Crypto Market Cap vs. Bitcoin Dominance: What Each Metric Tells You

Crypto market capitalization estimates an asset’s value at current prices using a specified supply figure. Bitcoin dominance shows Bitcoin’s percentage share of a provider’s total crypto market capitalization. One is an estimated valuation; the other is a relative share. Neither tells you how much cash entered the market or predicts what prices will do.

What is crypto market capitalization?

For an individual asset, the standard circulating-market-cap calculation is:

Market capitalization = current price × circulating supply

If a token trades at $2 and a provider estimates 10 million tokens are circulating, its circulating market capitalization is $20 million. That figure is a valuation at the quoted price, not a tally of money invested in the token. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap both use price multiplied by circulating supply for this calculation. CoinGecko’s methodology and CoinMarketCap’s FAQ explain their respective approaches.

Why the supply estimate matters

Circulating supply is not necessarily a directly observable, universally agreed count. CoinGecko says it obtains supply information from token teams and verifies it when possible; its methods can include block-explorer data for proof-of-work assets and deductions for locked tokens in smart-contract projects. CoinMarketCap describes circulating supply as an approximation of assets circulating in the market and in the general public’s hands. These are provider methodologies, not a universal audited standard.

As a result, two providers can report different market caps for the same asset if they use different prices or supply estimates. Their aggregate crypto totals can also differ because they track different asset universes or apply different inclusion requirements.

What is Bitcoin dominance?

Bitcoin dominance expresses Bitcoin’s market capitalization as a percentage of the total crypto market capitalization counted by a particular provider:

Bitcoin dominance = Bitcoin market capitalization ÷ total crypto market capitalization × 100

For example, if a provider reports Bitcoin at $1 trillion and its tracked crypto market at $2 trillion, the resulting dominance reading is 50%. The percentage is meaningful only alongside the provider and its definition of the market being counted. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap describe dominance as Bitcoin’s share of the crypto market; see CoinGecko’s Bitcoin dominance definition and chart and CoinMarketCap’s dominance definition.

How do the metrics differ?

Question Market capitalization Bitcoin dominance
What does it describe? An estimated valuation for one asset, or for an aggregate of tracked assets. Bitcoin’s share of a provider-defined aggregate crypto valuation.
How is it calculated? Current price multiplied by a specified supply quantity, usually circulating supply. Bitcoin market cap divided by total crypto market cap, multiplied by 100.
What can it help show? An asset’s relative size at prevailing prices, or how that estimated value changes. How Bitcoin’s share of the measured market changes over time.
What does it not establish? How much cash was invested, or the amount of money that flowed in or out. Why Bitcoin’s share changed, whether funds moved directly between assets, or what prices will do next.

Circulating, total, and maximum supply—and FDV

The supply figure used in a valuation can change the result substantially. Check the basis before comparing market-cap figures or interpreting fully diluted valuation (FDV).

  • Circulating supply: A provider’s estimate of the units considered to be in circulation or in public hands. Methods can differ and may account for project disclosures, locked balances, or other checks.
  • Total supply: Units already created, generally excluding units burned under the provider’s definition. It can include tokens that are not circulating.
  • Maximum supply: The maximum number of units that can exist, if the asset has a defined cap.
  • Fully diluted valuation (FDV): A price multiplied by a broader supply quantity. Publishers may use total supply or maximum supply, so check which denominator a particular FDV uses rather than treating the label as uniform.

CoinMarketCap’s supply definitions distinguish circulating, total, and maximum supply. CoinGecko also explains market-cap and FDV calculations in its market-cap explainer.

What a change in market cap does—and does not—mean

Market cap can change because the price changes, the supply estimate changes, or both. A price increase reprices every unit included in the calculation; it does not require buyers to have paid the new price for every circulating unit. CoinGecko puts the limitation plainly: “Market cap is not always an accurate measure of net cash inflow,” in its explainer updated April 10, 2026. Read the full explanation.

Market capitalization is therefore useful as a standardized estimate of relative size, but it should not be read as the amount of money invested or as proof that an equivalent amount of cash entered or left the market. CoinMarketCap also notes concerns in interpreting market capitalization, including the possibility that some bitcoin is dormant or lost; that is a caveat about what market value can represent, not a verified count of lost coins. Its aggregate market-cap methodology describes how its tracked assets contribute to the total.

How to interpret a rise or fall in Bitcoin dominance

A rising dominance reading means Bitcoin makes up a larger share of the provider’s measured crypto market; a falling reading means its share is smaller. The percentage alone does not reveal the cause. Dominance can rise if Bitcoin appreciates relative to other tracked assets, if those assets fall relative to Bitcoin, or if coverage or inputs in the provider’s market total change.

A falling reading is sometimes treated as a sign of altcoin outperformance or an approaching “altseason,” but dominance by itself does not prove that money moved directly from Bitcoin to altcoins or that an altcoin rally will follow. To assess relative performance, compare returns over the same period and check the provider, asset coverage, and market-cap basis used for the dominance series.

How to use the figures responsibly

  • Name the data provider when quoting a total market capitalization or Bitcoin dominance reading.
  • Check whether the asset valuation uses circulating supply, total supply, or maximum supply.
  • For a time-series comparison, use the same provider and supply basis throughout; changing definitions can distort the comparison.
  • When citing a live reading, include the provider and timestamp because prices and dominance change continuously.
  • Treat market cap as an estimated valuation and dominance as a relative-share indicator—not as measures of cash flows or forecasts.
