrawal “tax” is a trap. If a balance is visible but each withdrawal attempt produces a new fee, stop paying. The FBI’s Operation Level Up guidance warns that additional taxes and fees do not recover a scam loss.
If you already sent crypto: the recovery workflow
Speed matters because an exchange may be able to freeze an account or preserve records before funds are moved again. There is no universal recovery rate, and no official source promises that a blockchain transfer will be reversed. Follow these steps in order.
1. Stop the loss
- End the call or chat. Do not send another payment, even if the scammer promises that it will release the first one.
- Do not warn the scammer that you are reporting them; that can prompt rapid movement of the funds or deletion of messages.
- Ignore demands for a recovery tax, tracing deposit, legal retainer, verification payment, or “temporary” collateral.
2. Secure the account, email, and wallet
If an exchange account or email account may be compromised, reach the provider through its official site or app. Change the password to a unique one, sign out other sessions, revoke unfamiliar API keys, and enable multifactor authentication. Ask support to flag suspicious activity and freeze withdrawals if that control is available.

If a self-custody wallet’s seed phrase or private key was exposed, assume the wallet is permanently compromised. On a trusted device, create a new wallet with a new seed phrase and move any remaining assets to it. Never send the new seed phrase to support, a tracing firm, or anyone who contacts you. A transfer from a compromised wallet can itself be risky if an attacker is monitoring it, so obtain technical help from a trusted, independently verified professional when necessary.
3. Contact the payment intermediary immediately
Call the exchange, crypto-ATM operator, bank, or card provider using contact information obtained independently. Give the representative:
- the transaction hash or blockchain transaction ID;
- the destination wallet address and, if relevant, the network;
- the asset and amount;
- the date and time, including time zone;
- your account or ATM receipt details; and
- the messages, phone numbers, websites, and names used by the scammer.
Ask whether the provider can place a hold, freeze an account, recall an on-ramp payment, or preserve records for law enforcement. The FBI notes that exchanges may freeze assets through internal procedures or legal process, but that possibility is not a promise of reversal. A self-custody transfer that has already settled on a blockchain generally cannot be canceled by the sender.

4. Preserve evidence exactly as it exists
Create a timeline while details are fresh. Keep original emails with their headers, chat exports, screenshots, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, receipts, website addresses, social-media handles, caller IDs, telephone numbers, names used, and every payment request. Save files in their original form and make a backup. Do not edit, crop, or delete the originals; put any notes in a separate file.
Record how you acquired the cryptocurrency, which exchange or ATM you used, the asset and network, and every subsequent contact. If you paid from a bank account or card, retain statements and dispute communications. These details help an intermediary or investigator distinguish the payment rail and trace where funds moved.
5. Report promptly
Submit a complaint to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FBI specifically asks anyone who believes they or someone they know may be a cryptocurrency-scam victim to report immediately. Also file an FTC ReportFraud complaint, notify local police, and contact the financial or digital-asset regulator relevant to your jurisdiction. If the scam crossed borders, report it to the appropriate national authority in your country as well.
Include the complete timeline, transaction data, contact information, and copies of evidence. Identify any person who later offered recovery services; that information can connect the original scam to a second operation.
6. Prevent a second loss
After a theft, you may be contacted by someone claiming to be a blockchain investigator, lawyer, government agent, exchange employee, or law-enforcement contractor. The FBI describes fictitious law firms and tracing services that charge up-front fees or falsely claim government affiliation. A private recovery firm cannot issue a seizure order. Do not pay an unsolicited helper, provide identity documents or wallet credentials, or trust a guaranteed-recovery claim. Independently verify every claimed affiliation through the organization’s official contact channel.

How recovery differs by payment rail
The route your money took is more important than the story the scammer told. The following comparison describes practical possibilities, not guaranteed outcomes.
| Payment rail | What determines the possibility of intervention | What to do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-custody wallet | Whether the recipient can be identified and whether funds later reach an intermediary that can freeze them | Secure any remaining assets, preserve the transaction hash, and report the destination address | A confirmed blockchain transfer is generally difficult to reverse |
| Centralized exchange account | How quickly the exchange is notified, whether the destination account is on that platform, and whether its internal or legal freeze process applies | Contact the exchange’s official support immediately with the hash, address, amount, asset, and timestamp | The exchange may be unable to recover assets already withdrawn or sent elsewhere |
| Crypto ATM | Whether the operator can identify the transaction and whether funds remain under its control | Call the operator using its independently published number and keep the receipt, wallet address, and time | ATM operators do not guarantee reversal, and cash-to-crypto transfers can settle quickly |
| Bank or card on-ramp | Whether the bank or card payment is still pending and which consumer-protection rules apply | Notify the bank or card issuer immediately and provide the related exchange or ATM records | Cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as credit and debit card purchases; a separate fiat payment may have different dispute rules |
Compare your situation using five facts: the payment rail, time elapsed, whether the destination funds remain at a regulated intermediary, the quality of your transaction evidence, and the jurisdictions involved. Agencies do not publish a universal percentage of victims who recover funds.
Why fake taxes and blocked withdrawals work
In a common pattern, a website displays a profitable balance and allows deposits but blocks withdrawals. The operator then invents a tax, anti-money-laundering charge, network fee, insurance payment, or account-upgrade cost. Each payment appears to bring the withdrawal closer, but the demand changes or a new fee appears.
The displayed balance may be nothing more than a number in a database. Paying the requested charge does not validate ownership or unlock a blockchain transaction. Stop at the first invented fee and preserve the website and messages as evidence.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported more than $5.6 billion in cryptocurrency-fraud losses in 2023, a 45% increase from 2022, in a report released in 2024. An earlier FBI alert reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022. Those figures are reported losses, not a measure of every scam or a prediction of any individual case.
Best Value
The FBI also reported more than $9.9 million in additional losses from fictitious-law-firm recovery scams between February 2023 and February 2024. FinCEN reported nearly $13 billion linked to suspected digital-asset scams operated by overseas scam centers in 2026. The numbers explain why a second unsolicited “recovery” offer should be treated as a likely continuation of the fraud, not as evidence that your case has been found.
Examples of common remittance scenarios
“Your relative needs an emergency transfer”
A message appears to come from a family member who has lost a phone or is traveling. The sender asks for crypto because a bank transfer is supposedly unavailable and pressures you not to call anyone else. Contact the relative through a known number or another family member. Do not use the account that sent the request as your verification channel.
“Your exchange account is under attack”
An email or caller tells you to move assets to a safe wallet. Open the exchange app yourself and check notifications there. Support will not need your password, one-time code, seed phrase, or private key. If the account really is compromised, change credentials and revoke sessions through the official interface rather than following the caller’s instructions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Use this ATM or QR code for a fast international remittance”
The scammer may claim that a crypto ATM avoids bank delays or identity checks. A QR code sends funds to the address encoded in it; it does not prove who controls that address. Verify the recipient and the operator independently, and do not allow a stranger to coach you through the machine.
“Pay one more fee to withdraw”
A fake investment or remittance dashboard shows an account balance but demands repeated taxes or release charges. No additional payment can turn an invented dashboard balance into cash. Stop paying, save the site and transaction records, and report the operation.
Prevention checklist for future remittances
- Use a provider you located independently and confirm its legal identity, support channel, fees, and recipient process.
- Verify the recipient by a second channel before every first-time transfer and before any change to a saved wallet address.
- Keep your exchange password, email password, multifactor codes, seed phrase, and private keys private.
- Use multifactor authentication and review account sessions and API permissions regularly.
- Do not install remote-access software at a caller’s request or sign a wallet transaction you do not understand.
- Pause when a message combines urgency, secrecy, unusual payment instructions, or a promise of guaranteed profit.
- Discuss large or unfamiliar transfers with a trusted person before sending them.
What legitimate help can and cannot do
An exchange, ATM operator, bank, police agency, regulator, or court may be able to preserve records, freeze funds under its procedures, or investigate an address. None can promise that a settled blockchain transaction will be reversed. Private investigators and lawyers may assist with documentation or legal advice, but they cannot create a guaranteed recovery and cannot issue government seizure orders unless they are acting through an authorized legal process.
Be skeptical of anyone who contacts you first, guarantees a result, demands cryptocurrency up front, or says your case is already approved for recovery. A legitimate investigator will explain what is known, what is uncertain, what the fee covers, and which official authority can verify the engagement.
